Kubota WAILUKU Lanai Water Co. has decided against fluoridating the island's drinking water supply, despite encouragement otherwise from state health officials. Company President Vince Bagoyo said the residents do not support fluoridation. "It's always been our decision that the residents should make that decision, and for Lanai there's no fluoridation," said Bagoyo, also vice president of Castle & Cooke. Bagoyo said last August that the company supported the project based on a community meeting on Lanai, where citizens and health professionals listed fluoridation as a priority. But since then the proposal to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water has been under attack by some groups and individuals in Maui County. They say fluoridation has been associated with illnesses such as osteoporosis and cancer, and if people want to add fluoride to their diet, they should do it as individuals. The decision by Lanai Water Co. comes when the Maui County Council is considering a bill that would ban fluoridation in private water systems. Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson said she introduced the measure to give the people a choice in what they want in their water. Johnson said there is evidence that fluoride in the diet may increase the risk of medical complications for children, the elderly and those with cardiovascular, kidney and other chronic disorders. She said she is also worried about the health effect of excessive fluoridation in children. "I always err on the side of caution," she said. "I think people should have the right to choose what they want in their water. ... We should not be forcing it upon individuals." Several Maui residents testified in favor of the bill. But Dr. Mark Greer, chief of the state Dental Health Division, said fluoridation is taking place in virtually all major cities and that there was nothing to prove claims that it causes health problems. "We've heard all the claims against fluoridation," he said. "There is nothing to substantiate a downside in fluoridation." Greer, who had planned to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water by this spring, said the division still believes it is a good idea and wants to continue talks with the community. State health officials say statistics for school year 1999 showed Lanai had the highest rate of tooth decay in children ages 5 to 9 among the Hawaiian Islands and more than three times the rate of children on Hawaii military bases where there has been fluoridation since the 1950s. Greer said fluoridation would be good for Lanai. "This is what it's about: reducing disease and reducing the cost of health care," he said. Johnson's bill, along with a resolution asking the Maui Board of Water Supply to prohibit fluoridation, has been referred to the Council's Public Works and Transportation Committee. The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why. These delicate shells come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and even a rare blue. Whole families are involved in collecting the shells and carefully sorting them by size and color. The intricate craftsmanship that goes into a Niihau Shell Lei makes each one a prized possession. Views of Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. The Pearl Harbor bike path passes through the park. Hawai'i's most famous landmark--a large tuff cone which was formed by a short series of explosive eruptions some 100,000 years ago; National Natural Landmark. No drinking water. 778.6 acres Kahana Valley State Park 52-222 Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), Kahana. Scenic wildland valley. Swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities, picnicking, camping and viewing of Huilua Fishpond at beach area. Hardy family hike (4.9 miles) and fruit picking in lushly vegetated forest; picnicking in coconut grove; pig hunting in public hunting area. Park open during daylight hours. 5,228.7 acres Kaka'ako Waterfront Park End of Ahui or Ohe Streets off Ala Moana Boulevard, Honolulu. Waterfront park with shore fishing and ocean access for body surfing. Built over a former municipal landfill, the park offers a waterfront promenade, picnic areas, an amphitheater, and observation areas with fine views of Waikiki and Diamond Head. 35.0 acres Kea'iwa Heiau State Recreation Area End of 'Aiea Heights Drive, 'Aiea Heights, 'Aiea. Forest recreation: picnicking, camping and hardy family hiking (4.8-mile loop trail); rustic facilities. Remains of heiau ho'ola (temple of healing) and specimens of medicinal plants on display. Kukaniloko Birthstones State Monument Brochure At the intersection of Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 99) and Whitmore Avenue on the north side of Wahiawa. In early Hawai'i, this is where royalty came for the birth of their child to assure high-ranking status. The site consists of numerous stones within a grove of eucalyptus and coconut trees surrounded by pineapple fields. 5.0 acres La'ie Point State Wayside Off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 83) at La'ie town via Anemoku Street to end of Naupaka Street. No drinking water or restrooms available. 38.2 acres Malaekahana State Recreation Area Off Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), Malaekahana Beach: Kalanai Point Section 0.6 mile north of La'ie town; Kahuku Section 1.3 miles north of La'ie town.
