The sheltered coast and delightful beaches made Lahaina an ideal playground for the king and his royal family. Today, Lahaina could easily be called the fun capital of Hawaii. Known all over the world for its colorful waterfront atmosphere, Lahaina attracts over a million visitors each year. Informality and fun are written all over this town, a spirit that harks back to the 1840's when up to four hundred whaling ships would anchor off Lahaina 'Roadstead,' discharging their crews of rowdy sailors. Afer months at sea these 'salty dogs' went straight to the taverns for grog and bawdy merriment. Troublesome drunks were thrown in the 'Hale Pahao' prison which still stands on Prison Street. Strolling through Lahaina is a must for every visitor. The original historic flavor has been maintained through the efforts of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, while being kept contemporary by the Lahainatown Action Committee. Hundreds of curio shops, sophisticated jewelers, art galleries and boutiques contain a myriad of wares ideal for gifts or personal mementos of your visit to Paradise. The historical town center is noted for its 110-year-old Banyan Tree, one of the world's largest, which grows over a whole block just in front of The Wharf Cinema Center. The Center, which boasts more than 50 shops and restaurants, surrounds a comfortable courtyard decorated with waterfalls and convenient, umbrella-shaded tables. Opposite is the Pioneer Inn, built in 1906, which looks out on the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor crammed with cruise boats and private yachts. Looking back from the Carthaginian, the authentic replica of a whaling brig, one can see the Seawall and shops lining Front Street. Beyond the Banyan Tree and past the tennis courts is 505 Front Street, a nautical 'village' of oceanfront shops and restaurants next to the Lahaina Shores Hotel. A walk toward the north end of town leads past the Wharf, the Seawall and Lahaina Market Place, a collection of shops and restaurants set in an open-court atmosphere. After Lahaina Shopping Center, with a large parking area and a good place to find photo supplies, suntan lotions and comfortable shoes, and across the street from Longhi's, you'll find the Lahaina Center, home of Hilo Hattie and the world-renowned Hard Rock Caf. A few blocks to the north, you can enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of the Lahaina Cannery. Lahaina, by day or night, is a warmhearted, romantic town which, for centuries, has been a popular haven for vacationers.

But Moskowitzs track record of less-than-charitable activity in Hawaiian Gardens belies his self-image of an altruistic benefactor a careful examination of his financial records and those of his non-profit foundation show that the majority of his contributions resulted in either financial gain or increased political influence for himself. Moskowitz Foundation and other ostensibly non-profit organizations to his own benefit in Hawaiian Gardens. We have carefully sifted through foundation IRS forms, court and property records, lease agreements, the California state business registry as well as conducting numerous interviews with community leaders in our effort to follow a money trail proving Moskowitz has engaged in non-profit profiteering in Hawaiian Gardens. (Click here to read more) Moskowitz's "charity" bingo Over the years, the bingo club has netted tens of millions of dollars and Moskowitz has funneled the bulk of the money to extremist Israeli causes [see Blocking Mideast Peace ] By contrast, Moskowitz's use of bingo funds in Hawaiian Gardens has been strategically stingy. Moskowitz gave multi-million dollar donations from the bingo to organizations in Hawaiian Gardens - they just happened to go mainly to the hospital Moskowitz owns and the food bank he and his family control. Moskowitz's bingo operation has in the past supported the Hawaiian Gardens government. But that was from 1995 to 1997, while he campaigned for approval of his casino. In 1999 his total giving to the city was $35,000! The bingo operation takes advantage of a state law that requires that bingo parlors must be charities, staffed by volunteers. The Moskowitz Foundation staffs the bingo with immigrant "volunteers" who work set schedules only for tips – no wages or benefits. MALDEF, the Mexican American Legal Defense and Education Fund, is suing the Moskowitz bingo on behalf of 24 unpaid bingo workers. [see MALDEF Suit ] Irving Moskowitz used his bingo to hijack Hawaiian Gardens' political life and its development funds If he gets a long-pending casino license, he will continue to snatch this community’s future. In the mid-1990s, Irving Moskowitz used his "charity" bingo to gain political control of Hawaiian Garden, a predominantly Latino, low-income city. He then put the City millions of dollars in debt to build his casino. California's gambling authority is in the process of deciding whether to license Moskowitz's casino. We believe Moskowitz should not get the license, because it would mean the government endorses his abuse of Hawaiian Gardens. Based on the business practices Moskowitz’s has employed in running his bingo parlors, we are certain that if he gets a license, Moskowitz will not pay the casino taxes to Hawaiian Gardens, and instead will leave residents to pay off the casino’s debts! [see DDA ] Moskowitz's Hawaiian Gardens Casino In 1993, Moskowitz pushed through a sweetheart deal with the Hawaiian Gardens Community Redevelopment Agency to develop what, at the time, everyone thought would be a large retail complex. But by 1995, Moskowitz was backing a ballot measure on a casino—spending over $500,000, almost $200 a