I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. Traveler rating: Honolulu: Aqua Kuhio Village : "Hell Hole-Stay Away From This Place" Mar 26, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Los Angeles, Ca Compare prices with: I stayed from March 18-March 25. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them. Hawaiian Music Collection, then

Stevo's Hawaiian Music Guide - Featured CD: Gabby Pahinui - Gabby Gabby Pahinui - Gabby (Brown Album) Rating: Reviewed May 2001 by Stevo - See how our 'Coconut' rating system works below. Music Style - Slack Key If you do not have any Gabby Pahinui in your Hawaiian Music Collection, then you are missingout on one of the most admired and talented Hawaiian Artists of all time. Gabby is commonly referred to as the best slack key guitar player of all time. When you put on thisclassic CD from 1972, you will quickly understand why. Unlike other sites that review CD's, ourreviews tend to focus on CD's that everyone should have as part of their collection. Gabby certainly falls into this category. In fact, I believe that most Hawaiians willagree with me when I say every Gabby CD (including this one) is a classic and you will wantto pick up several. Gabby is more commonly known as the Brown Album . Its hard for me to say that itis my favorite Gabby Pahinui CD, because I love all the Gabby CD's and albums that I own. However, the Brown Album and the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol 1 certainlyrank as 2 of my most listened to CD's. The Brown Album contains many of Gabby's most recognized mele's. One of Gabby'smost popular songs is Hi'ilawe . This CD starts with an early rendition of this song recorded by Gabby in 1947 and ends with a version recorded in 1972. The 1947 versionwas Gabby's first recording at age 26. Hi'ilawe has to be one of most cherished Hawaiian mele's of all time. It picks me up whenever I hearthe incredible guitar strumming. Gabby's voice seems to capture the spirit of Hawaii. Even today when I hear Gabby's son, Cyril, play thismele I get chills. Cyril sounds a lot like his Dad. Wow, I am already on my forth paragraph and I have only described one song. You can see Ihave a real passion for Gabby's music. Some of the other classics on this CD include Luau Hula , He'eia , Lei Nani , and Ka Moa'e and several others that were recorded withthe legendary 'Atta' Isaacs and 'Joe Gang' Kapahu. You'll love the conversations between themat the end of Ka Moa'e . Gabby's sons Cyril, Bla, Philip, and Martin are also featuredon the CD. All share the incredible music talent of their father and have many recordings of theirown that are wonderful. One thing that you will quickly notice when you put on this CD is how it lifts your spirits.Gabby Pahinui slack key is spirited and fun. You can't help being in a great mood when you listento this CD. The way the Gabby, Atta, Joe Gang, and Gabby's sons blend their instrumentsinto perfect harmony is beyond description. It has to be experienced. Sadly, Gabby passed away in 1980, but through his CD's his music lives on. If you want to know more about Gabby, I would recommend Jonathon Wong's Gabby Pahinui Tribute website. The CD contains the following: Hi'ilawe-1947/Luau Hula Lihue He'eia Ka Makani Ka 'Ili Aloha Lei Ohu Royal Hawaiian Hotel - A wonderful rendition of this classic Keawaiki Leahi Wai O Ke Aniani Ka'ahumanu Lei Nani Lei No Ka'iulani Ka Moa'e Hula O Makee Hame Pila Hi'ilawe-1972/Aloha O'e This is a 5 coconut CD, a 'must' addition to your Hawaiian Music collection. This CDis available from one of the retailerson our Sources of Tapes & CD's page. How our rating system works 5 Coconuts - These CD's are must have CD's that every Hawaiian Musicfan should have in their collection. They are classics that you will play over and over for years. The quality of the music is excellent. 4 Coconuts - These CD's are highly recommended. Although they are not necessarily classics, most Hawaiian Music Fans will really enjoy them. 3 Coconuts - These are CD's that some people will love, but others will not care for as much. Overall, though, they contain good quality music and are a nice addition to your collection. 2 Coconuts - These are good CD's, but won't appeal to everyone. 1 Coconut - These CD's would only appeal to a small percentage of people...like the artist's auntie ;-) Because a large percentage of our e-mail are requests for CD recommendations, our reviews will typically focus on CD's ranked 4 and 5 coconuts, with a few 3 coconut CD's sprinkled in.

