MeatHenge: Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches « Holidays over, Farmer's Market back, Fatted Calf returns! | Main | World's Best BBQ Grills - Denver Colorado » Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches Posted by Biggles on January 06, 2005 This semi-new local restaurant, Wailiki Hawaiian BBQ, has sparked easily the most heated discussion amoung our immediate circle of friends & family. Apparently my sister and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Meathead visited this place a month ago and were served nearly inedible food. The food I received was worth returning to. My co-worker EarAche wasn't impressed with the one in Hercules, the L&L Hawaiian BBQ . Why do these two restaurants have identical menus? Why are there no vegetables? Except for the strands of cabbage under the fried food? I've never been to Hawaii and it took a few days to sort things out. For those of you concerned, it's called Plate Lunch. No matter what the restaurant's name is, it's called Plate Lunch. You expect a scoop of rice or two and a scoop of macky salad. After that it's up to you how it gets filled. Amound the top seller is the Chicken Katsu, a flatted chicken patty that's breaded then deep fried. This was quite tasty and I had absolutely no problem eating it. But remember, if you order the regular meal you're getting enough food for two VERY hungry people. There's a mini version available, I would highly suggest you start there. And I mean it. I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs and the regular was clearly too much, even to stuff myself silly. All for $5.50 (sans the soda). My sister ordered the BBQ Short Ribs and ended up leaving most if not all of it on the table. I can understand that, Beef Short Ribs are a fatty faire and if not cooked really long and really slow can be highly nasty to injest, or not as the case may be. Mr. Meathead ordered the Deep Fried Shrimp Regular meal. Again, not a happy camper and left it all there for the waitress to dispose of. I can understand it, most breaded shrimp meals are small shrimp with some breaded coating that ends up being most of your meal. This is no good, which is why I don't order the breaded deep fried shrimp when I attend these eateries. Just something to take note of for the future, eh? The Loco Moco sounds interesting, I may try it in the future or make it at home. It's a homemade hamburger steak & egg with gravy, interesting. Another possibility might be the Saimin (noodle soup) or one of their breakfasts, Spam with Eggs & Rice. Hey man, don't laugh. The Hawaiians consume the greatest amounts of spam, it can be just fine when done correctly. Do you want to try the Spam Musubi? I dunno. I ordered the Mahi Mahi Plate Lunch today, it was 'okay'. But I wouldn't order it again. Big D says that is just pre-battered fish from a bag. I agree. That was a large Nope. Probably be even a larger something else later on. Big D ordered the Teriyaki Plate Lunch. He says, "It wasn't really bad, it wasn't really good." Okay, I'll buy that. But keep in mind, he's been to Hawaii many times and has homemade teriyaki sauce made special. He knows the full spectrum of how good it can get. As of today the way to go would be either the Chicken Katsu Lunch Plate or the Kalua Pork Lunch Plate (a daily special). The Kalua Pork is a smoked pulled pork meat plate with a light sauce of some kind, almost can't tell it's on there. I'd eat it every day it's so good. No fat or craziness going on, just full on pulled pork that smells as good as it tastes. Kersmakyumbo. To sum it all up, these Hawaiian Plate Lunch eateries can be a mixed bag of goodies. Pay attention to what you're ordering and remember to go home and eat a salad right away. Ask around too, since they are all not of the same franchise you could very well run across a real gem such as Zippy's based in the Hawaiian Islands (Thank you Big D for the tip). SoCal has seen a lot of Hawaiian restaurants open up in the last year or 2, too. Spam Musubi is best made fresh, like you see at potlucks, not wrapped in plastic like L&L sells theirs. Only my teenage son (aka "The Bottomless Pit") will order it on occasion for a quick bite. He usually gets the Loco Moco with just rice cuz he doesn't like the mac salad. I usually get the BBQ plate and have the rest to nuke at work the next day. Hubby and I both like the Chicken Katsu or BBQ Chicken at these places. Where do you work that you can fry up some chicken??? I wanna work there! Best I could do at my work was share the calories over the holidays with my cookies, candy and homemade Sweet Chex Mix. So, it takes me a while to find new restaurants and to see what's been going on around me. Turns out I'm usually a year or two behind. It's something I've learned to deal with over the years. I keep myself busy fying chicken at work! Uh yeah, this is a pretty low-key place to work. Plus I've been here a long long time, nearly 15 years. So, if I want to fry chicken for everyone, they let me. I have electric skillets, toasters and other things here as well. I haven't done much cooking here lately, but I used to make breakfasts for everyone. You know, eggs, toast, bacon and/or ham steak. I also used to have a charcoal fired grill here, took it home though. Boy, having a huge pile of freshly grilled meatses sure is nice to have during the week at lunch. I think I stopped doing it because it isn't really convenient. Cleaning up is tough, plus I have to answer the phone from time to time. From Lanai's only town, I had driven half an hour north on a single-lane dirt road to this otherworldly plateau of red dust, pinnacles, and encrusted lava. I turned off the engine of the jeep but left the radio blaring rock from a Big Island station. Walking away from the car—at just the point where the trade winds began to drown out the electric guitar—I felt suddenly and deliriously alone. Like many city dwellers, I fantasize about being