'Aiea Bay State Recreation Area Off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy.) at McGrew Loop near Aloha Stadium, 'Aiea. Along the banks of Pearl Harbor's East Loch, the park offers picnicking opportunities. Views of Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. The Pearl Harbor bike path passes through the park. Diamond Head State Monument Brochure Off Diamond Head Road Between Makapu'u Avenue and 18th Avenue, Honolulu. Hawai'i's most famous landmark--a large tuff cone which was formed by a short series of explosive eruptions some 100,000 years ago; National Natural Landmark. Park hours (see note). 18.5 acres 'Iolani Palace State Monument Corner of South King Street and Richards Street, downtown Honolulu. Royal Palace of the Hawaiian Monarchy. Officially dedicated in 1882, 'Iolani Palace served as the setting for the monarchs and their courts on formal occasions. Guided tours of the palace interior by advance reservations (fee charged)--call the Friends of 'Iolani Palace at (808) 522-0832; tour hours are 9 a.m. to 2:15 p.m., Wednesday through Saturday. Landscaped grounds popular for informal lawn picnics and Friday noon band concerts. National Historic Landmark. 11.0 acres Ka'ena Point State Park End of Farrington Highway (Highway 930), Makua. Relatively remote wild coastline with picnicking opportunities and shore fishing. Large sandy beach at Keawa'ula Bay with board surfing and bodysurfing for experts and swimming only during completely calm conditions in the summer; lifeguard services. Long family hike (2.7 miles one-way) along volcanic coast with tide pools, small natural stone arches and fine views of Makua coastline. Early morning porpoise sightings from point near Kaluakauila stream mouth. Viewing of the large sea cave, Kaneana, legendary home of Nanue the shark man. Hot, dry area with little shade. No drinking water. 778.6 acres Kahana Valley State Park 52-222 Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), Kahana. Scenic wildland valley. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities, picnicking, camping and viewing of Huilua Fishpond at beach area. Hardy family hike (4.9 miles) and fruit picking in lushly vegetated forest; picnicking in coconut grove; pig hunting in public hunting area. Park open during daylight hours. 5,228.7 acres Kaka'ako Waterfront Park End of Ahui or Ohe Streets off Ala Moana Boulevard, Honolulu. Waterfront park with shore fishing and ocean access for body surfing. Built over a former municipal landfill, the park offers a waterfront promenade, picnic areas, an amphitheater, and observation areas with fine views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. 35.0 acres Kea'iwa Heiau State Recreation Area End of 'Aiea Heights Drive, 'Aiea Heights, 'Aiea. Forest recreation: picnicking, camping and hardy family hiking (4.8-mile loop trail); rustic facilities. Remains of heiau ho'ola (temple of healing) and specimens of medicinal plants on display. Park hours (see note). 384.5 acres Kewalo Basin Off Ala Moana Blvd. at Ward Avenue. Adjacent to Ala Moana Beach Park. Oceanside park near downtown Honolulu with a pedestrian promenade, trellised picnic areas, and outdoor showers. Kukaniloko Birthstones State Monument Brochure At the intersection of Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 99) and Whitmore Avenue on the north side of Wahiawa. In early Hawai'i, this is where royalty came for the birth of their child to assure high-ranking status. The site consists of numerous stones within a grove of eucalyptus and coconut trees surrounded by pineapple fields. 5.0 acres La'ie Point State Wayside Off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 83) at La'ie town via Anemoku Street to end of Naupaka Street. Scenic views of offshore sea arch and seabird sanctuary island. Good shore fishing from sea cliffs at the point. Makapu'u Point State Wayside Off Kalaniana'ole Highway (Hwy. 72) from either Waimanalo or Hawai'i Kai. A 1-mile hike (one-way) along the former roadway to the lighthouse. At various points there are sweeping views of the southeastern O'ahu coastline - whales may be visible. Uphill climb to 500-foot elevation under hot, dry, and windy conditions. No drinking water or restrooms available. 38.2 acres Malaekahana State Recreation Area Off Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), Malaekahana Beach: Kalanai Point Section 0.6 mile north of La'ie town; Kahuku Section 1.3 miles north of La'ie town. Wooded beach park with swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities and shore fishing. Picnicking and camping a Kalanai Point Section. Picnicking, lodging and fee camping at Kahuku section--call 293-1736 for lodging and camping reservations. Park hours (see note). 110.0 acres Nu'uanu Pali State Wayside Nu'uanu Pali summit from marked access road off Pali Highway (Highway 61). Impressive view of windward O'ahu from brink of pali (cliffs) at 1200 feet elevation, Ko'olau Range. Winds are usually so strong that one can lean against the wall of wind. 3.0 acres Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Monument Brochure Off Pupukea Homestead Road (Highway 835) from Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83) across from Pupukea fire station. Viewing of O'ahu's largest heiau (place of worship), a low-walled court platform-type temple with two adjoining smaller independent structures. Reputed sacrifice site of Captain George Vancouver's watering party in 1793. National Historic Landmark. 5.7 acres Pu'u 'Ualaka'a State Wayside Off Round Top Drive off Makiki Street, Honolulu Forested area on a cinder cone close to downtown Honolulu. Information service; guided tours by advance reservations. Hours are 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., Monday thru Friday and on Memorial Day. Picnicking not allowed. 10.0 acres Sacred Falls State Park On Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), 1 mile south of Hau'ula town. Hawaiian Astronomical Society - Deepsky Atlas Hawaiian Astronomical Society Constellations: Stories and a Deepsky Atlas HAS Home Search All Sky Maps Constellations Listing Deepsky Listings Jay Wrathall's Messiers The Hawaiian Astronomical Society Storybook and Deepsky Atlas is a long term effort to provide a good online atlas of the heavens, combined with photographs of significant objects, and their descriptions. A second goal involves mapping the sky, using the following plan: Each constellation will receive a wide area map. There follows more detailed maps of the constellation, beginning in its northeast quadrant, and moving counter-clockwise around the constellation. Obviously, we had to make allowances for some peculiar shapes. We thank Software Bisque's The Sky for Windows for making this possible. A third goal involves telling the story(ies) behind the constellation. Many good stories from both Greco-Roman, and other civilizations enrich our culture. We thank Kayoko Calef for much of the research in this area. Many constellations, particularly the southern ones, have no myth associated with them. For their "myth" section, I have added biographies of the scientists associated with them. We know of no other site that has attempted combining detailed maps, deepsky objects, and myth into individual constellation pages. That said, certain elements have been tried, and they need mentioning. SEDS has become a huge repository of astronomical images. Their cross-referenced Messier catalog (maintained by Hartmut Frommert ) has become the Internet standard. SEDS combines scientific data, images, and crude maps. These pages use this fine work. Thus, you will find many links to SEDS here. See also SEDS' mirror site . The Peoria Astronomical Society provides another Messier survey of the sky , as part of their Astronomical Handbook . For other deepsky image catalogs, click here . Finally, there is the Digital Sky Survey, a huge project entering its second generation. This is a monochrome CCD record of the entire sky. Generation one is a more superficial scan of the sky. Generation two achieves the depth of a longer focus 10-12" telescope. A half degree field takes up to two megabytes. You can access the survey easily through the HAS Web site, thanks to the work of Gary Ward. This is an ambitious project that will take time to realize. I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them.