vote, much of it to street gang "campaign workers." Hawaiian Gardens took a financial beating from the development of the casino. The 1993 deal stuck left the city's Redevelopment Agency paying many costs commonly born by developers. The financial burden so drained the Agency that its auditors warned it might go belly up. The City Council bailed out the Agency with more than $3 million. Then, with the casino still unfinished, the city borrowed $3.5 million from Dr. Moskowitz to finance additional Agency spending on the casino. The city then floated bonds to pay the debts that Moskowitz forced it to incur – including a million-dollar bill from his lawyers. The bonds are secured by the very casino revenue taxes which once promised prosperity – and which [see DDA ] we believe Moskowitz will probably stop paying if the state gives him a gambling license. Hawaiian Gardens Card Club Faces Legal Wrangle by Joe Segura 24 March 1999 Long Beach Press-Telegram This story reports that Hawaiian Gardens' assembly member called for a review of Hawaiian Gardens card-club development plan. It also reports that city attorney Julia Sylva, a Moskowitz opponent, resigned after a new solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office. "HAWAIIAN GARDENS - Assemblyman Alan Lowenthal, D-Long Beach, said Wednesday he wants to review Hawaiian Gardens' card-club development plan to determine whether state law restrictions on public-fund use is being ignored. The city's Redevelopment Agency has been involved with Irving Moskowitz for the past few years in an effort to build a multimillion dollar card club - and the city's tab has reached about the halfway mark of a potential $20 million bill, according to former City Attorney Julia Sylva." Meanwhile, as a new, solidly pro-Moskowitz government took office, Julia Sylva, the Hawaiian Gardens city attorney long at odds with Moskowitz' attorney and local potentate Beryl Weiner, resigned. W e mentioned it in our overall guide to Hawaiian cuisine , but it's worth a mention here, too. The plate lunch is as big a part of life in Honolulu as surfing and avoiding overly-strenuous work. It is served mainly out of mobile roadside carts throughout the city and consists of beef or pork, Hawaiian noodles, two scoops of rice and sometimes macaroni salad. For around $5, it's one of Hawaii's best food values. It's also delicious. It's so popular here that its served as a drive-thru, the L&L Drive-in. There are locations all over the island, including one just inland of Duke's on Kuho Ave., just Ewa of the International Marketplace (this is a walk-in place, with tables or food to-go, called L&L Hawaiian Barbeque). There's also the Rainbow Drive-in. Another inexpensive lunch option is Auntie Pasta's (Beritiana and Pensacola). It has great Italian food for $6-10. There's no parking, though. While we're on the budget items, Magoo's is a local pizza place that's as much of attraction for the cheap beer as it is the food. Young locals go here to eat, drink and be merry. The best food deal in Honolulu is, without question, Happy Hour at the Chart House. It features large appetizers at Chart House quality for $5-7. Served in the bar area, it overlooks sunset at the Gilligan's Island harbor. There's always a slight breeze blowing, a mellow musician and drinks also at Happy Hour prices ($3 for a pint of local lager). It's just above the Harbor Pub, which has arguably the island's best pizza. Beers are just $1.25 from 4-7 and the cocktails are a strong pour. The Shack is a wooden, well, shack, that serves fantastic burgers and cold beer right on the water in Kailua on Ohau's windward side. It's far from the tourist areas and has sister locations in Los Angeles. and Tuesdays are "Shack attack" days, meaning all burgers are $1 cheaper. A couple of finer restaurant choices are Roy's in Hawaii Kai (just past Maunalua Bay) for Euro/American fare. There are 25 nightly specials and an extensive wine list. Sam Choy's on the edge of downtown is one of the best spots for authentic Hawaii food. Gordon Biersch is a small national micobrewery chain, but the food is terrific. Located in Aloha Towers, it's a popular eating/gathering spot, making it an ideal place to drink, socialize and nourish. Sansei is a rock 'n roll sushi place in the Marriott (sushi is half-off every night after 10 p.m.). It gets a good bar crowd, too. Angelo Pietro's is another restaurant/bar that's more of a bar than a restaurant on Sunday nights. Same deal with the Brew Moon , a microbrewery in the Ward Center. But don't miss the Asian/French fusion at Angelo Pietro's, one of the locals' favorite dining spots. One the fine dining side, Michel's in the Colony Surf Hotel is one of Honolulu's best restaurants. It's French and expensive and men need a jacket (they will provide one for those who packed only, say, Aloha shirts). Ask for "Antie Eva" for the royal treatment. This traditional dining spot has been a tradition since opening in 1962. For all-night munchies within stumbling distance of the bars is the Wailana Coffee House across the street from the Hilton). It's an upscale coffee house open 24 hours. We can't vouch for the quality of the food, but late at night, it's often a place's location that matters more than its taste. Bar trivia: Wilt Chamberlain used to live above the Wailana when he was in Honolulu. He could be found playing handball on the courts by the beach almost daily. My copy is falling apart from overuse. Most recipes have long lists of spices, but the actual preparation is simple. Excellent substitutions (ex: orange roughy for pink snapper, not normally found on the mainland) are recommended, and the suggested wine pairings are very helpful.
