Much of it is forested ... more Sparsely populated, with a handful of small towns, Molokai is a last surviving piece of the old rural Hawaii. It exists in a kind of time warp: no packaged Hawaiiana, no high-rises, and more farmers than tourists. It is home to a greater proportion of Hawaiian people than any of the main islands. FREE Newsletter. Sign Up Now! Grand Cruise Liner Saved from Scrap Yard - For Now Until its bankruptcy in late 2001, American Hawaii Cruises' classic U.S.-flag ocean liner, the S.S. Independence, sailed exclusively around the Hawaiian Islands 12 months of the year on weeklong cruises.
After the collapse of American Classic Voyages, the Independence sailed to the Alameda Naval Air Station. On March 5, 2002, her mast hit the Carquinez Bridge while being towed by four tugs. The Independence was on her way to Suisan Bay, but was taken back to Pier 50 in San Francisco for repairs. The Independence was subsequently moored in April 2002 with the Suisun Reserve Fleet in Suisan Bay, California near the USS Iowa. In February 2003, the Independence was sold at auction for $4 million to Norwegian Cruise Line.
NCL hopes to add the Independence to its U.S.-flagged fleet. Norwegian will begin sailing its U.S.-flagged ships in Hawaii in 2004.
The Independence was originally launched during the heyday of ocean travel in 1950, but was treated to more than $78 million in refurbishments from 1994 to 2001. The ship is one of the few major cruise ships built in the United States, having been constructed at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts for American Export Lines of New York. It was intended for use as a trans-Atlantic passenger liner--yet, it adhered to post-World War II U.S. Navy specifications to permit rapid conversion into a troop ship, with a capacity for 5,000 men and their equipment. The vessel, as originally designed, was made entirely of non-combustible or fire-resistant materials and featured extra hull plating--and two engine rooms so that if one were damaged, the other could keep the ship moving at a relatively high speed.
Everyone who loves old ocean liners can hope that NCL will be able to add the Independence to its fleet and save her from the scrap yard. Lahaina Luau, you can
Royal Lahaina Luau Royal Lahaina Luau Royal Lahaina Resort Luau, Oceanside along Kaanapali Beach Youre in Hawaii of course you want to go to a Luau! The luau tradition seems as old as the islands themselves, and is something every Hawaiian visitor needs to experience. In fact, when you get home, one of the first things your friends will ask you is if you attended a luau. And if you attended the Royal Lahaina Luau, you can boast that youve been to the best Luau on Maui. Held Tuesday thru Saturday on the pleasant shores of Kaanapali Beach in Lahaina, the Royal Lahaina Luau is a treat for the eyes, ears, and appetite. Plus, the Royal Luau Lahaina has something for every member of the family, including a special kids buffet. The Luau Dinner Upon arrival, you'll be greeted with a traditional Hawaiian lei, a tasty bottomless Mai Tai from our open bar, and participate in traditional Hawaiian arts and crafts. Arrive early, and you will witness the Imu Ceremony, where we dig up the underground earth oven and reveal the succulent roast pork that is the centerpiece of our feast. Cooking underground is a Hawaiian tradition, and once you taste the food, youll be making plans to dig your own backyard earth oven. The all-you-can-eat buffet dinner that follows includes delicacies that will certainly please anyones taste. Both native and introduced foods are featured: there's poi, island pig, fresh island fish, roast turkey, island chicken, assorted salads, taro bread...the list goes on. Theres also a special childrens buffet line, featuring child-friendly dishes your kids will love. For dessert, be sure to try the haupia (our famous Hawaiian pudding). On with the Show Your sumptuous dinner is just the beginning. After your meal, you'll be mesmerized by the show-stopping performance we have planned. Included is the hula, the storytelling dance that lies at the center of Hawaiian oral traditions, as well as other performances from the annals of Polynesian tradition, including native musicians and fire-dances that will keep everyone wide-eyed the entire evening. Our Luau is simply second to none. But space fills up quickly in almost all cases, reservations must be made before your trip if you want to attend the best Luau on Maui.
