The Maui Windsurfing DAILY Report MWR Daily Report May 17th, 1996 Looks like there's a good puff out there. I'm writing this ahead of time cause I'm gonna get so tired I won't be able to type. tim ATTENTION: Will the blonde woman sailing uppers on Ezzy wave gear this afternoon please e-mail kent@maui.net :-) Wow! What can I say? It just doesn't get any better than this. For my sizeanything from 4.2 to 4.7 was perfect. The northeast trade winds were sosteady that sail choice was a matter of personal preference. I took my4.7 thinking that if the wind backed off a bit I would still be fullypowered. The wind never eased, in fact, there wasn't a single hole to befound anywhere! After all the slalom sailing from days past, it was good to finally getback on a wave board. I could tell it was going to be a good session fromthe moment I hooked in and started heading upwind from the launch atkook's beach (Kanaha). Making my way out towards upper reef, everythingseemed so well balanced and in control. I could take my hands off theboom and just hang back and cruise. I was hitting jumps on the way out,just to get warmed up, and not loose any speed. Yes, this was going tobe a good session! Imagine how stoked I was to see Robby Naish and DonMontague sailing by. This is how I dreamed it would always be. At Uppers, I found myseff in waves that were shoulder high, nothingterribly radical, but perfectly matched for my ability level. Occaisionally a logo-high set would roll in and challenge my nerves. Igladly took the challenge this time and went for it. I managed a few nicebottom turns and off-the-lips. Yes, this was wavesailing at it's finest. The sun is out. It's warm, the water saphire blue and so refreshing. Breathing the fresh air, naturally cleansed from travelling thousands ofmiles over open ocean, was envigorating. It was spectacular looking upand seeing Halealkela rising to over 10,000 feet in the foreground and tothe opposite, the rugged and mist-covered West Maui mountains and Iaovalley. Rainbows, palm trees, green pineapple and cane fields. It's alltoo much to take in at one time. Someone pinch me. I've been hereexactly one year, but I'm still amazed at this place, and it still seemsall too good to be true. After sailing for about an hour, Kent shows up and we greet each otherwith smiles and shouts. Eeee-hah! We slashed around some more until Igot too tired to continue. I figured it was time to quit while I'm stillahead and save this scene for another day. Gary Back to May, 96

Kona Coast The Kona coast, on the west side of the Big Island, is home to the top resorts on the big islands and the popular Kona vacation rentals. The Kona area enjoys great weather all year round, in addition to other activities like deep-sea fishing and snorkeling, making this a popular place for Hawaii vacations. You can also take a tour of the coffee farms that produce the world famous Kona coffee, which is organic and all natural. Maui Road to Hana This is the most incredible drive of all the Hawaiian Islands. This 52 mile Hana drive usually takes about 3 hours, and goes over 54 different bridges. The drive starts at Kahului Airport, and the beginning of the ride takes your through farmlands that grow Pineapple and Taro. Then you will find yourself in a tropical rainforest, surrounded by papaya, guava, and rainbows eucalyptus trees. Next, you will drive by old churches in Wailua and Keanae. The Oceanside caves and black sand beaches of Wainapanapa State Park are some of the last natural wonders you will find before reaching the town of Hana, where you can experience life in a sleepy Hawaii town. Be sure to visit the Seven Sacred Pools at Oheo Gulch in the Haleakala National Park, and don't miss the 2 hour rainforest hike from Hana to the impressive waterfalls. Iao Valley Iao Valley beauty has inspired Hawaiians to gather here to honor the agriculture god, Lono, during an annual festival called the Makahiki festival. For over a hundred years visitors have been coming to the valley to enjoy the scenic beauty of this lush valley. There are trails in the park, so you can see the best scenery of the cloud covered valley. These clouds have a lot to do with the shape of the valley, since these feed the streams that carved the shape of the Iao valley. Oahu Hanauma Bay On Oahu, Hanauma Bay has a marine reef that is the top place for snorkeling anywhere on the island. There are more than 50 species of fish that make their home here, and you can see them up close when you scuba dive or snorkel at Hanauma Bay. Often, the bay is full of snorkelers, sometimes too many for additional divers to join. Shark's cove is a great alternative. There are underwater alcoves in the deeper inlet to the right of the cove where more adventurous divers can explore the natural beauty of the reef. Waikiki Beach Waikiki beach is located on the southern shores of Oahu. Since this place was frequented by the Hawaiian royalty during the 1800's, Waikiki has been a retreat for visitors looking for a relaxing shore. Waikiki beach is now home to the most resort hotels on the island, and home to the most modern luxury resorts in Hawaii as well as historic Hawaii hotels as well. Kauai Na Pali Coast The name is this spectacular place is taken from the Hawaiian word Pali, which means cliffs. The cliffs of the Na Pali coast are dramatic valleys that rise hundreds of feet from the ocean floor. These deep gorges are caused by streams and waterfalls which continue to create crevasses into the ancient stone, which are further eroded by the waves of the sea .There are still remnants of terraces near the valley floor where Hawaiians used to cultivate the taro root. There is a challenging 11-mile hike on the Kalalau trail, which traverses 5 valleys before it ends at Kalalau