Dr. Beach, coastal expert Stephen Leatherman, chose Po'ipu Beach on Kaua'i two years ago, and like Po'ipu, Maui's Ka'anapali is a resort beach. Leatherman doesn't mind some hotels, as long as the beach itself isn't too crowded by them. Folks at the Ka'anapali hotels said they're pleased, but not surprised at the designation. "The connectivity down from Black Rock all the way to Canoe Beach, softsand, a wide beach, both tranquil water for snorkeling and surf for surfing andboogie boarding — we think that it's one of the great beaches," saidBarry Lewin, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, whichanchors the southern end of the beach. When Dr. Beach, a meteorologist and professor at Florida International University in Miami, selects a shoreline as his favorite for the year, it's taken out of the running permanently, but Hawai'i does not appear to be running short. Three other Hawaiian beaches made it into Leatherman's top 10 this year: Hanalei on Kaua'i, Makalawena on Hawai'i and Hanauma on O'ahu. It is the primary hub for domestic overseas and interisland flights and is currently one of three State airports accommodating international flights. Honolulu International also functions as a joint military-civilian airport sharing airfield facilities with Hickam Air Force Base. The Airport occupies 2,216 acres of land and 2,210 acres of water about three miles west of Downtown Honolulu, and seven miles from Waikiki. The airfield consists of two parallel east-west runways, two parallel crosswind runways, associated taxiways and navigational aids. Facilities include a complex of general aviation, air cargo, and airport support facilities at the south Ramp near Ke'ehi Lagoon and the passenger terminal complex at the North Ramp. A complex of maintenance and air cargo facilities, principally for the interisland airlines, is located west of the terminal complex. In ancient times, Oahu was called the 'gathering place'. Voyaging canoes from all other islands would meet on Oahu's shores. Today Oahu is again the 'gathering place' that includes visitors from around the world. The voyaging concept, therefore, is particularly appropriate as a metaphor for travel in the Honolulu International Airport, the major airport of entry and departure for the Hawaiian Islands. It provides a link between the travel of the early Hawaiians and the visitor today. I had the kahlua and lau lau combo--any restaurant that allows you to double up on pork is all right in my book. It was served with rice AND macaroni salad--two carbs instead of just one! Along with the usual ketchup, mustard, and relish, there was a very good Vietnamese hot sauce on the condiment stand. Lest you think I'm totally unhealth conscious, the taro leafs and cabbage that came with the kahlua and lau lau were tender and flavorful. The staff was friendly, helpful, and genuinely concerned about my dining experience.
