Maryland Pkwy Las Vegas, NV 89119 Sahara Square - Maryland & Sahara With the growing number of L & L Hawaiian Barbecue franchise restaurants in the Las Vegas Valley we decided to pay a visit to the Sahara Square branch. The restaurant consists of counter style ordering, seats a cozy (approximately) 50 people and has an island feeling with it's bamboo decor. Combination plate lunches are about $8, single plate lunches average $4 for mini size, $6 for regular size. Plate lunches include two scoops of rice and Hawaiian Style Mac Salad. Saimin bowls and sandwiches are between $2 - $3. Also includes an array of side orders ranging from $1 - $4. Entering the restaurant and walking up to the counter it's a little overwhelming (in a good way) with it's extensive Local plate lunch menu. The counter person showed patients while it took a few minutes to decide on our order. Our fist order was the Seafood Platter which included fried shrimp, mahi mahi, and scallops. The shrimp was good, mahi mahi was very tender. The scallops was so-so. Maybe because it's not part of our typical Hawaiian/Local diet. We then tried the island favorite Chicken Katsu, large serving and lightly breaded. The tender and juicy chicken tasted even better with their special blended and sweet tasting katsu sauce. We also ordered a regular size Hawaiian Teriyaki Beef plate. Again it was of a generous portion. The teriyaki marinade seemed a little strong for the thin cut of beef, but still desirable. The grilled boneless chicken in the Hawaiian BBQ Chicken plate was superb and plentiful. We still had room in our opu (stamach) so we went with one of their Sweet and Sour Spare Rib specials. Meat/bone cut was quit a bit larger than the norm, but certainly nothing to complain about. The sauce had a perfect blend of sweet-n-sour. Overall we enjoyed our visit to the Sahara Square L & L Hawaiian Barbecue franchise. We were impressed with their menu and quick friendly service. Our visit was unannounced and funded by Aloha Valley. Later, introduced to the fabrics and sewing techniques of American missionaries, islanders developed the elaborate appliqud flower, leaf and vine designs that have become the hallmark of a "Hawaiian quilt." Today, quilts are being made throughout Hawai'i by women and men of all ages, professions and ethnicities who stitch away in quilt shops, in classes and at home. Many of today's quiltmakers combine design motifs from the past with creative ideas of their own, producing textiles as unique as the artists themselves. Helen Friend is one Hawai'i artist whose quilts reflect current events and contemporary vision. A passionate needlewoman since the age of five, it wasn't until 1985 that she discovered quilting as a form of expression. While her large quilts and hangings honor traditional patterns, she prefers to explore her own ideas and create something totally new. "Every quilt should have a reason behind it; that's where the mana (spiritual power) comes in," says Friend. Friend has drawn inspiration from the challenges of major competitions, from nature's power, from news articles, from conservation work on historic textiles, and from class assignments at the University of Hawai'i fiber arts program. Since her first quilt 10 years ago, Friend has tried to make a quilt a year to enter in local, juried mixed-media exhibitions. Her first piece, Liberty Quilt, represented Hawai'i at the Great American Quilt Festival in 1986, a competitive show held in New York to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. After Liberty Quilt, Friend turned her attention homeward and created a series of quilts that originate in traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs but depart from rigid convention. Her latest creation is Red Wall, hand-sewn in reverse appliqu. Says the artisan, "The idea first came from a color combination I saw a few years ago. But as I began to work, the catastrophe of Rwanda unfolded. And as I finished the project, the war in Bosnia continued. I like to think that each stitch recognizes a life lost." No matter what project shes involved in, its clear that Friend loves her work. "To me," she says with a satisfied smile, "quilting is a most satisfying way of recording my life." sample sample What plants and supplies made Hawaiian quilts? When and how did the start?The Hawaiian quilts first started when the hawai'ians held their first sewing circle on Sandwich Island. The first time they met was on April 3,1820. The ladies came from Boston and started the sewing circle. The plants used to make the designs for the Hawaiian quilts are ulu, pineapple, mum, hibiscus, wood rose, anthurium, white ginger, laua'e, heliconia, torch ginger, bird of paradise and kukui. To make the design, they study the shape of the plants and then create an exaggerated form of pattern which is beautifully symmetrical. The tools that the makers used were quilting hoops, sharp pins, bees wax, needles, art gum, scissors , dritz maker, ruler, thimbles, thread, stem ripper, pens and pencils. The quilting hoops come in all kinds of sizes. Sharp pins need to be ordinary straight pins and perfect silk pins will do the job but quilting pins are better. The art gum for cleaning spots or light penciled lines. The ruler comes in handy. Your middle finger is the pushing finger. Thimbles are important to use for your middle finger and for your thumb. It will be easier to use a thinner needle so the appliqueing of the quilt will look better.