HAWAIIAN QUILTING FROM HONU HALE Search: The Web Tripod Walk the Line Share This Page Report Abuse Edit your Site Browse Sites « Previous | Top 100 | Next » HONU HALE Quiltmaking PUTTING IT ALL TOGETHER WHAT YOU WILL NEED Your quilt top is now finished. Most quilters pull out basting threads as they applique but if any remain, this is the time to remove them. Isn't it beautiful and aren't you proud of yourself? You should be. Now you are ready to assemble your quilt. Batting can be bought by the yard in fabric stores but it is far easier to buy seamless sheets in the size you need. They are available in everything from Crib (45"x 60") to King (120"x 120") size at Variety stores, some fabric shops and of course from quilting supply stores and catalogs. There are some excellent on-line resources for telephone orders, eg. Hancocks or Keepsake Quilting; see LINKS page. Most quilters use polyester batting but pure cotton and poly/cotton blends are also available. Batting thickness is largely a matter of personal preference. The thinner the batting, the easier to quilt and the smaller your stitches will be. A very thick batting can result in a quilt which is too heavy to use as a bedspread, particularly in a warm climate. It will however, make a quilt which is "puffier" and more sculptured in appearance. There are definate differences between brands of batting and you may want to check out several different ones. Hobbs Polydown is a good, all-purpose choice used by many quilters. Backing: Remember that third large square of fabric you set aside months ago. Now is the time for it to come out of hiding to become the back of your quilt. If you didn't do it before, press it exactly as you did the other squares; lengthwise into halves, then into quarters, then eighths. ASSEMBLY For this step, you will again need the large flat surface -- several tables or the floor -- which you used to lay out your quilt face prior to appliqueing. Just as you did then, spread the fabric for the back of your quilt flat and fasten at the edges. Over this spread your sheet of batting making sure it lies smoothly, covering the entire back of quilt. Finally, (at last), spread your quilt top over the other two layers matching folds in face and back. Be very sure that the fabric grain in both pieces runs in the same direction. If it doesn't, quilting will be almost impossible since the "give" in fabric differs with grain direction. Check around edges of layout to make sure the fabric layers match at center folds and corners. Some adjusting and smoothing will almost certainly be necessary. Batting will probably protrude beyond edges. It should, you can trim it later. Using long quilters' pins, fasten edges loosely together. Starting in the center, pin all layers together, first along fold lines including diagonals, then securing layers with more pins about 12-14 inches apart throughout the quilt. There is no need to measure, just be sure all layers are firmly pinned. Finally, unfasten from surface, pin edges neatly and trim off surplus batting a few inches beyond edge of quilt. Your quilt is now ready to be moved to a table for basting. BASTING You now have an assembled quilt, pinned together and draped over a table. Start at the the center,(tired of that - OK - the "PIKO" ) with a long basting needle and regular sewing thread, preferably white. Taking large stitches, 11/2-2 inches, baste along the fold line through alllayers, to one of the outside edges. Take 2-3 loose stitches to end thread. Return to the center and repeat, basting to opposite edge. Now, move out 10-12 inches from center line which you have basted. Starting at center fold,( not quilt center), again baste out to both edges, parallel to previous basting. Measuring and placing pins to insure a straight line may be helpful but is not essential. Continue this process on both sides of quilt, working in opposite directions from center fold.Smooth out any surplus fabric on either face or back, as you go. When you reach the edges, parallell to your basting lines, place your last row of basting approximately where you want your finished quilt edge to be. Ideally, this line should be an equal distance from all outside edges of your pattern. In reality this may not be quite so, try for fairly equal. At this point your quilt is basted in one direction. Turn it around and do exactly the same thing going in the opposite direction. The finished result will be a grid of neatly basted squares which will hold all parts of your quilt together as you work. Trim all outside edges 3-4 inches beyond edge of basting. Part of this surplus will eventually go inside your quilt binding. The rest allows for adjustments and can be trimmed off later. TRANSITIONS This is another step which has gone rather quickly. If you belong to a quilt club and were lucky enough to have had help from other quilters, it probably took only a few hours; if you are working alone, a day or two. At this point, many experienced quilters choose to start a second quilt. The reason is simple, while quilting on one they are appliqueing on the second. This introduces an element of variety into the work and eliminates any possible boredom which may result from looking at the same quilt every day for months on end. Of course anyone who decides to do this is clearly hooked on Hawaiian quilting. Believe it or not your quilt is now more than half finished. From here on you will be working with the fully assembled quilt as you master the fine art of quilting. Did you spread it out on a bed yet to admire? If you didn't, by all means do before you continue. Honu_Hale@yahoo.com Index Page 6 Quiltmaking -- Getting ready to quilt.
