American Classic Voyages Inc. filed for bankruptcy protection just 38 days after the attack and shut down its Hawaii operations, scuttling plans for two new ships. Since then, however, the Hawaii cruise ship industry has made an aggressive recovery. It has seen unprecedented growth, led by Norwegian Cruise Line and fueled by vacation-starved baby boomers. What used to be a seasonal business with a few ships making calls here, is now a year-round mainstay with Hawaii's ports bustling with activity. "For us, it's a huge market," said Robert Kritzman, NCL's executive vice president and managing director of Hawaii operations. "Very few people have cruised Hawaii. There's an untapped market still there and Hawaii is a phenomenal place to come through." Norwegian, which operates the U.S. subsidiary NCL America, is betting big on Hawaii, spending $1.4 billion on three luxury liners to serve the islands. The Miami-based company estimates it will own about 85 percent of the cruise ship market here by 2007. The 1,900-passenger Pride of Aloha was the first, introduced in 2004. Formerly the Norwegian Sky, it was redesigned with a Hawaii theme and reflagged to a U.S. vessel, allowing it to carry passengers solely between U.S. ports. The brand new 2,100-passenger Pride of America made its debut in June 2005 as the largest U.S.-flagged cruise ship ever. By the time its sister ship, the Pride of Hawaii, is built and arrives in the summer of 2006, the company will have three year-round lavish cruise ships -- as well as a seasonal foreign-flagged vessel -- carrying an estimated 8,000 passengers per week. "Being able to welcome an additional 8,000 people on a weekly basis will allow us to continue to grow our economy because we are almost at our capacity where our land-based accommodations are concerned," said Marsha Weinert, the state's tourism liaison. In July 2005, Hawaii hosted 22,725 cruise ship passengers, up 57 percent from July 2004, according to the latest state figures. Hawaii had 151,164 cruise passengers this year through July 2005, up 34.6 percent from the first seven months of 2004. About two-thirds of the visitors are extending their vacations and staying a couple days in hotels or time-share units. John Hansen, president of the North West Cruiseship Association, projects the number of cruise ship passengers in Hawaii will exceed 400,000 in 2006, up from about a peak of 150,000 annually before the 2001 terrorist attacks. However, the rapid growth can be seen worldwide. In 2004, nearly 10.5 million people took a vacation cruise, an increase of nearly 40 percent from 2001, according to figures on the Cruise Lines International Association's Web site. Hansen said that five years ago there were just four key cruise ports: Los Angeles, Miami, Fort Lauderdale, Fla., and Vancouver, British Columbia. Today, there are more than 20 key homeports that have emerged including Honolulu, Seattle, San Francisco, San Diego, Boston, Baltimore, Norfolk, Va., and Jacksonville, Fla. Many states are pouring millions of dollars into upgrading their cruise facilities to cash in on the cruise boom. Kritzman said a major benefit of a cruise vacation is value. Included in the fare are transportation, lodging, food and entertainment. "We think it's a great way to see Hawaii, especially for the first-time visitor," he said. "They get to see all four major islands while packing and unpacking once." The ships also provide a unique vantage point of the islands, sailing sail past the glowing lava fields of Kilauea volcano on the Big Island, the remote green peaks of the Na Pali coast on Kauai's North Shore and the urban cityscape of Oahu. Kritzman said the growth wouldn't have been possible without federal legislation enacted after the terrorist attacks. The law exempts NCL's ships from a rule that prohibits foreign-built ships from operating between U.S. ports. It also requires the cruise line to employ American crews and abide by all U.S. labor laws, including paying overtime. NCL estimates that labor on a U.S. vessel costs more than three times that of a foreign-flagged vessel. But not everyone has been a fan of the cruise ships. Environmentalists say cruise ships harm Hawaii's sensitive ecosystem, including its pristine coral reefs, and threaten the rural charm of the islands. They have long complained about a lack of oversight and laws regulating the cruise ship industry in Hawaii. "This is not Florida. This is a fragile island that is creaking under the weight of people," said Cha Smith, executive director of KAHEA, an advocate for environmental and native Hawaiian causes. KAHEA is working on launching a program called, "Na Maka O Ke Kai," or the "Eyes of the Ocean," encouraging people to report fouled water or debris left behind by cruise ships, which they call "giant floating cities." Kritzman said his state-of-the-art ships go far beyond what is required by law. The ships are self-sufficient, each generating its own electricity and drinking water. The vessels also treat sewage through a high-tech filtration process with the sludge heated and dried to be offloaded or burned in the ship's incinerator. "I think this is a very low-impact form of tourism. We think this does not have the same impact as building a resort," Kritzman said. If You Go... My drive today takes me from one season into another. I start the day in the endless summer that is Kailua-Kona-temperature a perfect, breezy 80 degrees F, but by afternoon I'm in the eternal 55-degree autumn of volcano country. Only in Hawaii. Break for the Coffee Belt I go from Kona to volcano country on Highway 11 or 180 via the