The kalua pig was too watery for me and lacked enough of the smokey taste I was expecting. I also ordered the Curry beef and I guess I missed the point because I thought it would be a beef curry stew. Instead it was the kalbi shortrib meat (boneless) in a dark curry sauce. Does Zippys serve things like this or is it a Lukoki invention? Oh well. We did try Onos in Half Moon Bay. Really excellant kalua pig and nice size portion. He worked at genetech for like 15-20 years, and now wants to start a Hawaiian BBQ restaurant in Tanferan Shopping Mall. Pretty crazy, but his wife is behind him (and allowing him to do it). Dunno when theyre opening yet, but I hear sometime early in 2006. Ill have to check it out and let ya know how it is. We stopped there the other night and their Kalua Pig is awesome, really moist. My gf and I didnt try their Hawaiian BBQ items yet, but we did try their desserts, Banana Kine & Coconut Fritters, theyre like the hawaiian malasadas. They have a really big menu, its not like the Hawaiian BBQ places in LA. And theyre open til MIDNIGHT everyday! Well definitely come back and try their BBQ. It is, however, not native to Hawaii. It is native to tropical and subtropical America. The flowers are found in colors of white, yellow, pink, red, and multiple pastels. In Hawaii one of the best places to view plumeria is at the Koko Crater Botanical Garden - a 60-acre basin inside Koko Crater on the eastern end of the island of Oahu. As reported in Monday's Maui News, state and federal agencies are posting new warning signs at harbors and boat ramps in Hawaii. They are doing this out of fear that more boating traffic increases the potential for collisions with humpback whales during the winter whale season. The Maui Swap meet is held on South Puunene Ave. next to the Kahului Post Office. It's a top notch resort with a great staff and is certainly not hurt by its prime location at at the north end of Kaanapali Beach near Pu'u Keka'a, the famous Black Rock where the beach is the widest and the swimming and snorkeling are superb. This location gives Sheraton guests a unique sense of privacy. You never feel that you are nestled into an area with many other condominiums, hotels and resorts. Pictured are five of them: apple-banana, mango, the ubiquitous passionfruit or liliko’i (those things are everywhere, and thank goodness for that), pineapple, and something that may or may not be papaya. Anyone know what color papaya is, or whether it resembles spam from a distance? Another of the local delicies is a seaweed called ogo or limu loa, depending on whether you’re from Japan on Hawaii respectively, or, failing that, on the nationality of the elderperson who answered your question, “what is that gunk you’re scraping off the beach every morning?” Our hosts had a half-dozen different recipes for ogo, also collected on the beach in the morning (delivered in a half-dozen different Polynesian accents), including various combinations of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, tomatoes, onion, etc. We tried two of them and I regret not staying longer, or getting up earlier in the day to harvest more.
