Although it has its share of tourist traps, Waikiki also has an expansive park, a popular hike, fabulous restaurants and nightlife, and even a large zoo and aquarium. Still, many kamaaina (natives) will tell you that your Oahu adventure really begins once you venture outside Waikiki. Honolulu ("sheltered bay"), Hawaiis capital and largest city, is where youll find the states principal port, major airport, and business and financial center. From herbal remedies in Chinatown and historical artifacts at the Bishop Museum to paying homage to our war heroes at the U.S.S. Arizona Memorial , there is much to do and see in Honolulu . For a taste of Oahu at its rugged best, head to the North Shore , a 20-mile stretch of coastline from Kaena Point to Turtle Bay. Stroll through the funky town of Haleiwa and its colorful assortment of surf shops, boutiques, art galleries and eateries. A favorite stop here is Matsumotos Shave Ice, a venerable landmark that serves the icy treat in a glorious rainbow of flavors. Each winter, the North Shore becomes the center of the surfing universe, with up to 25-foot waves challenging the sports best and bravest. Heading east, pristine Hanauma Bay remains one of the states most popular and widely photographed attractions. HCV is located in Honolulu at the University of Hawaii at Manoa (which is ~200 miles from Hawaii Island, where the active Hawaiian volcanoes are situated). HCV member Institutions on the island of Hawaii are the University of Hawaii at Hilo and the USGS Hawaii Volcano Observatory ( HVO ).At the present time, HCV does not directly offer internships or take volunteers for research experience atthe active volcanoes. However, the USGS/HVO does have a volunteer program. The Pu`u `O`o eruption of Kilauea volcano celebrated it's 23rd Birthday on 3 Jan 2006. This site launched on on 11 June 1995 and had its 1,000,000th visitor in 2000 What's in a name? For those of you who were wondering, "Volcanology" involves the study of volcanoes and volcanic activity, such as at Kilauea volcano in Hawaii, which is depicted above.