Kona Coffee Belt, home of the famed, expensive bean. It's a world in miniature-tiny shops and houses tilting over the edge of lush green slopes with views of the misty blue Pacific 1,500 feet below. Make sure Driver Guy keeps his eye on the narrow, winding road as it passes through the scenic coffee villages of Holualoa, Honalo, Kainaliu, Kealakekua and Captain Cook. In the village of Holualoa, I always park in front of the rickety Kona Inn Hotel and run in to use its novel men's room. The restrooms are perched on a green cliff, with open-air views of the Pacific. Guaranteed your guy will get a huge kick out of this one. Treat this part of the drive as a coffee-tasting experience. Greenwell Farms, family-owned since 1873, lets you tour its orchards, which are white as snow in the spring when the first coffee blossoms pop out. Be sure to take home a pound or two of beans. They make a cup of joe that's wonderfully rich and strong-and redolent of the Big Island. Entering cattle country Volcano country a-waits, so head south on Highway 11. Road signs indicate the dates of the volcanic eruptions (1950, 1919, 1907) that sent lava bubbling down the slopes from the 13,680-foot Mauna Loa, which looms in the clouds somewhere above you. You'll pass in and out of thickets of eucalyptus. The smell of ripening mangoes makes the air seem-and almost taste-sticky sweet. (I always carry a plastic bag and a pocket knife on Hawaii drives. You never know when you might want to stop and pluck something tasty off a tree.) Just beyond Milolii, a quaint fishing village, follow a sign to South Point. Now you'll rumble through hot, arid cattle country. At South Point, you'll stand on a sheer and lonely bluff above the misty Pacific, the southernmost point in the U.S., the spot where the Polynesians, up from the South Pacific in outrigger canoes, first landed on these shores a thousand years ago. The first time I saw this killer view I vowed to myself, "You won't come back here alone." And I was right. When I next returned some years later, I brought my wife, who loved the whole area. However, she reminded me that she wasn't too keen on heights. We drove a short distance through the sagebrush and mesquite wilds to another end-of-the-world bay. Here she felt a little better. We gazed at some giant logs that lined the shore like lawn furniture, which had drifted all the way here from the Pacific Northwest. And you know, one made a perfect backrest for two. Hitting Hawaii Volcanoes National Park Now get set for the big climate change. You pass from summer to fall as you drive the last miles to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. The park, 340 square miles, is all rain forest, dripping ferns and steaming fissures. Take the Crater Rim Drive, an 11-mile loop of the vast Kilauea caldera, at the center of which lies the always-steaming Halemaumau fire pit. The road dips through fern jungles, lava desert and plumes of sulphurous smoke. It's enough to give you the shivers. So warm your bones in the Volcano House, a venerable inn with tall windows looking onto the steaming caldera. The inn has a big lava-stone fireplace where a log fire has burned nonstop for 60-plus years-yes, they actually keep it stoked night and day. You can sit by the fireplace and take a nap (no one will disturb you). For dinner try Surt's, a cool cafe in the old Volcano Store. Then point the car downhill toward summer. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Grand Cruise Liner Saved from Scrap Yard - For Now Until its bankruptcy in late 2001, American Hawaii Cruises' classic U.S.-flag ocean liner, the S.S. Independence, sailed exclusively around the Hawaiian Islands 12 months of the year on weeklong cruises. After the collapse of American Classic Voyages, the Independence sailed to the Alameda Naval Air Station. On March 5, 2002, her mast hit the Carquinez Bridge while being towed by four tugs. The Independence was on her way to Suisan Bay, but was taken back to Pier 50 in San Francisco for repairs. The Independence was subsequently moored in April 2002 with the Suisun Reserve Fleet in Suisan Bay, California near the USS Iowa. In February 2003, the Independence was sold at auction for $4 million to Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL hopes to add the Independence to its U.S.-flagged fleet. Norwegian will begin sailing its U.S.-flagged ships in Hawaii in 2004. The Independence was originally launched during the heyday of ocean travel in 1950, but was treated to more than $78 million in refurbishments from 1994 to 2001. The ship is one of the few major cruise ships built in the United States, having been constructed at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts for American Export Lines of New York. It was intended for use as a trans-Atlantic passenger liner--yet, it adhered to post-World War II U.S. Navy specifications to permit rapid conversion into a troop ship, with a capacity for 5,000 men and their equipment. The vessel, as originally designed, was made entirely of non-combustible or fire-resistant materials and featured extra hull plating--and two engine rooms so that if one were damaged, the other could keep the ship moving at a relatively high speed. Everyone who loves old ocean liners can hope that NCL will be able to add the Independence to its fleet and save her from the scrap yard.   Topic Index | Email to a Friend Our Story | Be a Guide | Advertising Info | Work at About | Site Map | Icons | Help User Agreement | Ethics Policy | Patent Info. | Privacy Policy | Kids' Privacy Policy ©2006 About, Inc., A part of The New York Times Company .
