Hawaiian Quilting - LoveToKnow Crafts Log in Hawaiian Quilting From LoveToKnow Crafts Hawaiian quilting is a distinctive art form using brightly colored fabrics and elaborate stitching. They often incorporate images of indigenous flowers and plants, and are truly stunning masterpieces of fabric and thread. "/wiki/Image:Callalilypillow200.jpg" class="image" title="Hawaiian Quilt" Table of contents 1 History of Hawaiian quilts 2 Hawaiian sensibility in quilting 3 Making your own Hawaiian quilt 4 Related articles "/w/index.php?title=Hawaiian_Quilting&action=edit&section=1" title="Hawaiian Quilting" History of Hawaiian quilts According to ( http://www.quiltshawaii.com/tradition.html ) , quilts evolved as an art form in Hawaii rather than a necessity, because the climate is mild. Hawaiian quilting really is different from other types of quilting in three basic ways: Whole pieces of cloth are used for the designs, instead of pieces like other quilts. Only two colors of fabric are used. The motif is cut using the “snowflake” method. The design motif is echoed in the quilting. Missionaries to the islands introduced quilting to the native women. Because they didn’t have scraps of fabric lying around (since indigenous clothing often consisted of wraps made of whole cloth) they developed their own methods of quilt design. Missionaries also influenced the way Hawaiian quilts are cut. The design part of the quilt is cut out in the same way that a child would make a paper snowflake. The fabric is folded several times and cut along the edge, ensuring that all sides of the design are symmetrical. "/w/index.php?title=Hawaiian_Quilting&action=edit&section=2" title="Hawaiian Quilting" Hawaiian sensibility in quilting In addition to having a different reason to make quilts, Hawaiians also tend to have a different attitude about making quilts. Not merely a utilitarian item, Hawaiian quilts reflect the beauty of the world around the quilters. A beautiful, well-balanced design was considered a gift, and the spirit of the person who made the quilt was said to live on in her work. Thus quilts were often destroyed when the quiltmaker died so her soul could be at peace. Because of this, and the salty, humid environment of the islands, many old Hawaiian quilts are no longer in existence. Those quilts that still exist often are kept within a family and not often seen by outsiders. It is a recent occurrence that Hawaiian quilting has been openly taught and shared. "/w/index.php?title=Hawaiian_Quilting&action=edit&section=3" title="Hawaiian Quilting" Making your own Hawaiian quilt If you don’t have the luxury of going to Hawaii and taking a quilting class from a master at the craft, don’t worry. You can find a treasure trove of information about the craft on the Internet. Here are some good resources. ( http://www.quiltshawaii.com/howtosub.html ) has a good tutorial and video about Hawaiian quilting. ( http://www.nvo.com/poakalani/files/ ) has instructions for Hawaiian quilts, as well as tips, hints and instructions for cutting out your pattern. If you’re ever in Honolulu, this is the place to take quilting classes or see a demonstration, as well. ( http://members.tripod.com/~Honu_Hale/ ) has a lengthy tutorial on Hawaiian quilting, and includes patterns that you can buy. ( http://www.quilthawaiian.com/hawaiianquilting.htm ) offers all sorts of tips and instructions on Hawaiian quilting, including such good information as how to avoid fraying when working on your appliqué. Hawaiian quilts are like a living art form. Each quilt is unique and carries the spirit and emotions of the person who designed and made the quilt. The spirit of generosity and attitude toward life found in Hawaiian quilts and their quilters is something that quilters everywhere and in every style can adapt to their own quilting projects. Remember to quilt with your heart, and put something of yourself into every project you do, and you will be quilting in Hawaiian spirit, if not Hawaiian style. As our #1 concern is to get you a place to stay on Maui. Few places on earth are as blessed as Maui, Hawaii, a tropical island of legendary beauty and rich history. Even within the Hawaiian islands it's referred to as "Maui No Ka Oi" or Maui is the best. As a complement to its ideal climate, Maui has a variety of spectacular natural wonders. World-famous beaches, lush Iao Valley, Haleakala volcano, Molokini crater-island, pastoral Upcountry, the tropical Hana coast and Seven Pools are just a few of the fascinating sights. The sports enthusiast will find great opportunities for championship golf, tennis, windsurfing, surfing, scuba, snorkeling, biking, hiking, and deep sea fishing. Other popular activities include shopping in the old whaling port of Lahaina, whale watching and dining in Maui's many fine restaurants. You might say it just doesn't get any better than this! Did you know Ka'anapali was selected as the nation's best beach? Having a resort as its backdrop didn't stop Dr. Beach from choosing Ka'anapali as the best beach in the nation, the ninth time a Hawai'i strand has won that honor. Dr. Beach, coastal expert Stephen Leatherman, chose Po'ipu Beach on Kaua'i two years ago, and like Po'ipu, Maui's Ka'anapali is a resort beach. Leatherman doesn't mind some hotels, as long as the beach itself isn't too crowded by them. Folks at the Ka'anapali hotels said they're pleased, but not surprised at the designation. "The connectivity down from Black Rock all the way to Canoe Beach, softsand, a wide beach, both tranquil water for snorkeling and surf for surfing andboogie boarding — we think that it's one of the great beaches," saidBarry Lewin, general manager of the Hyatt Regency Maui Resort and Spa, whichanchors the southern end of the beach. When Dr. Beach, a meteorologist and professor at Florida International University in Miami, selects a shoreline as his favorite for the year, it's taken out of the running permanently, but Hawai'i does not appear to be running short. Three other Hawaiian beaches made it into Leatherman's top 10 this year: Hanalei on Kaua'i, Makalawena on Hawai'i and Hanauma on O'ahu. Previous Hawai'i winners were Po'ipu in 2001, Mauna Kea Beach in 2000, Wailea in 1999, Kailua Beach in 1998, Hulopo'e in 1997, Lanikai in 1996, Hapuna in 1993 and Kapalua in 1991. Coming Soon Aqua BAMBOO HOTEL, Waikiki The Aqua Bamboo Hotel is recently renovated from the former Marc Hotel . The address is 2425 Kuhio Ave ., local telephone 808-922-7777 . The Bamboo's lobby [with large plasma screen TV] and pool area are very lovely, and in our room there are a lot of great features, including custom designed furniture, crown moldings, quality carpet, glass brick shower stall, a double sink curved vanity, slatted wood bathroom ceiling. With an "official" summer rate of $145 for the VERY spacious room [ significantly cheaper on the internet ], it includes a kitchenette without a microwave, a sitting area with TV, sofa and desk, a separate bedroom that is behind a louvered wood shutter wall, three sliding glass doors for great ventilation, a lanai, and the room is located high enough above the street not to be too noisy. The problems here were just cosmetic, but I filled out an opinion form my third day, and the problems were fixed, so high marks go to the Bamboo for quick response. The rooms are a very good value, tastefully decorated in a kind of Metropolitan Home magazine sort of modern Asian theme, and for my needs [computer, photo equipment, paperwork, my need to cook], just about perfect. Many people wonder if they'll "need" to rent a car on Oahu. Even though TheBus circles the island for a ridiculously low fare, you won't have access to all the side roads and back roads along the way. The cost of renting a car is so low, especially considering all the money you've already spent to get here, it makes no sense to not rent a car for at least a day. That's why we call our guides Driving & Discovering Hawaii books! Our Circle Island Driving Map shows you those places and features that we feel should not be missed if you only have one day to explore... although there are actually many more choices than what we have included here.
