The land on which the Hotel is directly built was once the Ku'ekaunahi stream, which ran through the Queen's property. There were two summer homes on Lili'uokalani's property, one called Kealohilani and the other Paoakalani (literally translated as "heavenly fragrance"). Here she retreated to relax and informally entertain family, friends, and on occasion, visiting royalty. She also spent much of her time composing her songs and translating Hawaiian stories into English, surrounded by lily ponds and elaborate gardens, and when the trade winds blew, the fragrance of the topical flowers was carried throughout the estate. According to Queen Lili'uokalani, the large inviting living room was a place where "all could gather in joy and hospitality." Her home served as a comforting getaway from the pressures of business at I'olani Palace, several miles away. Nearby stood another one-story guest cottage, Kealohilani ("heavenly brightness"), where visitors enjoyed the tranquility of old Hawaii. In 1966, the Lili'uokalani Trust revealed plans for turning 16 acres of "old Waikiki" into a multi-million dollar resort development. American International Travel Services, Inc. (AITS) broke ground at this site in 1968 with plans for a twin towers, 23-story hotel at a cost of $12 million. Only one tower was initially completed. In October 1971, and at a cost of close to double the original estimate, the hotel officially opened. The grand opening ceremony took place on February 9-10, 1972. Reverend Abraham Akaka of the Kawaiahao Church conducted the blessing in the Garden Courtyard and Princess Abigail Kawananakoa, the niece of the late Queen Lili'uokalani, ceremoniously untied the maile lei. Eight years later, in 1979, the Kuhio Tower was added to the Resort, bringing the total room count to 1,346. In November 2000, Marriott International, Inc. assumed management of the hotel. Today, the area surrounding the resort bears little resemblance to the neighborhood at the turn of the century, but the traditions established by the queen continues to flourish at our resort. This is a problem in Wailea where you're more or less dependent on your hotel. When we first checked in we loved the view and the balcony, and the place was huge. However we got tired of having to pay resort prices, but still had to drive down the hill to find an open restaurant or bar, or even go to the beach. The Japanese-style baths were cold and not relaxing. I have been to hot spring baths in Japan, and that is an inviting and invigorating experience. This was not. There is also a normal pool and hot tub, but they are only open until 6 pm! There are three restaurants: two Japanese, and one Italian. The Japanese-French one is not really haute cuisine like they make it sound. That's probably why the restaurant is almost always completely empty. The Italian restaurant is a little more lively, and we enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor bar there, but it doesn't stay open late like other bars in Maui. We didn't visit the third, because it was always closed. The condo has a Japanese-style shower-room and separate toilet room. These could have been cleaner, or updated. The kitchen was very small with a mini electric stove and no oven, no microwave, no dishwasher, no dish drainer. And you had to rent a set of pots that didn't include much. The refrigerator was tiny and filled with frost, and froze all our food, so we didn't cook very much in the room. The king bed really is two twins pushed together. I couldn't believe it. The employees were very nice, though it's true that not many spoke English well enough to give you tourism advice or directions. I think that's a primary function of any hotel and shouldn't be overlooked. The grounds are well kept and the sunsets are a glorious sight from your balcony. It's very quiet with no children and I appreciated that. But as we visited other Wailea resorts throughout the week, and sat on their beaches with tropical drinks, and ate at fun restaurants, and watched people relax on loungers at the pool all day, I couldn't help but feel that was the Maui experience we had wanted to have, and the Diamond was just lacking. My advice is either to pay more for a true Wailea resort on the beach, or stay in a friendly condo in laid-back Kihei. The grounds are okay, but the grounds next to the rooms were unattended too and unpleasant to see. The bathroom shower needed to be cleaned (by myself) with a pot scruber. The need to rent kitchen materials was a major disppointment and let down. The microwave also had to be rented. Such items are standard in places where we have paid 125% less. The Japanese dinning was great on service, small on food and a bit too costly to us. The spa area was the highlight of the stay. The 'body shower' and 'waterfall' were just what the body ordered! The need to pay for gym sessions with a personal trainer were also a disappointment. On vacation, we generally want to work out at our leisure, not be subjected to unwarrented training sessions. After paying for an overprice room the additional charges for all of the other basic items made this a place that we will not return. Traveler rating: Maui: Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa : "Perfect Change of Pace" Sep 10, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Beltsville, MD Compare prices with: I just took the family (wife (44), son (22) and daughters (19,17)) to Maui for 3 nights and Waikiki for 