stranded on a Pacific island. I read Robinson Crusoe as a kid and saw Cast Away the day it opened, but I'd never experienced the exquisite ache of loneliness that a shipwreck survivor might feel until that moment, standing at the northern edge of Lanai and looking out at the darkening ocean. Of course, this was an illusion. When I turned around, my jeep was there, with the Stone Temple Pilots singing an anthem to modern-day alienation. But all was not lost: I was still on Lanai. Shaped like a teardrop, 18 miles long, and only 13 miles across at its widest point, Lanai has retained a sense of splendid seclusion. No theme-park resorts here. In fact, since the island was once used for growing pineapples and cattle ranching—and 98 percent of it is owned by a single real estate holding—development has been kept to a minimum. Lanai City, with a population of just 3,000, is tightly contained in less than four square miles and still looks like the 1920s pineapple-plantation village it used to be. About half of the island's coast is sheer cliff against ocean, and most of the land is arid—red dirt and low grass. There are less than three dozen miles of paved road, not a single mile of which runs along the coastline; nearly all shore access is by jeep trail, hiking, or rappelling. From almost any place on the island, I had to walk only 15 minutes and I could be deep in my thousands-of-miles-from-civilization reverie. The illusion of utter isolation is a delicacy, but like ordering blowfish at a sushi bar, it's one you want carefully served with the poison excised. Which is to say that the thrill of feeling stranded can sometimes lead to restlessness if you don't have an ultra-luxe hotel to head back to at the end of the day. Fortunately, Lanai has two such retreats. The low, Mediterranean-style buildings of the Manele Bay Hotel are terraced into a hillside next to the island's nicest strand, Hulopoe Beach. The most decadent suites—outfitted with four-poster beds—come with butler service, so I wasn't surprised to learn that, back in the early nineties, Bill Gates had rented the entire place for his wedding. Ten miles away, close to town, the Lodge at Koele, with its old-world hunting-estate decor, is an oddity in Hawaii. Because it's situated at 1,700 feet in the island's center, breezes are often cool enough to warrant use of the lobby's wood-burning fireplace. Both resorts have golf courses that are so well manicured and cleverly designed, with ocean backdrops and island greens, that they look like the virtual landscapes in a golf video game. What I like best about Lanai is that it manages a perfect balance between what there is to do and what there isn't. Sure, you can hook up with scuba and fishing charters, sample world-class snorkeling off Shipwreck Beach (so named because a World War II Liberty Ship rusts on the reef), sea-kayak with pods of spinner dolphins in Kaunolu Bay, mountain-bike down the Munro Trail, and ride horses above Maunalei Gulch. But karaoke nightclubs and beachfront bacchanalias? If you use party as a verb, this is not your island. In the end, your choices come down to a happily manageable handful: Should I play croquet or visit the sporting-clay facility to blow some plates out of the sky? Should I take a jeep down that dirt road or rent a mountain bike and go exploring? Should I get the alii banana-and-coconut scrub or the ki pola hoolu ti leaf wrap? Still want more? Its spacious rooms open onto garden courtyards or overlook Hulopoe Beach, the island's best. The largest wooden structure in the islands, it's modeled after old English hunting lodges, with a full croquet course and pros to teach you the game. Built by pineapple king James Dole in 1923 to house his execs, the plantation-style rooms have a warm charm. Eat there two days in a row and you're likely to see the same friendly faces. 808-565-6363 » Henry Clay's Rotisserie, in the Hotel Lanai, serves hearty New Orleans fare at moderate prices. The small bar here is one of the few places where locals and visitors mingle. 877-665-2624 Get Out: Trilogy Ocean Sports Lanai is the catchall guiding service on the island. It leads catamaran-supported scuba dives to the walls and reefs below Lanai's rocky shores, rents jeeps to explore the island's mostly dirt roads, and arranges guided four-wheel-drive expeditions if you don't want to go it alone. There is one notable exception: Hulopoe Beach, at the south end of Route 440, is not only car-accessible; it's continually rated as one of the most beautiful beaches in the world. HAWAIIAN MUSIC LYRICS -- LIST OF LINKS HAWAIIAN MUSIC LYRICS -- WEBSITES MELE.COM does not provide lyrics all requests will be directed to this page, with links to sites/businesses which provide lyrics (some also provide translation and chords) The first place to look for lyrics, is in the liner notes of every CD which includes the song (to find recordings of a specific song, click "Search" on the MELE.COM front page, and follow instructions given) Pa'a ka waha, nana ka maka; hana ka lima. Shut the mouth; observe with the eyes; work with the hands. (One learns by listening, observing and doing.) This was the traditional method for learning Hawaiian songs, as one sat near a musician as s/he played. Songs and tunings were passed down through generations of families -- from kupuna (elder) to keiki (child). Hawaiian songs were rarely (if ever) put in writing, not even the lyrics. Very few musicians in Hawai`i could read music, so this was how the songs were perpetuated. Even today, many of the "top" musicians in Hawai`i do not read sheet music...they learn the old way, or from listening to a particular song over and over (on tape or CD) and playing along until they feel ready to play the song in public. Hawaiian music fans outside the islands -- in their eagerness to learn the lyrics and translations of their favorite songs -- are often dismayed to find that they may, too, have to learn "the old way".
