During the hurricane season, a Tropical Weather Outlook is issued four times a day. Look for the next Tropical Weather Outlook June 1. Although the greatest liklihood for hurricanes is during the hurricane season, CPHC continually monitors for the threat of tropical systems throughout the year. Western Pacific (West of 180) Monitored by the: Joint Typhoon Warning Center Japan Meteorological Agency Eastern Pacific (East of 140W) The Eastern Pacific Hurricane season runs from May 15 to November 30. Monitored by the NHC Atlantic There are no tropical cyclones at this time. The season officially begins on June 1 and ends on November 30. However, tropical cyclones can occur at any time. The National Weather Service Forecast Office in Honolulu activates the CPHC when: (1) a tropical cyclone moves into the Central Pacific from the Eastern Pacific, (2) a tropical cyclone forms in the Central Pacific, or (3) a tropical cyclone moves into the Central Pacific from the West. I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them. Full Review Hawaiian Walk In 402 15th Street Oakland CA 94612 During the week - 10:30 AM - 9:00 PM weekends - 11:00 AM - 7:00 PM Ever since Aloha Fest at Presidio Park this past summer, I have been fixated with plate lunches, malasadas, and SPAM. Ideally, SPAM in my plate lunch somewhere, but defnitely not in my malasada. Imagine then, how excited I was to discover that Hawaiian Walk In - a place that cooks up plate lunches - was located less than five miles from my apartment. Awooo! Then, imagine just how disappointed I was after finding out the food was just under so-so. That's just how it happened. Location It's in downtown Oakland, a stone's throw from Broadway. You really wouldn't be doing anyting in downtown Oakland unless you work there or are going to Temple Tattoo, so there aren't too many accidental walk ins at Hawaiian Walk In. There is no parking lot either, so you'll probably have to spend some time looking for metered street parking. The best time to try this place out is after work hours or on weekends. Of course, the closest BART station is City Center. The Scene It's downtown Oakland - not in the hip part - not that there is a hip part. There's one woman who is the hostess, waitress, and cashier and she'll happily hand you a pink paper photocopied menu and hang out by the cash register up front. Behind her post is a fridge, the kind you can see in, where you'll find a jumble of Hawaiian Sun juices and sodas. This place is ridiculously casual, and almost has a dive, hole-in-the-wall charm to it. Menu Lots of island-style plates at ridiculoulsy low, low prices. The food is better to talk and read about than eat. Specials include things like a Teriyaki Mixed plate (think of it was a three way plate - teri short ribs, teri chicken, and teri steak), Loco Moco (a hamburger patty and fried egg smothered in gravy atop a mound of rice), Pork Lau Lau, or a Bento lunch of Mahi Mahi, teri steak, teri chicken and ham. All Specials come with two scoops of rice and a scoop of mac salad, just like all Hawaiian plate lunches. Specials are around $5 and each plate is plenty. The monster special, which is a ridiculous amount of food, is the Mahalo Chicken Combo - Teri chicken, Lemon chicken and Chicken katsu with rice and mac salad. It was more than enough for two starving adults. There are also "regular" plates, which include one meat choice with the same sides - other things like lemon chicken, deep fried shrimp and curry are available. ($5-$6). For lighter eaters, or if $5 is too expensive, opt for a "mini" plate wich is the same as regular, but you just get one scoop of rice instead of two. No mini plate is over $4. Need to go cheaper? Get a sandwich - teri chicken, mahi mahi or teri beef - less than $2.50. Yup. $2.50. Now you're thinking that this is plate lunch nirvana with its jumbo portions and mega low prices. Nope. The food isn't that great. The chicken breasts for every chicken item we ordered was way too fatty with mystery, chewy bits. (I've eaten here a handful of times now.) The teriyaki flavor is actually pretty good - a full sweet taste - but no amount of marinade and sauce can mask poor quality chicken. The lemon chicken is a heavy overly battered and deep fried breast - the batter is so thick and bready, kind of like corndog batter without the cornmeal, which becomes a pocket sponge for what it was deep fried in. The lemon sauce - sugary, lemony, sad. The mac salad, which for many is what makes or breaks a plate lunch, is actually pretty good. But, cannot stand for the plate lunch. They also have saimin - but I can't recommend it either way because I haven't tried it yet. ($4 with egg and chicken, $2.25 plain!) I'm such a fan of island food that I'll probably go back to try the saimin. The Verdict I was disappointed, but it doesn't mean I won't go back. I really should learn my lesson. The prices are low, and there are enough things on the menu for several visits. This place though, is better and more authentic than the new place in El Cerrito (Waikiki something.) However, if you work in downtown Oakland anyway, and are short a few bucks...
