Hawaii's Volcano Quake And Tsunami Man- MidWeek Cover 01-19-2005 | Midweek.com Hawaii's Volcano, Quake &Tsunami Man Brian Yanagi By Alice Keesing Volcanoes, earthquakes and tsunamis. Thats quite an explosive trio and its up to Brian Yanagi at state Civil Defense to prepare Hawaii for the trio of natural disasters. The dynamic nature of his charges has earned the former naval intelligence officer the nickname of Mr. Shake n Bake. On the serious side, its his job to make sure they dont become massive killers. Yanagi would never say it, but there have been frustrating times in recent years trying to keep the public alert and prepared for such devastating disasters. While tsunamis are the No. 1 natural disaster killer in the Islands, a whole generation has grown up without experiencing one. The it wont happen to us mindset has taken hold. But oh, how things have changed since Dec. 26. After the Indian Ocean earthquake and South Asia tsunami, Yanagi and other tsunami experts have been in hot demand. I have been getting multitudes of international, national and local media calls about Hawaiis tsunami preparedness program, Yanagi says. The focus may be on another part of the world right now, but its also time to shake up Hawaiis attitude to the killer waves. Tsunamis killed 221 people and injured hundreds more in Hawaii in the 20th century compared to seven people killed by hurricanes. And Yanagi worries that with todays densely populated coastlines, the potential for death and destruction is even greater. There has been an unusual period of quiet in recent times, but the oft-repeated line in tsunami circles is that its not a matter of if, but when. I would say that Hawaii is more susceptible to destructive tsunamis than the Indian Ocean countries, Yanagi says. Thats because Hawaii sits in the middle of the Pacific Ring of Fire, a geologically volatile circle ripe for the earthquakes and underwater landslides that can shift the huge amounts of water that trigger tsunamis. The location that most worries Yanagi is the Aleutian Islands off the coast of Alaska an earthquake there could spawn a tsunami that races south across the Pacific at 500 mph and reaches Hawaii in just five hours. Other areas the experts keep an anxious eye on are Chile and Japan. And then theres the potential danger of locally produced tsunamis. An earthquake on the Big Island could spawn a tsunami that sweeps ashore and through the islands in a matter of minutes. The real sleeper is Mauna Loa, Yanagi says. When it erupts, the strong earthquake shaking could generate a tsunami. Thats the one we need to keep an eye out for. Experts predict Mauna Loa will probably erupt in the next five years. The good news is that Hawaii is the most tsunami-prepared state in the nation and many are turning here for a role model in the wake of the recent tragedy. But given that, experts still agree there is a lot more that could be done even here. Yanagi and others hope the South Asia tragedy will provide the impetus for more resources to keep improving the system. In particular, Yanagi would like to see the number of tsunami detection buoys in the Pacific increased from six to as many as 30. Its those eyes in the ocean that help the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center predict the arrival of killer waves. Civil Defense also has spent years producing detailed checklists and developing response plans. When Civil Defense needs to spring into action, its hobbit-hole type bunker burrowed into the wall of Diamond Head Crater is full of ceiling-to-floor charts and maps, communication systems, an emergency radio broadcast facility, a generator and even bunks and supplies so the operation can continue 24 hours a day. Its part of Yanagis job to keep all that information up to date with the latest scientific information and to drill and drill and redrill the response plans. This is what Yanagi wants you to know:When the sirens sound, turn on your radio for the Civil Defense message. If its a tsunami warning, check your phone book to see if you are in a tsunami evacuation zone. If you are, get to higher ground. In the case of Waikiki, where an en masse evacuation would only result in traffic gridlock, the advice is to evacuate vertically get above at least three stories. People outside of the tsunami evacuation zones should just stay put, Yanagi says. Dont get in your car because youll just contribute to the traffic. Parents should also know that DOE schools are prepared to walk their students out. They practice and drill this. So parents dont need to rush down to pick them up. The situation becomes more urgent in the case of a locally produced tsunami. Things will happen so fast that there may not be time for a warning siren. If the ground shakes severely, or the ocean recedes or you hear the sound of a freight train coming for you, says Yanagi, thats Mother Natures way of warning you to get to higher ground. One of the nightmare scenarios for people like Yanagi and one that tragically occurred in South Asia is when people go down to look at the seabed that can be laid bare by the strong undertow-type forces that can precede the wave train. Animals sense danger and they run away, but when humans