5, so we opened our trip at the Diamond Resort, which is really in Wialea. This was the perfect change of pace resort after a long flight from the east coast. The free spa is tremendous and relaxing (I hit it every night and my 17 year old had a facial and massage that made her trip - $100), and the rooms (really suites) were so clean and spacious. The property is large measured by land but very small measured by number of rooms, so you really get great treatment by the staff buy can hide away by yourself for peace and quiet if that's what you want. My daughters went to the Japanese restaurant at the resort and said it was the best. They also have a renowned Italian restaurant there, but I didn't try it. My one criticism is the king bed really isn't a king but two beds together, and the pillows were not great. And here is a tip...if you're older and/or don't walk very well, make sure you tell them so they can put you in a room that is close to the main level. The property is dramatically placed on a hill, so the lower you are the closer you are to the ocean but the more you have to walk up and down the hill. My kids were in building 20 and we were in building 1, and there room was much better than ours in term of walking and panoramic view. Even with these quirks, I give The Diamond Resort 4.5 stars; I knew my wife and I would love the place when I booked it, but I was shocked at how much my children loved it too. The rooms are spacious and though we had a Garden View Room all rooms are ocean facing and we had a partial view of the ocean from the first floor. We enjoyed lovely sunsets from our location. The bed was MASSIVE and I loved the two white spa robes that were provided. And it was so cute that they provided a green tea set along with american coffee cups and coffeemaker. Whatever coffee or green tea we used was replenished daily by the maid service and our tea/coffee cups were cleaned by the service. It may be a minor inconvenience to rent cookware for $4 a day - but the cost is really nominal, and frankly who cooks all that much on vacation? The kitchen (more of a kitchenette) was really rather small to create a culinary masterpiece anyway - just 2 burners and a dorm size fridge. With all the spectacular restaurants in Maui we never ran out of options in 2 weeks. Also, I wanted to address some of the earlier reviewers' comments which are really misleading. First, while I will agree that this resort caters to a primarily Japanese clientele, I spoke with the front desk staff a few times, to have them change the time of our dinner reservation, ask general questions, and schedule spa appointments - there was no barrier in communication and things were handled as requested each time. In fact, the staff was mostly Hawaiian, so it is untrue that they only understand Japanese. Second, prior to our stay at Diamond it was very clear to me that the use of their fitness facilities are only for those who are using their personal trainers. I thought this limitation was unfortunate, but this is fairly clear. Their was no information in the brochure or the DR website to make you think otherwise. Aside from this, I just wanted to mention that the views were spectacular, I had a sublime facial at their spa - it lasted over an hour, we enjoyed feeding the koi that are in all the pools and waterfalls that are woven throughout the grounds (DR sells bags of food for just a $1), and their restaurant Capisché? ranks with the top restaurants in Maui for a reason - they have an extensive wine list, sophisticated menu and delicious food. The entire resort staff was very gracious and attentive to our needs during our stay. If you are looking for tranquility, privacy and amazing views, I would highly recommend this unique experience. And it is minutes from some of the best beaches and shopping in Maui. It is also one of the most economical places to stay in beautifully manicured landscape of Wailea. Thanks! The USGS Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) has identied each distinct phase of the Pu`u `O`o eruption with an episode number; For a summary ofprevious episodes, see our compilation .    This latest phase of eruptive activity at Kilauea volcano started unceremoniously on 24 Feb with the appearance of a small amount of molten lava deep within the Pu`u `O`o crater, visible only from above. Yet the ensuing 9 years have seen multiple spectactular periods of eruptive activity. The first couple of years of activity are detailed on our episode 55 page . PLEASE NOTE: HCV discontinued making detailed eruption updates in late 1999, once web capability was established at HVO. Synopsis of events    1997 through 1998 saw increased activity, a resumption of the ocean entry, lava bench formation and collapse (at the seashore), crater overflows and a general collapse of the large main crater cone bulit in priot episodes of the eruption.    1999 through 2001 saw continue eruptions from a crater flank vent, lava flows exiting the National Park on the East Flank and new ocean entries.    