These shores are sheltered from the prevailing northeast Tradewinds; the warm sun is predictable, the waters calm, the rains infrequent, the sunsets sublime; and the outlying Islands - Moloka'i, Lana'i, and Kaho'olawe - give scenic depth to the horizon. While Kapalua Resort is rife with golf courses, tennis clubs, luxury hotels, bed & Breakfasts and Condominiums, Front Street in historic Lahaina Town still retains much of the charm of the old whaling days. Condominiums Homes and more!!! VISIT US Be sure to visit the Lahaina Restoration Foundation offices for a self-guided walking tour of 31 designated historic sites. Beaches & Parks Launiupoko Wayside Park - Located about three miles south of Lahaina Town, right off Honoapiilani Hwy. you'll find this little spot. HANAKA'O'O Beach Park - Located between Wahikuli State Wayside Park and the Hyatt Regency Maui. The Beach fronting the park is the beginning of the long stretch of sand that runs for a mile to PU'U KEKA'A or Black Rock in the center of Ka'anapali. Facilities in the park include picnic pavillions, restrooms, showers, paved parking, and canoe storage sheds for the OUTRIGGER CANOE CLUBS who use the park as a practice site. The Reatta season runs from May to October, you'll want to visit the park any saturday during this period. Puamana State Wayside Park - Just 2 miles south of Lahaina, right off Honoapiilani Highway you'll find this quaint beachside park. Puamana offers awesome views, shade, and nice surfing during the summer months. Good for picnics, snorkeling, and just plain relaxing. On Puunoa Place turn left, and continue down to the beach. Wahikuli Wayside Park - This narrow area of sandy shoreline sits between Lahaina and Kaanapali. Though often crowded, it is quite beautiful. Lana'i, Hawaii LANA'I The Secluded Island Hawaii's sixthlargest island, Lana'i is sparsely populated with miles of pristine beaches, only thirtymiles of paved roads and not a single traffic light. A secluded island, it covers 141square miles that range in elevation from sea level to more than 3,400 feet. The lowlandsare fringed with beaches and rugged sea cliffs, while the highlands were a mosaic ofmeadows and woodlands, laced with rainbows and mountain mists. Once carpetedwith acre upon acre of pineapples, today it is the newest and most secluded resort in thearchipelago. Under the stewardship of land owner Lana'i Company, Hawaii's secluded islandnow offers visitors a complete island adventure from a rival at tiny Lana'i airport to thewarm hospitality of Lana'i 3,000 permanent residents. Lana'i boaststop rated golf courses. The 18 hole championship experience at Koele designed by golf guruGreg Norman and architect Ted Robinson will provide the ultimate challenge with views tofour other islands. The Challenge at Manele Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus has beenfashioned from more than 70 acres of natural lava fields around protected archaeologicalpreserves and provides dramatic ocean side views. Don't miss avisit to Lana'i's only town, tiny Lana'i city built by Dole pineapple interest in 1924.Surrounding a village green-filled with towering Norfolk Island pines, it is like steppingback a century into a plantation community. A small but fascinating museum houses localtreasures and provide an insight into Lana'i's history. There are excellent opportunitiesfor adventure and visitors are free to enjoy the run of this tropical island made possibleby Lana'i Company, which still owns 98% of the island. There are fourwheel drive routes in the high forest through thick strands of eucalyptus and NorfolkIsland pines, hiking, horse riding, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkelling. You can strollthe beach where the only foot prints are yours, explore sites where the ancient Hawaiiansworked the land and fished the sea, or visit former pineapple fields which are now organicgardens supplying fresh fruit and vegetables. The natureconservancy stewards 598 acres set aside to preserve native plants in the hope ofunravelling some of the mysterious of Hawaiian evolution. From Shipwreck Beach on Lana'i'snorthern coast, you can see the rusting hulk of a World War 2 ship marooned on thetreacherous offshore reefs. One of Hawaii's best preserved Petroglyph sites is easilyaccessible by a short trail nearby. What makesLana'i unique is its sense of remoteness, seclusion and privacy. Hawaiian quilting festival this

Kojima, Star-Bulletin Lee Wild shows a pattern by the late master quilter, Meali'i Kalama. Below, a quilt on display this weekend. Stitches in Time One of the goals of the Hawaiian quilting festival this weekend is to perpetuate the cultural art form By Catherine Kekoa Enomoto Star-Bulletin IT'S a quilting bee to beat the band. This weekend's inaugural Hawaiian Quilt Festival at Blaisdell Center offers a patchwork of activities. Displays, exhibits, demonstrations, lectures, workshops, a marketplace and hands-on practice cover each step in the quilting process - pattern tracing, cutting, laying out, pinning, basting, hemming or appliqueing, and quilting. "We'll have old quilt patterns and dressmaker's tracing paper for purchase at $2 for a two-yard sheet," said Augusta-Helen "Aunty Gussie" Bento, president of the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project and co-chair of the three-day festival. "It's enough to trace one large quilt design and a couple of small designs. The patterns themselves stretch out to 40 or 48 inches." Bento said different quilt patterns will be available Saturday and Sunday, plus pencils for general use. "Then, people will be able to quilt on a horse that's there for community quilting," she said. Oahu and neighbor island quilters will lead workshops, such as stencils, Hawaiian tropical placemats, Hawaiian quilt pillow, miniature Hawaiian quilt, and designing a Hawaiian quilt. Cost will range from $26.50 to $75. Co-chair Elaine Zinn said festival goals are three-fold - "to help the public understand what the Hawaiian Quilt Research Project is about, to perpetuate the art of Hawaiian quilting so that it continues to grow, and to let people know how to take care of their quilts, because our environment and insects are so threatening to textiles." The 16-year Research Project has documented and registered more than 900 quilts and 700 quilt patterns on all islands. People will be able to sign up at the festival for future registries. "The project is important to preserve the history of Hawaiian quilts," said Zinn, who produced the 13-part public television "Hawaiian Quilting" series, "and to preserve the actual quilts that are still with us, so they will last a few more generations. They are very precious." "It was the greatest show of friendship to share one's quilt patterns," said Elizabeth Akana, who can conjure a genteel picture of tutu (grandmothers) with flowers in their hair, gathered on a porch to share snitches of gossip and stitches of colorful threads. "The quilts are enlightening us about our history and bringing about a love of history, because when you're dealing with a quilt you've got to have love in your heart," Akana said. Meanwhile, people can take their own paper and pencil, and trace quilt patterns at Waianae Library, which has a prodigious collection of 400 patterns, with more patterns yet available at Kailua Library and Brigham Young University-Hawaii collections. Akana said of Hawaii's unique quilting process and product: "We're looking at love in fabric and thread." Historical threads Event: Hawaiian Quilt Festival Place: Blaisdell Center Times: "Preview" 5:30 to 9 p.m. Friday, festival 9a.m. to 9 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday Admission: $15 for Friday preview; $5 Saturday and Sunday; $20 special festival package.
