If you are already a registered Content Tycoon user: Hawaii (The big Island) - A City Guide Author: Nivedita Balamurugan Introduction There's no place on earth quite like this handful of sun-drenched, mid-Pacific islands. The Hawaii of South Seas literature and Hollywood films really does exist. Here one will find palm-fringed blue lagoons, lush rainforests, hidden gardens, cascading waterfalls, wild rivers running through rugged canyons, and soaring volcanoes. And those beaches -- gold, red, black, and even green sands caressed by endless surf - a perfect place for spending holidays. History After a series of battles that ended in 1795 and peaceful cession of the island of Kauai in 1810, the Hawaiian Islands were united for the first time under a single ruler who would become known as King Kamehameha the Great. He established the House of Kamehameha, a dynasty that ruled over the kingdom until 1872. One of the most important events during those years was the suppression of the Hawaii Catholic Church. The Newlands Resolution was passed on July 7, 1898, formally annexing Hawaii as a United States territory. In 1900, it was granted self-governance and retained Iolani Palace as the territorial capitol building. In March 1959, both houses of Congress passed the Admission Act and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. On June 27 of that year, a plebiscite was held asking residents of Hawaii to vote on accepting the statehood bill. After statehood, Hawaii quickly became a modern state with a construction boom and rapidly growing economy. Kaululaau was a mischievous young man, always getting in trouble, and when he accidentally destroyed an entire crop of breadfruit, his fathers punishment was to banish him to Lanai. At the time, Lanai was an unexplored island, and evil spirits were believed to reside there. But the energetic Kaululaau cleared the land and found the island to be free of such spirits. In time, people began to settle the island. Perhaps a few evil spirits did lurk around Lanai, however, because frustrated residents trying to establish an economy on the island seemed to fall under a curse. Sugarcane and cattle were just two ambitious enterprises that came and went without success. Everything changed in 1922, when James Dole arrived on Lanai and purchased the entire island. The price tag? A cool $1.1 million. Dole had the magic touch. He wanted to grow pineapple on the island, and his efforts were remarkably successful. Soon, canned pineapple from Lanai, a product that no one had even heard of beforebecame a huge hit on the mainland United States. As large plantations were built, the island became a major exporter of this sweet, fleshy fruit; in fact, at one time, tiny Lanaproduced 75 percent of the worlds pineapple! To accommodate the increasing number of workers arriving on Lanai to toil in the pineapple fields, Dole built a plantation camp in the flatlands. This is now Lanai City. For the next few decades, Lanai was widely known as Hawaiis vibrant "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were covered with pineapple. In the late 1980s, pineapples "crown" began to wither, and the industry no longer turned a profit. Now owned by Castle & Cooke Resorts, Lanai has reinvented itself as a one-of-a-kind vacation destination, with two upscale resorts and golf courses. Only about 100 acres of pineapple for local consumption remain on the island. Each summer, Lanai celebrates its unique heritage with the Pineapple Festival, a colorful event paying homage to the islands favorite fruit. The seaside town of Lahaina , however, may be the islands notable exception. From rowdy sailors during the whaling era to modern-day stage productions, Lahaina has always been a bustling center of activity. In Lahaina, the fun heats up when the sun goes down. Front Street, the towns main thoroughfare, is a great place to catch the sunset, grab a bite to eat, enjoy an ice-cold brew or simply "kick back" and watch the colorful parade of people passing by. Front Street is also a window shoppers paradise, with more than a hundred shops and galleries to explore. Whats more, every Friday is "Art Night" in Lahaina, where visitors can take in special gallery shows, artist demonstrations, refreshments and entertainment. Lahaina has been dubbed "The Art Capital of the Pacific" because it has more art galleries per capita than any other town in America. A free map of participating galleries is available at the Lahaina Visitor Center. Best of all, everythings free! One of the hottest shows in all of Maui is Ulalena , a 75-minute musical extravaganza performed five nights a week at the 684-seat Maui Theatre. Since its debut in the summer of 1999, Ulalena has garnered numerous awards, including "Best Show of the Year" at the statewide Hawaii Music Awards. National Geographic Traveler describes the show as "a Cirque du Soleil-like" presentation of Hawaiian mythology and magic that weaves lighting, dance, costume and music into an entertaining theatrical experience." Be sure to check out Mauis special events calendar to preview the latest Lahaina happenings. Some of the towns more lively annual events include the Chinese New Year Celebration (January or February), Old-Fashioned Fourth of July fireworks show, A Taste of Lahaina (September), Aloha Festivals Hoolaulea (October) and Holiday Lighting of the Banyan Tree (December). And of course, Lahaina doesnt get any wilder than on October 31st, when more than 30,000 revelers descend on Front Street to take part in "Halloween in Lahaina." This Mardi Gras-style event features a childrens costume parade, food booths, games, crafts, live music and dancing. Its the biggest (and wildest) party on Maui. ©2003-2004 Media-HI, Inc.