2002 and 2003 saw a shift of activity from the coast to upslope, with new surface flows and associated activity    2004 and 2005 saw resumption of vigorous ocean entries, including a new addition to the wester margin of the flow field. Activity upslope also continued, off and on, through the period. some more details    Episode 55 arrived after a 24 day-long hiatus in eruptive activity. This hiatus in turn followed a brief but spectacular fissure eruption (Episode 54) at Napau Crater in late January 1997. This last long hiatus had many volcano watchers presuming that the multi-year Pu`u `O`o eruption was finally Pau ( Pau in Hawaiian means over, or finished). This is because long hiatuses have not occurred duringthe last decade at Pu`u `O`o (the last long one was in mid-1986, when volcanism switched from episodic, 300-500m high, fire fountains of lava to continuous effusion).    Episode 55 has seen shifting vent locations on flanks of Pu`u `O`o cone and abuild up of the lava shield mostly on the south flank of the Pu`u `O`ocone. The lava pond within the Pu`u `O`o crater has intermittently risento produce flows on its east and west margins as well. The lava shield is the low bulge beneath the cone in the photo at the top ofthe page (taken on 26 May 1997).     Surface volcanic activity was extremely limited in the early days of Episode 55, occurring only deep within the Pu`u `O`o crater. On 28 March 1997, the lava level in the Pu`u `O`o crater rose and began feeding the subterreanean channels ("lava tubes") that fed small cones just south of the cone. Lava began erupting from several of these cones,enlarging the lava shield formed over the past 16 years.    In early July of 1997, lava began flowing down toward the coast, resulting in a resumption of ocean entry on July 12 near the eastern edge of the national park. This was the first time since January that surface flows at Kilaueareached the sea; prior to that, episode 55 had been restricted mostly tothe area around the Pu`u `O`o cone at elevations over 2000 feet. Between 29 July and 4 Aug the lava-sea entry had temporarily ceased, but restarted and on 11 Auga lava flow overran a 700 year-old Hawaiian temple ("Waha'ula heiau"), almost completely obscuring the ancient rock walled structure.Additionally, lava from within the Pu`u `O`o lava lake has risenhigh enough to have spilled out of the crater within the Pu`u `O`o cone and over the side at least twice in the past month.    Between early August and October 1997, the volcano experienced a number of lava overflowsfrom the Pu`u `O`o crater, which initiate with molten lava ponding inthe crater until it spills over the rim, issuing rivulets of lava to theeast and west of the crater. Although spectacular, these particular flows have yet to reach more than about 0.7 km from the crater. The lava that isfeeding the ocean entries issues from vents just outside of the Pu`u `O`ocone into lava tubes that run to the coast. These tubes experienceoccasional short-lived breakouts where lava flows on the surface. Otherwise,surface activity is typically very limited in locations away from the Pu`u `O`o vents. Both ocean entries have repeatedly formed lava benches, where new land is building out beyond the former seacliffs. Some or all of these unstable land masses have repeatedly collapsed into the sea. An example of whatthe benches looked like as of October 1997 is in the image to the left (outlined by white lines). Early in November 1997, one of the two lava benches suffered a large collapsed into the sea, taking some 4.75 acres of new landscape with it. Later, lava from the same tube system rebuilt a shelf at the foot of the cliffs formed during the collapse.Additional large collapses have occurred, such as on 15 January andbetween 16 and 19 February, 1998. This latest collapse illustrates that lavabenches form and then collapse at unpredictable intervals. HVO warns visitors that "these benches can collapse into the sea without warning, triggering steam explosions that hurl dense rock and molten spatter tens of meters inland. No one should venture onto the benches, no matter how stable the new land may appear." Additionally, the photos (to the right) are of the two activesea entries as they appeared in late March of 1998. Click on the images to view full size (photos by Ken Rubin)    In mid Jan 1998, there was a breif surge in activity at Kilauea, whereina lava intrusion caused rapid inflation of the summit, followed by defaltion.A summit eruption did not occur. Rather, the lava appeared to have enteredthe East Rift Zone and caused enhanced activity at the Pu`u `O`o vent (17 km to the east) and an increase in surface flow activity at pointsbetween Pu`u `O`o and the coast. The earthquakes and magma surge disrupted the steady-state pattern of activity that has characterized most of the past6 months of the eruption. This latest disruption subsided in (Feb. 1998) and the eruption is returned to a pattern more typical of previous months.    By Feb 1998 the eruption had settled into a routine of fairlysteady magma supply to the Pu`u `O`o crater and the sea entriesnear the coast. A number of additional bench collapses, brieferuption hiatuses and surface flow breakout episodes have also occurred,as well as a short period of enhance lava-lake activity at the craterin May 1998 that did not affect the overall effusion rate at the ocean entries.In early July, one of the two ocean entries that have been activefor most of Episode 55 (the Wah`aula entry) died but the other remained active.    1999 through 2001 saw continue eruptions from a crater flank vent. There was a brief hiatus in eruptive activity during a new intrusion of magma on the East Rift Zone, closer to the Kilauea caldera (Sept 1999) but activity resumed a week and a half later with spectacular surface flows, that made it to the sea by December of that year. Flows exited the park in early 2000 and for the next couple of years overran five abandoned houses in Royal Gardens subdivision (thus increasing to 189 the total number of structures destroyed by this eruption). A new ocean entry began on the eastern edge of Kupapa`u, marking the first ocean entry outside the national park since 1991.    