This is a problem in Wailea where you're more or less dependent on your hotel. When we first checked in we loved the view and the balcony, and the place was huge. However we got tired of having to pay resort prices, but still had to drive down the hill to find an open restaurant or bar, or even go to the beach. The Japanese-style baths were cold and not relaxing. I have been to hot spring baths in Japan, and that is an inviting and invigorating experience. This was not. There is also a normal pool and hot tub, but they are only open until 6 pm! There are three restaurants: two Japanese, and one Italian. The Japanese-French one is not really haute cuisine like they make it sound. That's probably why the restaurant is almost always completely empty. The Italian restaurant is a little more lively, and we enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor bar there, but it doesn't stay open late like other bars in Maui. We didn't visit the third, because it was always closed. The condo has a Japanese-style shower-room and separate toilet room. These could have been cleaner, or updated. The kitchen was very small with a mini electric stove and no oven, no microwave, no dishwasher, no dish drainer. And you had to rent a set of pots that didn't include much. The refrigerator was tiny and filled with frost, and froze all our food, so we didn't cook very much in the room. The king bed really is two twins pushed together. I couldn't believe it. The employees were very nice, though it's true that not many spoke English well enough to give you tourism advice or directions. I think that's a primary function of any hotel and shouldn't be overlooked. The grounds are well kept and the sunsets are a glorious sight from your balcony. It's very quiet with no children and I appreciated that. But as we visited other Wailea resorts throughout the week, and sat on their beaches with tropical drinks, and ate at fun restaurants, and watched people relax on loungers at the pool all day, I couldn't help but feel that was the Maui experience we had wanted to have, and the Diamond was just lacking. My advice is either to pay more for a true Wailea resort on the beach, or stay in a friendly condo in laid-back Kihei. The grounds are okay, but the grounds next to the rooms were unattended too and unpleasant to see. The bathroom shower needed to be cleaned (by myself) with a pot scruber. The need to rent kitchen materials was a major disppointment and let down. The microwave also had to be rented. Such items are standard in places where we have paid 125% less. The Japanese dinning was great on service, small on food and a bit too costly to us. The spa area was the highlight of the stay. The 'body shower' and 'waterfall' were just what the body ordered! The need to pay for gym sessions with a personal trainer were also a disappointment. On vacation, we generally want to work out at our leisure, not be subjected to unwarrented training sessions. After paying for an overprice room the additional charges for all of the other basic items made this a place that we will not return. Traveler rating: Maui: Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa : "Perfect Change of Pace" Sep 10, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Beltsville, MD Compare prices with: I just took the family (wife (44), son (22) and daughters (19,17)) to Maui for 3 nights and Waikiki for 5, so we opened our trip at the Diamond Resort, which is really in Wialea. This was the perfect change of pace resort after a long flight from the east coast. The free spa is tremendous and relaxing (I hit it every night and my 17 year old had a facial and massage that made her trip - $100), and the rooms (really suites) were so clean and spacious. The property is large measured by land but very small measured by number of rooms, so you really get great treatment by the staff buy can hide away by yourself for peace and quiet if that's what you want. My daughters went to the Japanese restaurant at the resort and said it was the best. They also have a renowned Italian restaurant there, but I didn't try it. My one criticism is the king bed really isn't a king but two beds together, and the pillows were not great. And here is a tip...if you're older and/or don't walk very well, make sure you tell them so they can put you in a room that is close to the main level. The property is dramatically placed on a hill, so the lower you are the closer you are to the ocean but the more you have to walk up and down the hill. My kids were in building 20 and we were in building 1, and there room was much better than ours in term of walking and panoramic view. Even with these quirks, I give The Diamond Resort 4.5 stars; I knew my wife and I would love the place when I booked it, but I was shocked at how much my children loved it too. The rooms are spacious and though we had a Garden View Room all rooms are ocean facing and we had a partial view of the ocean from the first floor. We enjoyed lovely sunsets from our location. The bed was MASSIVE and I loved the two white spa robes that were provided. And it was so cute that they provided a green tea set along with american coffee cups and coffeemaker. Whatever coffee or green tea we used was replenished daily by the maid service and our tea/coffee cups were cleaned by the service. It may be a minor inconvenience to rent cookware for $4 a day - but the cost is really nominal, and frankly who cooks all that much on vacation? The kitchen (more of a kitchenette) was really rather small to create