sense something unusual, even dangerous, they tend to wander down in harms way, Yanagi says. Now (after all the footage from South Asia) theres really no excuse for people to be wandering down to the ocean in the event of a tsunami. Hawaii tsunami expert Walter Dudley credits Yanagi and Civil Defense with efforts to educate the public on the dangers of tsunamis. The division teamed up with the Pacific Tsunami Museum and the Center for the Study of Active Volcanoes to distribute thousands of DVDs trying to debunk the myth that a tsunami is a surfable wave. Theyve been very, very proactive in that sense, says Dudley, author of Tsunami! and an oceanography professor at the University of Hawaii at Hilo. Worrying about impending threats has been the story of Yanagis career. Although to start with, he used to worry about manmade threats rather than those from Mother Nature. Yanagi grew up in Kaimuki, a childhood that he wryly says was spent trying to stay out of trouble and earn good grades to please his parents. His dad was Stanley Maui Yanagi, who was head of the Carpenters Union for 25 years in the 40s and 50s when Hawaii was becoming unionized. After graduating from Kalani High (where he was class president), Yanagi received a Congressional nomination to the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Md., from U.S. Sen. Spark Matsunaga. He earned his oceanography degree before going on to serve as a naval intelligence officer aboard the aircraft carrier USS Midway . Yes, it was real spy stuff, he says. Yanagi lived with Top Gun aviators and briefed them on Soviet Union and Middle Eastern intelligence operations. This was during the edgy times of the Iranian hostage crisis, the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan and the outbreak of the Iran-Iraq war. Yanagi had top-secret security clearance a real eye-opener to the world. The news only reports the tip of the iceberg, he says. I got to see the whole iceberg, what was really happening with politics and the military in the world. After retiring from the Naval Reserves, Yanagi went on to teach algebra and trigonometry at Hawaii Pacific College in the mid-80s. He then worked as a public relations consultant to Turtle Bay Resort promoting golf tournaments, including the inaugural Senior Skins Legends of Golf Tournament featuring Arnold Palmer, Gary Player, Chi Chi Rodriguez and Sam Snead. (Yanagi is a keen weekend chaser of the little white ball himself.) He joined the state Civil Defense Division in 1990. Last year he won the state defense departments employee of the year award. Thats pretty impressive when you consider the size of this department; thats thousands of people, says Civil Defense spokesman Ray Lovell. Hes very dedicated to what hes doing, Lovell adds. He realizes that the work he does, that were dealing with real life-and-death stuff. That has been driven home by what we saw in the Indian Ocean. We cant let down. When you spend your day thinking about killer waves that could descend within a matter of hours, it probably pays to have some light relief in your life. For this self-described middle-aged DINK (double income no kids), that relief came with an adventure into acting that started in the mid-90s. He got the bug when The Phantom of the Opera appeared at the Blaisdell. You just see how much fun these people are having on stage, Yanagi says. Its one of the great escapes you can have in life. Youre being another person for a while in your life. Its very invigorating. So he sings? Well, yes, badly, but I do sing. And Im trying to dance without falling over myself, he laughs. Yanagi has performed in half a dozen musicals, starring in Flower Drum Song with KHNL-8 anchor Jodi Leong, South Pacific with American Idol s Jordan Segundo and My Fair Lady with KHON-2s Tina Shelton. But these days, Yanagi is more involved with events on the world stage, organizing a visit to South Asia with an international team of scientists. They will be analyzing the damage caused by the tsunami. That information will help prepare Hawaii better for the next destructive tsunami, he says. Like others, Yanagi has been touched by the human tragedy. Even he is floored by the magnitude of the event. It just personally commits me more to this cause of saving lives and reducing property damage. To do that, he says, he needs people to pay attention and be smart too. MidWeek Home Page

Goemetry and Quilts Lesson Quilt Blocks: Geometry with a Cultural Warmth Subjects :Geometry, Social Sciences, Clothing and Textiles, Art Patty Winkler Michael E. DeBakey High School for Health Professions Houston, TX email address: pwinkler@houstonisd.org All rights reserved. Any use of these materials is prohibited without the expressed written permission of the author. Overview This lesson can be taught at any grade level but is recommended for middle or high school. It is meant to be a fun lesson to generate interest in geometrical patterns and the world around us. Objectives Develop an appreciation of geometry as a means of describing the physical world Recognize and appreciate the geometric patterns found in quilts Describe the symmetry and other geometric aspects of quilt block patterns Create scale drawing of