beach. This hike can take a full day but will reward you with treks through verdant meadows and ocean side beaches. Waimea Canyon The Waimean Canyon is an incredible feast for the eyes. Situated on the west coast of Hawaii, the canyon is more than 3,500 feet deep, and more than 10 miles long. This canyon was created by the flooding from the rivers that flowed out of the Hawaii volcano Mount Waialeale. If you look at the canyon walls, you will see the lines that show traces of the geological activity that has taken place over the past thousands of years. There is lots of great hiking, with many different lookouts and vista points to take in the stunning beauty of this Canyon. If you're driving out here, make sure you have plenty of gas in your tank, as there are is not a single gas station on the 40 mile road. Lanai Lanai City Lanai is the smallest island of all the islands of Hawaii, and is known as the Pineapple Isle because over 90% of the island was used to cultivate pineapples. This is a great place to get away from it all, since there are only two major resorts on this island. You can get here easily from Maui on the Expeditions Lanai ferry. Monro Trail and the Luahiwa Petroglyphs Lanai is worth a visit while you're in the Hawaiian Islands. It has a lot of interesting features, like Koele, which is home to a lodge that is in such a lovely setting that it pulls that the heartstrings of the most hardened Hawaiian. There is a four-wheel path and hiking trail that is popular for being a strenuous trek. Look down and thewater is the deepest of blues. Look to your left and you see people taking lessons. Lookfar to your right and you see pros throwing loops off nothing. Everyone who has had thegood luck to sail at Maui long enough (including myself) has a great story to tell, infact, many great stories . . . breaking or losing half of their sailing equipment on theinfamous and dreaded Hookipa "rocks" and the feeling of absolute terror in theimpact zone with not a breath of wind in your sail.On a given day, Maui has a greatervariety of sailing conditions for all levels of boardsailors than anywhere in the world.Maui's motto says it all :"MAUI NO KA OI". Translated it's :Maui is thebest.This is truly a place designed for Windsurfing. Hookipa Sailing Conditions: For those looking for high winds: visit Maui in thesummer. From May to August, the northeast trade winds average 15 to 25 miles/hr, with manydays in the 20 to 30 mile/hr range. The summer is also when the wave swell is at itssmallest. For those who are looking for Maui's famous surf: visit it when there are bothtrades and waves - spring (March to May) and fall (September to November). From Decemberto February, the northeasterlies are less consistent, but there are still great sailingdays during this time - big wave days especially! During the winter, Kona storms willbring in 10-to 20-knot southwesterlies to the south shore. The sailing is side-onshore,port tack, with conditions similar to lake sailing. Another typical winter occurrence is5-to 15-knot northerlies. These winds funnel between the West Maui Mountains and theHaleakala Crater creating great side-offshore, slalom sailing on the south shore. Sailing Spots: KANAHA BEACH PARK - Kanaha is abeautiful beach park with long, sandy beaches, grassy area for rigging, fresh watershowers, shading trees, and picnic tables, all located in Kahului on the northshore.Sideshore northeast tradewinds blow consistently during June - August, with typically flatwater sailing on the inside, and good bump and jump conditions on the outside. BetweenOctober and May you can find waves on the outside reefs, ranging from small wind swell toexpert wave riding conditions. Most windsurf schools operate at Kanaha because of theconsistent wind and warm water. All year round it is a perfect place for any level sailor. SPRECKELSVILLE / CAMP ONE - Up the coast fromKanaha there is a residential area called Spreckelsville which has many beautiful sandybeaches. The main area to sail is affectionately known as "Sprecks", whichprovides pristine blue-green water and white sandy beach. Parking is limited, so arriveearly. There are no facilities or showers. The sailing level is typically intermediate toadvanced, with the reef making for more chop and breaking waves. Camp One is a no frillsbeach at the end of the Kahului Airport runway. The place has no showers, no grass riggingareas, no toilet, and barely a trash can. It does have a beautiful beach and the onlybreaking waves for most of the summer. The place is frequented by German's, Australians,Italians, French and mean local windsurfers. It's a place where you want to be polite andfollow the local traditions and laws to the letter. Rude and unlawfull windsurfers havebeen known to get worked (on the shore too). HOOKIPA - Hookipa is the windsurfingmecca of the world. Host to World Cup sailing and surfing contests, Hookipa rips. Jaggedlava rock, exposed reefs, a gnarly shorebreak, light inside winds and powerful ripcurrents make this north shore difficult to launch off limits for most sailors. Expertslaunch from the Beach Park, just downwind from the pavillion. Expect crowds, with manysailors lulling around the outside and looking for a good wave to rip on the inside. Whenthe water flattens in the summer months, slalom sailors launch here at Hookipa and blastdownwind along the north shore. KIHEI - Kihei is the south shore's mostpopular windsurfing spot. When the tradewinds blow north/northeast the pavillion locatedat the intersection of Ohukai Street and South Kihei Road is a great place to sail. Thereef can be shallow on the inside, especially near the Maui Sunset, so consult the localsbefore venturing out. Kihei is good for all level sailors and has a variety ofaccommodations nearby!