In early 2002 tube flow slowed and ocean entries stopped. Breakouts occured higher upslope and by march had created a nearly 3km long ridge of lava shields above 2000 ft. elevation. Crater activity also picked up and fed new flows into Royal Gardens. By Mother's Day, another flow (this time on the western edge of the flow field) issued from a flank vent on the west of Puu Oo and entered forested lands and took over most of the lava supply from the other parts of the flow. It reach the sea in July 2002 and continued for the next year. A second breakout from this same lava tube sent a new flow seaward in early 2003 for a few weeks. By later in the year, activity had diminished near the coast activity shifted upslope again as surface flows and spatter cones.    Jan 2004 saw resumption of flows directly from the crater for the first time since 1998 and activity there continued through March 2004. A flow named for Martin Luther King Day (the MLK flow) began during this period. A second breakout occured on Prince Kuhio Day in March, producing what HVO calls the "PKK" flow. It was the main flow through by Aug 2004, and continued through 2005, with ocean entries from two branches begining in Nov 2004 and June 2005. This became the dominant tube by August 2004. The Mother's day tube also once again began producing "rootless" shields in early 2004, producing a flow that entered the sea from May to July 2004. Activity resumed in and around Pu`u `O`o crater in Jan 2005, with spattering through Feb. 2005 and the formation of sevaral small lava ponds. The PKK flow remained active through Dec 2005. Activity remains intermittent as well on the MLK flow. W e mentioned it in our overall guide to Hawaiian cuisine , but it's worth a mention here, too. The plate lunch is as big a part of life in Honolulu as surfing and avoiding overly-strenuous work. It is served mainly out of mobile roadside carts throughout the city and consists of beef or pork, Hawaiian noodles, two scoops of rice and sometimes macaroni salad. For around $5, it's one of Hawaii's best food values. It's also delicious. It's so popular here that its served as a drive-thru, the L&L Drive-in. There are locations all over the island, including one just inland of Duke's on Kuho Ave., just Ewa of the International Marketplace (this is a walk-in place, with tables or food to-go, called L&L Hawaiian Barbeque). There's also the Rainbow Drive-in. Another inexpensive lunch option is Auntie Pasta's (Beritiana and Pensacola). It has great Italian food for $6-10. There's no parking, though. While we're on the budget items, Magoo's is a local pizza place that's as much of attraction for the cheap beer as it is the food. Young locals go here to eat, drink and be merry. The best food deal in Honolulu is, without question, Happy Hour at the Chart House. It features large appetizers at Chart House quality for $5-7. Served in the bar area, it overlooks sunset at the Gilligan's Island harbor. There's always a slight breeze blowing, a mellow musician and drinks also at Happy Hour prices ($3 for a pint of local lager). It's just above the Harbor Pub, which has arguably the island's best pizza. Beers are just $1.25 from 4-7 and the cocktails are a strong pour. The Shack is a wooden, well, shack, that serves fantastic burgers and cold beer right on the water in Kailua on Ohau's windward side. It's far from the tourist areas and has sister locations in Los Angeles. and Tuesdays are "Shack attack" days, meaning all burgers are $1 cheaper. A couple of finer restaurant choices are Roy's in Hawaii Kai (just past Maunalua Bay) for Euro/American fare. There are 25 nightly specials and an extensive wine list. Sam Choy's on the edge of downtown is one of the best spots for authentic Hawaii food. Gordon Biersch is a small national micobrewery chain, but the food is terrific. Located in Aloha Towers, it's a popular eating/gathering spot, making it an ideal place to drink, socialize and nourish. Sansei is a rock 'n roll sushi place in the Marriott (sushi is half-off every night after 10 p.m.). It gets a good bar crowd, too. Angelo Pietro's is another restaurant/bar that's more of a bar than a restaurant on Sunday nights. Same deal with the Brew Moon , a microbrewery in the Ward Center. But don't miss the Asian/French fusion at Angelo Pietro's, one of the locals' favorite dining spots. One the fine dining side, Michel's in the Colony Surf Hotel is one of Honolulu's best restaurants. It's French and expensive and men need a jacket (they will provide one for those who packed only, say, Aloha shirts). Ask for "Antie Eva" for the royal treatment. This traditional dining spot has been a tradition since opening in 1962. For all-night munchies within stumbling distance of the bars is the Wailana Coffee House across the street from the Hilton). It's an upscale coffee house open 24 hours. We can't vouch for the quality of the food, but late at night, it's often a place's location that matters more than its taste. Bar trivia: Wilt Chamberlain used to live above the Wailana when he was in Honolulu. He could be found playing handball on the courts by the beach almost daily.