life objects. Discuss the history and cultural influence of some of the quilt blocks found Find and view information from the WWW Materials Needed squares of paper or cloth for Hawaiian quilts (see procedures for details)quad rule graph papercolored pencils, markers or crayonsresource materials listed below Procedures Quilting is a wonderful pastime which has lost its luster and interest in todays generations. Quilting has many wonderful traditions which can be explored in may different ways. I have outlined some ideas below and included just a few of the cultural resources I have found. Try to find a guest speaker to discuss quilting and some of the new and old patterns. Hawaiian quilting: Hawaiian quilting differs from that which evolved in other parts of the world. Its unique method of design leaves a striking impression on anyone who has the opportunity to view a finished product. The actual emergence of this style of quilting is pure speculation, as to date, no information has been found to substantiate any one theory. A set of instructions and steps for making a quilt are included with the lesson. Take some time to read the Introduction to gain a better understanding of the emergence of this type of quilting. After the history has been discussed, have the students create a design of their own by following the steps for folding and creating the design. If square are not available in the suggested 16 and 20 size, use 6 and 8.5 squares. Once they have created a design in one color from a 6 square have them choose another color to paste it on. Once they have created their quilt block have them fake the echo stitching by lightly demonstrating the technique in pencil throughout their block. Once all blocks are completed by the students, put them together on a bulletin board or tape their backs together to create your own Hawaiian quilt. Have students discuss how they got the design they had and if they were using anything from their life or nature to create the design. Early American/European patchwork quilting This type of quilting involves cutting pieces of cloth in specific shapes and sizes to create a desired pattern. There are hundreds of patchwork patterns and variations with new ones being developed regularly. I have included the initial page from an Internet site on Amish quilts. The Amish are famous for their quilting techniques. The midwestern Amish do more intricate patchwork designs where the Pennsylvania Amish have very simple patchwork with very intricate and detailed quilting lines. The quilts with the detailed stitching are desired worldwide and can be very expensive. Students should do some research on patchwork quilting. There are a number of sites on the Internet as well as a numerous magazines and books available on the market. Once they have seen some of the patterns which are already in existence, show them the two that are included here. One is called Kaleidoscope and the other is called Fractal. They can see a very direct relationship to mathematics through these quilts. They are both brand new designs. African American quilting The influence of the African textile techniques and practices are evident in the quilts with this distinct style. African style quilting shows two major influences. First is the African preference for strip textiles and strips of cloth developed on hand looms. Second are the religious symbols of their cultures. These both appear in many of the quilts of African-American quilting. Some of the most famous quilt designs include: Lazy Gal; Spider Leg; Twin Sisters; Spider Web; and Wild Goose Chase. Whether consisting of a single piece or many small scraps of cloth, strips are a dominant design element as well as a chief construction technique in both West African textiles and Afro-American quilts. I have included a copy of the article African Symbolism in Afro-American Quilts from African Arts magazine. The reference is included in the reference list at the end of this group of lessons. Once the students have had a chance to explore patchwork quilting, have them use graph paper to design (in scale) and color their own patchwork quilt. Quad rule graph paper works best here. Have them share these designs either in small groups or by placing them on a bulletin board or empty wall. Evaluation The creation of the designs discussed above. Resource Materials Quilting in America Paint a Quilt Lesson Quilt Gallery Quilts - One of my favorite things Immigration Quilt Project Hawaiian Quilting materials Aloha Quilts Helen Friend-Hawaiian Quilter Amish Quilting Materials Homepage for American Quilts Amish Art African-American quilting article General quilting information Yahoo search - Quilting Teacher Comments Growing up in a small, rural, farming community gave me a deep appreciation for the art and craft of quilting. I am not very skillful, unlike my sister and my aunts; however, I do see and understand the geometry involved in designing an appealing quilt. There are hundreds (maybe thousands) of quilt block designs all around the world. Each of them was created by someone who wanted to tell a story, make a point, or stir an emotion. This is an art that is dying and needs to be rekindled in the younger generations.