a culinary masterpiece anyway - just 2 burners and a dorm size fridge. With all the spectacular restaurants in Maui we never ran out of options in 2 weeks. Also, I wanted to address some of the earlier reviewers' comments which are really misleading. First, while I will agree that this resort caters to a primarily Japanese clientele, I spoke with the front desk staff a few times, to have them change the time of our dinner reservation, ask general questions, and schedule spa appointments - there was no barrier in communication and things were handled as requested each time. In fact, the staff was mostly Hawaiian, so it is untrue that they only understand Japanese. Second, prior to our stay at Diamond it was very clear to me that the use of their fitness facilities are only for those who are using their personal trainers. I thought this limitation was unfortunate, but this is fairly clear. Their was no information in the brochure or the DR website to make you think otherwise. Aside from this, I just wanted to mention that the views were spectacular, I had a sublime facial at their spa - it lasted over an hour, we enjoyed feeding the koi that are in all the pools and waterfalls that are woven throughout the grounds (DR sells bags of food for just a $1), and their restaurant Capisché? ranks with the top restaurants in Maui for a reason - they have an extensive wine list, sophisticated menu and delicious food. The entire resort staff was very gracious and attentive to our needs during our stay. If you are looking for tranquility, privacy and amazing views, I would highly recommend this unique experience. And it is minutes from some of the best beaches and shopping in Maui. It is also one of the most economical places to stay in beautifully manicured landscape of Wailea. Thanks! Maui Windsurfing

The Maui Windsurfing DAILY Report MWR Daily Report September 23rd, 1997 I ran the other way!... Well, it happened... (actually a lot of happened but I'll get to that) What happened? The first north swell of the winter happened. Came in to Maui last night and was glorious at 10-15'. Unfortunately, although it seemed windy, it was one of those onshore "fools winds" But nobody was that foolish. I hung around Hoo'kipa for about an hour to see if anyone was gonna dare it but I was stuck talkin story with the homeys. Then, a light went off in my pea brain.... it was tellin me, "Go to the south shore you wind maggot! Can't you see that if it's onshore on the north shore that its probably windy as hell on the south shore.?" I had to answer myself by truckin on down there. I wasn't disappointed. It was fully 5.0 (more like 4.7 but I was too stoked to come back and re-rig) and the waves were like head high. Fully bashable.. I did have one negative incident and that was when I was standing in waist deep water, playin with my lines when suddenly I look up and there's some giant BIC board bearing down on me. I make a frantic leap and barely get out of the way but I hear this most terrible sound of a "bonk." I realize I'm still alive but I see this guy who barely speak s English (he barely speaks at all cause I'm screamin and yellin at him for almost killin me.) I have to admit that I fully went off on the guy, especially when I see that there's a ding in my brand new, virgin and unreal stick. I was goin frickin bananas! (You boardheads that know me can quit laughing NOW!) Well, I sorta got my composure back and told him to meet me at the beach. (We were at Maui Sunset) At the beach I tell him that I'm sorry for yelling and he blurbs off something about paying for the ding in my board. Actually, I can hardly understand this fellow but he now has my attention as he's talkin my language, MONEY! We settle on a price for the repair ($50) and I again apologize for lighting up like a volcano on him. He says something like, "it's OK." So I feel like everybody is allright now.... the guy goes his way I look at my brand new board which is now just another stick on the street Surf life will never be the same..... Music Style - Slack Key If you do not have any Gabby Pahinui in your Hawaiian Music Collection, then you are missingout on one of the most admired and talented Hawaiian Artists of all time. Gabby is commonly referred to as the best slack key guitar player of all time. When you put on thisclassic CD from 1972, you will quickly understand why. Unlike other sites that review CD's, ourreviews tend to focus on CD's that everyone should have as part of their collection. Gabby certainly falls into this category. In fact, I believe that most Hawaiians willagree with me when I say every Gabby CD (including this one) is a classic and you will wantto pick up several. Gabby is more commonly known as the Brown Album . Its hard for me to say that itis my favorite Gabby Pahinui CD, because I love all the Gabby CD's and albums that I own.However, the Brown Album and the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol 1 certainlyrank as 2 of my most listened to CD's. The Brown Album contains many of Gabby's most recognized mele's. One of Gabby'smost popular songs is Hi'ilawe . This CD starts with an early rendition of this song recorded by Gabby in 1947 and ends with a version recorded in 1972. The 1947 versionwas Gabby's first recording at age 26. Hi'ilawe has to be one of most cherished Hawaiian mele's of all time. It picks me up whenever I hearthe incredible guitar strumming. Gabby's voice seems to capture the spirit of Hawaii. Even today when I hear Gabby's son, Cyril, play thismele I get