It was originally named Laeahi by the ancient Hawaiians. The name meant "brow of the tuna" and looking at the silhouette of the crater from Waikiki, you can see the resemblance. The current name came was given to the crater by British sailors in the 1800's. When they first saw the crater at a great distance, the calcite crystals in the lava rock appeared to glimmer in the sunlight. The sailors mistakenly thought there must be diamonds in the soil. Diamond Head is a crater that has been extinct for 150,000 years. The crater is 3,520 feet in diameter with a 760-foot summit. When the United States annexed Hawaii in 1898, harbor defense became a main responsibility. One of the major defense forts, Fort Ruger, occupied the Diamond Head Crater. A battery of canons was located within the crater providing complete concealment and protection from invading enemies. An observation deck was constructed at the summit in 1910 to provide target sighting and a four level underground complex was built within the walls of the crater as a command post. A 580-foot tunnel was dug through the crater wall to provide easier access to the Fort. The observation deck and underground complex is now abandoned with the advent of radar but evidence of the command post is still present along Diamond Head Trail. The trail is paved almost the entire way but can be steep in spots. There are two sets of stairs, one with 99 steps and the other, 76 steps. There is also a 225-foot unlit tunnel. The hike is classified as easy to moderate in exertion but is certainly worth the breathtaking, unparalleled view of the entire west side of the island, from Waikiki to Koki Head. Useful Information: Diamond Head Trail is 1 ¾ miles to the rim and takes about 1 ½ hours There is NO shade schedule an early hike Bring water and a flashlight (for the tunnel) Bathrooms available at the trailhead Age Required information Quantity Price Add to Itinerary Diamond Head Crater Adventure Adult or Child Date: * Request Time of Hike --- 6:00am Sunrise Tour 9:30am Laterise Tour * Names on Tickets (ex.John, David) * $20.00 Kauai | Oahu | Molokai | Lanai | Maui | Hawaii Home | Contact Us | View Itinerary | Island Maps | Brochures | Screensavers | Free Newsletter About Us | Site Map | Privacy Policy Call Us Toll Free at 1.866.268.7459 All content © 2003 HawaiiWeb, Inc. Brought to you by Cingular Cruise passengers now make up 3.5 percent of all visitors to the islands. Of them, 126,731 came by air to board cruise ships in Hawaii while 42,999 arrived on a cruise ship to tour the islands. So far this year, Hawaii has seen 92 cruise voyages, including 34 conducted on board Norwegian Cruise Line vessels. "Next year we are expecting more cruise visitors when Norwegian's Pride of America and Pride of Aloha homeport in Hawaii," said Marsha Wienert, the state's tourism liaison. Cruise-passenger onshore spending declined to $99 a day from $103.74 in the first nine months of 2002. The 4 percent drop is due primarily to lower spending by U.S. West and Canadian tourists. U.S. West tourists spent $86.63 per person this year compared to $98.68 for the corresponding 2002 period. Canadian visitors spent $96.21 ($102), U.S. East $106.90 ($106.12), and Europeans $96.14 ($96.13). There were 93,831 cruise passengers from the U.S. East Coast, down from 94,533 in 2002. Similarly, U.S. West passenger numbers declined by a few hundred. However, Canadian passenger numbers rose from 9,785 to 10,521, and Europeans grew from 3,056 to 4,216. More than 4,000 Hawaii residents cruised around the islands in the first nine months of this year, nearly 20 percent fewer than last year's figure of 4,996 people. Local cruise passengers spent $49 per person per day while on a cruise, about half of what nonresidents spend. Of the $49, they spent $15 on shore excursions, $11 on shopping and $5 on food and beverage. About those cruise visitors: Daily spending: $99. Stayed 1.71 days before cruise. » Continued Page: 1 | 2 Extra Best small biz markets We rate the largest metros for healthiest climate for entrepreneurs. » Find out more » 10 best metros for Small Business | » Rankings for 50 largest markets | » Startup Successes © 2003 American City Business Journals Inc. The sixth largest island, Lanai is completely volcanic in origin. Located in the center of the Hawaiian chain, it is most famous for the huge Dole Pineapple plantation. Lanai boasts one of Hawaii's most beautiful beaches at Hulopoe Bay. You can also see petroglyphs at Luhiwa, and explore the ruins of Kaunolu Village near the favorite fishing spot of King Kamehameha the Great. The island's name translates to "day of conquest," and its unusual beauty contrasts from vividly colorful and lush to forbiddingly stark and striking.
