For an entire century, the District has served with pride and distinction.I have personally witnessed their hard work and dedication to improve the lives of our fellow citizens in many ways. The Pacific Connection's Centennial issue, produced and distributed by the POH Public Affairs Office, celebrates 100 years of service by the Corps of Engineers in Hawaii to the Pacific Region and the nation. They have never failed to answer the call. The District has had a significant impact on the ability of our servicemen and women to fight the global war on terror, it has bolstered the region’s economy and worked to enhance the safety of communities in and about waterways and the functional ability of the many major harbors in my home State of Hawaii. In everything they do they safeguard the environment. From civil works projects navigation, flood control and shore protection to building and maintaining the infrastructure for our military personnel, the Honolulu District is proud of its service. The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers’ missions in the Pacific region have expanded exponentially since the unit’s conception in 1905 when Lt. John R. Even if you have never snorkeled or can't swim, Snuba diving is available to you. Snuba is easily accessible to couples, families, children eight years and older, and seniors. It is a great way for a certified diver to introduce non-certified partners to the underwater breathing experience. Snuba divers breathe underwater by means of a 20-foot air line , which is connected to a standard scuba tank. The tank is mounted on a raft on the surface that follows your every movement. The airline allows you to tour underwater near the bottom, at mid-water or on the surface depending on your level of comfort. There is no heavy diving gear. Every Snuba tour is guided by a diving professional. Your guide will familiarize you with the Snuba equipment you will be using and briefly describe what you can expect in the water. You will start in shallow water and take whatever time necessary to get comfortable breathing underwater. Once comfortable, you are then taken on a guided underwater tour. During the dive you are never more than 20 feet from the security of the raft floating on the surface . You will get the feeling that you are swimming in an aquarium surrounded by tropical fish. The Hawaiian reefs we Snuba dive in have abundant marine life, many of which are found only in the Hawaiian Islands. Dive into the underwater world and learn more about Hawaiian Marine Life. We begin and end our dive from the sandy shores of Lawai beach. An outer reef protect our bay where many colorful fish and diverse marine life make their home. Hawaii Volcano

Introduction to Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i Eruption Update Eruption Summary Hazards History Panorama Images Kilauea -- Perhaps the World's Most Active Volcano View north-northeast across Kilauea's summit caldera and Halema`uma`u crater (left of center) Kilauea is the youngest and southeastern most volcano on the Big Island of Hawai`i. Topographically Kilauea appears as only a bulge on the southeastern flank of Mauna Loa, and so for many years Kilauea was thought to be a mere satellite of its giant neighbor, not a separate volcano. However, research over the past few decades shows clearly that Kilauea has its own magma-plumbing system, extending to the surface from more than 60 km deep in the earth. In fact, the summit of Kilauea lies on a curving line of volcanoes that includes Mauna Kea and Kohala and excludes Mauna Loa. In other words, Kilauea is to Mauna Kea as Lo`ihi is to Mauna Loa. Hawaiians used the word Kilauea only for the summit caldera, but earth scientists and, over time, popular usage have extended the name to include the entire volcano. 11 October 2002 The eruption of Kilauea Volcano that began in 1983 continues at the cinder-and-spatter cone of Pu`u `O`o (high point on skyline). Hawaiian chants and oral traditions tell in veiled form of many eruptions fomented by an angry Pele before the first European, the missionary Rev. William Ellis, saw the summit in 1823. The caldera was the site of nearly continuous activity during the 19th century and the early part of this century. Since 1952 there have been 34 eruptions, and since January 1983 eruptive activity has been continuous along the east rift zone.
