Located on Highway 30 in Kapalua. Look for public beach access between the Napili Kai and the Kapalua Bay Club. Cemetery The area just north of Wahikuli Park has good calm swimming area. Mostly sandy bottom. Good for beginners. Wahikuli Park Picnic tables, restrooms, showers, a good sandy beach, easy access for swimming, snorkeling and scuba diving. Mana Kai Hotel Located on South Kihei Road. Good snorkeling along the rocky coast in front of the hotel. Enter the water on the sandy beach to the left and snorkel along the rocks to the right. Ulua Beach / Mokapu Beach Located in the heart of Wailea Resort. Turn right on public beach access just past the Stouffer Wailea Hotel. Snorkel and scuba diving on the rocky point between both beaches. Deeper reef extends further out. Showers and restrooms. Molokini Crater One of Maui's four marine preserves. Hawaii's most exciting snorkeling and scuba diving destination. Accessible only by boat. Call any Maui Dive Shop for reservations. Wailea Beach Look for a public beach access parking lot between the Grand Wailea and the Four Seasons Hotel(s) in Wailea. Excellent sunbathing/swimming beach with good snorkeling and scuba diving to the left. Makena Landing/Five Caves (5 Graves) Just past the Makena Surf Condo, turn right on Makena Road. Proceed 4/10ths of a mile to a large brown sign saying Makena Landing.Parking, showers, and restrooms are available. There's good snorkeling to the left of the bay, excellent scuba diving to the right. About 2/10ths of a mile back along Makena Road is Five Caves/Graves. Underwater caves and ledges highlight this area. The outer reef is home to a large green sea turtle colony, sometimes caller "turtle town". WARNING: Do Not Enter The Caves. Makena Beach Drive through the Makena Resort community to the Maui Prince Hotel. You will see a large red hill (cinder cone) in the distance, called"Pu'u O Lai". Makena Beach extends from the base of this hill, south one mile. There are two paved parking lots on the right side of the road. This is one of Maui's most popular beaches. WARNING: Not Recommended For Snorkeling, Diving, Or Boogie Boarding Due To Large Surf and Strong Currents. Baldwin Beach Located on Highway 36 driving towards Paia. Park facilities, family beach, good swimming, beautiful white sand beach, often windy. Not recommended for beginners. Honolua Bay One of Maui's four marine preserves. 6/10 ths of a mile past mile marker 32 on Rout 30, north of Kapalua. Look for a narrow dirt road that leads to the bay where there is a old boat ramp. Good for snorkeling and scuba diving. Best in the summer. Kahekili Beach Park (Old Airport Beach) Driving north on Rout 30 towards Kapalua, enter at the northern-most entrance to Ka'anapali Resort. Look for public beach access and parking towards the right. Facilities include a pavilion, showers, restrooms, picnic tables. Good for beginners. Black Rock (Sheraton Hotel) In the midst of Ka'anapali Resort, there is excellent diving and snorkeling around the lava rock in front of the hotel. The fish and eels are tame from hand feeding (Beware, they can still bite!) so no spear fishing please. Olowalu South of Lahaina on Rout 30 look for mile marker 14. One of Maui's most popular snorkeling and scuba diving areas. Easy access with abundant coral and fish. McGregor Point (Lighthouse) On Highway 30 towards Lahaina from Ma'alaea, 7/10ths of a mile past mile marker 7. Turn left on the gravel road leading to the lighthouse. Recommended for advanced diving only. Kamaole Parks I, II, and III Kihei's best beaches for swimming and sunbathing. Found along South Kihei Road before entering Wailea. Excellent for beginners. The best diving is found along rocky points on either end of the beaches. Lifeguards are on duty. Good for boogie boarding. Available facilities include restrooms and showers. Ahihi Bay One of Maui's four marine reserves. Located about 1.5 miles past the Maui Prince Hotel. Look for a small bay right beside the road, next to a hexagon-shaped house. There is a second entry location a 1/2 mile further down the road, look to your right for a gravel parking area. No beach facilities. Excellent snorkeling and scuba diving. La Perouse One of Maui's four marine reserves. Located 2 miles past Ahihi Bay over a rugged lava flow. Paved road, no facilities. Excellent snorkeling and scuba diving for experienced divers. WARNING: Use Caution On Entries And Exits Due To Rugged Coastline. Hana Bay Snorkel between the pier and the lighthouse. Stay well inshore as the currents can be very powerful outside. Good coral and fish. Keanae Located halfway between Paia and Hana on the Hana Highway. Good local fishing spot, beautiful and picturesque. Not recommended for diving. Ho'okipa Beach Park Located on Highway 36, just past Paia. Famous as a world class windsurfing beach, picnic tables, showers, and restrooms. Not recommended for diving. Kubota WAILUKU Lanai Water Co. has decided against fluoridating the island's drinking water supply, despite encouragement otherwise from state health officials. Company President Vince Bagoyo said the residents do not support fluoridation. "It's always been our decision that the residents should make that decision, and for Lanai there's no fluoridation," said Bagoyo, also vice president of Castle & Cooke. Bagoyo said last August that the company supported the project based on a community meeting on Lanai, where citizens and health professionals listed fluoridation as a priority. But since then the proposal to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water has been under attack by some groups and individuals in Maui County. They say fluoridation has been associated with illnesses such as osteoporosis and cancer, and if people want to add fluoride to their diet, they should do it as individuals. The decision by Lanai Water Co. comes when the Maui County Council is considering a bill that would ban fluoridation in private water systems. Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson said she introduced the measure to give the people a choice in what they want in their water. Johnson said there is evidence that fluoride in the diet may increase the risk of medical complications for children, the elderly and those with cardiovascular, kidney and other chronic disorders. She said she is also worried about the health effect of excessive fluoridation in children. "I always err on the side of caution," she said. "I think people should have the right to choose what they want in their water. ... We should not be forcing it upon individuals." Several Maui residents testified in favor of the bill. But Dr. Mark Greer, chief of the state Dental Health Division, said fluoridation is taking place in virtually all major cities and that there was nothing to prove claims that it causes health problems. "We've heard all the claims against fluoridation," he said. "There is nothing to substantiate a downside in fluoridation." Greer, who had planned to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water by this spring, said the division still believes it is a good idea and wants to continue talks with the community. State health officials say statistics for school year 1999 showed Lanai had the highest rate of tooth decay in children ages 5 to 9 among the Hawaiian Islands and more than three times the rate of children on Hawaii military bases where there has been fluoridation since the 1950s. Greer said fluoridation would be good for Lanai. "This is what it's about: reducing disease and reducing the cost of health care," he said. Johnson's bill, along with a resolution asking the Maui Board of Water Supply to prohibit fluoridation, has been referred to the Council's Public Works and Transportation Committee. (Click here to read more) Moskowitz's "charity" bingo Over the years, the bingo club has netted tens of millions of dollars and Moskowitz has funneled the bulk of the money to extremist Israeli causes [see Blocking Mideast Peace ] By contrast, Moskowitz's use of bingo funds in Hawaiian Gardens has been strategically stingy. Moskowitz gave multi-million dollar donations from the bingo to organizations in Hawaiian Gardens - they just happened to go mainly to the hospital Moskowitz owns and the food bank he and his family control. Moskowitz's bingo operation has in the past supported the Hawaiian Gardens government. But that was from 1995 to 1997, while he campaigned for approval of his casino. In 1999 his total giving to the city was $35,000! The bingo operation takes advantage of a state law that requires that bingo parlors must be charities, staffed by volunteers. The Moskowitz Foundation staffs the bingo with immigrant "volunteers" who work set schedules only for tips – no wages or benefits. MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, is suing the Moskowitz bingo on behalf of 24 unpaid bingo workers. [see MALDEF Suit ] Irving Moskowitz used his bingo to hijack Hawaiian Gardens' political life and its development funds If he gets a long-pending casino license, he will continue to snatch this community’s future. In the mid-1990s, Irving Moskowitz used his "charity" bingo to gain political control of Hawaiian Garden, a predominantly Latino, low-income city. He then put the City millions of dollars in debt to build his casino. California's gambling authority is in the process of deciding whether to license Moskowitz's casino. We believe Moskowitz should not get the license, because it would mean the government endorses his abuse of Hawaiian Gardens. Based on the business practices Moskowitz’s has employed in running his bingo parlors, we are certain that if he gets a license, Moskowitz will not pay the casino taxes to Hawaiian Gardens, and instead will leave residents to pay off the casino’s debts! [see DDA ] Moskowitz's Hawaiian Gardens Casino In 1993, Moskowitz pushed through a sweetheart deal with the Hawaiian Gardens Community Redevelopment Agency to develop what, at the time, everyone thought would be a large retail complex. But by 1995, Moskowitz was backing a ballot measure on a casino—spending over $500,000, almost $200 a vote, much of it to street gang "campaign workers." Hawaiian Gardens took a financial beating from the development of the casino. The 1993 deal stuck left the city's Redevelopment Agency paying many costs commonly born by developers. The financial burden so drained the Agency that its auditors warned it might go belly up. The City Council bailed out the Agency with more than $3 million. Then, with the casino still unfinished, the city borrowed $3.5 million from Dr. Moskowitz to finance additional Agency spending on the casino. The city then floated bonds to pay the debts that Moskowitz forced it to incur – including a million-dollar bill from his lawyers. It also reports that city attorney Julia Sylva, a Moskowitz opponent, resigned after a new solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office. "HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, said Wednesday he wants to review Hawaiian Gardens' card-club development plan to determine whether state law restrictions on public-fund use is being ignored. The city's Redevelopment Agency has been involved with Irving Moskowitz for the past few years in an effort to build a multimillion dollar card club - and the city's tab has reached about the halfway mark of a potential $20 million bill, according to former City Attorney Julia Sylva." Meanwhile, as a new, solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office, Julia Sylva, the Hawaiian Gardens city attorney long at odds with Moskowitz' attorney and local potentate Beryl Weiner, resigned. Anyone know what color papaya is, or whether it resembles spam from a distance? Another of the local delicies is a seaweed called ogo or limu loa, depending on whether you’re from Japan on Hawaii respectively, or, failing that, on the nationality of the elderperson who answered your question, “what is that gunk you’re scraping off the beach every morning?” Our hosts had a half-dozen different recipes for ogo, also collected on the beach in the morning (delivered in a half-dozen different Polynesian accents), including various combinations of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, tomatoes, onion, etc. We tried two of them and I regret not staying longer, or getting up earlier in the day to harvest more.