chills. Cyril sounds a lot like his Dad. Wow, I am already on my forth paragraph and I have only described one song. You can see Ihave a real passion for Gabby's music. Some of the other classics on this CD include Luau Hula , He'eia , Lei Nani , and Ka Moa'e and several others that were recorded withthe legendary 'Atta' Isaacs and 'Joe Gang' Kapahu. You'll love the conversations between themat the end of Ka Moa'e . Gabby's sons Cyril, Bla, Philip, and Martin are also featuredon the CD. All share the incredible music talent of their father and have many recordings of theirown that are wonderful. One thing that you will quickly notice when you put on this CD is how it lifts your spirits.Gabby Pahinui slack key is spirited and fun. You can't help being in a great mood when you listento this CD. The way the Gabby, Atta, Joe Gang, and Gabby's sons blend their instrumentsinto perfect harmony is beyond description. It has to be experienced. Sadly, Gabby passed away in 1980, but through his CD's his music lives on. If you want to know more about Gabby, I would recommend Jonathon Wong's Gabby Pahinui Tribute website. The quality of the music is excellent. 4 Coconuts - These CD's are highly recommended. Although they are not necessarily classics, most Hawaiian Music Fans will really enjoy them. 3 Coconuts - These are CD's that some people will love, but others will not care for as much. I have always loved seeing how happy couples are to receive beautiful Hawaii wedding photographs and video. I know most couples who plan a Hawaii wedding would like to have an excellent chance to get a Romantic Sunset Photograph at the end of their Hawaii wedding. Sadly most locations won't have a sunset and most photographers don't know how to capture it on film correctly even if it did happen. New - There are many couples who come to Hawaii who think that the weather in Hawaii is always nice. Many advertisements offer a sunset wedding package even though the sunset is on the opposite side of the island. This is quite common on Kauai and Oahu. People just don't ask enough questions. Hawaii also gets rain all the time. I worked on Kauai for six years and have seen it rain on far too many weddings. The sunsets are almost never visible.Nearly 50% of Kauai weddings get rain. Hanalei gets so much rain you could have a very wet vacation. It can be very nice but you never know. Maui's free locations are usually very small and crowded. The last two times I was on Maui it rained in Wailea and Lahina. I have seen as many as 14 couples show up at the same beach for a wedding.Oahu is fun and has good shopping, I don't consider it a romantic place. Many couples sit in traffic on their wedding day. I know the best sunset wedding location in Hawaii - and it's free. The sunsets are the best in Hawaii all year. It's like a machine - almost every night. Up at Waikoloa, just 25 miles from Kailua Kona on The Big Island of Hawaii, the rainfall is about 6 inches a year. Very little rain and excellent hotels and activities.What a great combination . Other locations on Hawaii Island aren't nearly as nice. I know several of the very best Licensed Ministersin Hawaii and we are offering an unbeatable wedding package. No one who wants great Photo's likes rain. Here in Waikoloa you have less than 2% chance of rain and 95% chance of a great sunset. We charge less than many other photographers who don't have the equipment or experience that I do. One pro color film, one digital and one backup. This is a slow move to digital. Pro film is still nice with bright highlights - like sunset. Digital images are made availabe on your free web site. I am not substituting to save money on film, it's just that digital is so nice. Actually I am spending lots of money because of the additional cameras, flash and memory cards. Also digital creates endless hours on the computer, but I feel it's worth it now - with the new cameras available. I am always striving to be the very best I can. The prints from digital are made on the same pro photo paper at our lab - made to last 100 years. Digital has arrived and it requires photographers to be computer geeks. I have been editing digital video for years already. Another really great feature about having everything on CD is my ability to edit in some of the best images from the photo shoot when making wedding DVD's - really impressive. Recently we had some bad weather pass by Hawaii. The clouds turned really nice colors after sunset - very very low light and after sunset. With the digital camera I was ready to capture the moment. The scene lasted less than TWO MINUTES. The flexability of digital allowed me dial in the equivelent of ASA 800 film to capture another very special photograph for them - along with the pro film - it's an added benefit that doesn't take away from what I've been doing for many years. This flexability (changing film speed in 10 seconds) is really wonderful. The other benefits of having everything on CD things like cropping and simple retouching at no charge. Also I can make an unlimited number of images. This is great for Photo Journalism style combined with the traditional. Also, if we have everything on CD, magazine style wedding album pages are possible in PhotoShop CS - really cool. Digital cannot be ignored and we are already a digital studio (video).Digital Video is way more complex than Digital Stills. Usually I email the password once the site is ready. Normally I will leave the site up for 60 days. Should family members want prints they can also order direct.