Upon visiting the Koele lodge, I knew I had to come back someday. I went back 15 years later (last March) and got engaged there. The people of Lanai have not changed at all, they are friendliest people in all of Hawaii, embodying the essence of aloha. At the time of reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion. I told them of my planned engagement. The manager of the hotel made sure that a bottle of champage and chocolate covered strawberries (all complementary) were set up in our amazing room after coming back from proposing. The room was beautiful, overlooking the lake and golf course. The hotel and its property are phenomenal- championship golf course, putting green, shooting range, croquet, shuttle to Manele bay (beach) and downtown, biking, and much more. On top of this, you have a staff who accomodate your every desire and are always pleasant. I cannot say enough about how great the service is. Everyone was amazing. We weren't able to go on a honeymoon yet, but this engagement trip would cerrtainly be hard to top. The lodge at Koele is unlike any other Hawaii hotel, in that it is situated inland and has a rustic, "hunting-lodge" type feel. It is very serene and peaceful. My wife and I are looking forward to staying at the Koele lodge again. If you are looking to be close to the beach or be in a beach resort type setting, you should stay a its sister property the Manele Bay. We not only fell in love with the Lodge, but most absolutely with Lanai as well. The Lodge is the perfect base of operations to explore and experience magnificent Lanai. Where do I start? The shuttle to Manele Bay makes it easy to partake in any activities on the water - we went sea kayaking, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, etc - those activities were through Trilogy - whose staff was very polite and efficient. The shuttle ride between the two hotels is about 20 minutes. We also golfed at the lodge, played mini golf on the "executive putting course" and went horse back riding - all excellent. Reading reviews on this site had me greatly intimidated about food costs - luckily I did not book a meal plan at the lodge. I would strongly reccomend that you get out into Lanai city and enjoy some of the local restaurants. It is a nice walk into town, or you can catch the hotel shuttle into town. We ate at Pele's Other Garden, the Blue Ginger Cafe and Henry Clay's. All were excellent. The Blue Ginger was the least informal and also the cheapest. Our dinner for two at Pele's was $70 to give you an idea of prices. At the Lodge our informal dining room dinner tab was $90. Eating in town saved us some money, gave us greater variety in food and really let us interact with some local culture. The food at the Lodge while very good, was not excellent - I caution foodies that over an extended stay they may feel something is lacking (especially in selection). But let's remember, this is an island with just 3,000 people on it. Lastly, I also strongly reccomend renting a jeep and driving to some of the more secluded spots on the island - Polihua Beach is gorgeous. After an extended 4x4 required drive we found ourselves on a miles long beach with Humback whales frolicking off shore and one other car parked in the distance. The same was true of Shipwreck beach, where we snorkeled with about a dozen green sea turtles in the protected cove along shore. Lanai is quite simply a secluded gem - I will be back and I rarely consider repeating destinations. We have been to the other large Hawaiian islands, and decided to try Lanai for something different. Unlike the other Hawaiian resorts we have stayed at, this one was not on the beach and was not "glitzy." Instead, it is warm and sophisticated, something like an English country estate. We were greeted with leis, warm washcloths, and fresh pineapple juice. Our room was lovely and quiet. "Quiet" seems to describe The Lodge best; lots of wicker chairs on long porches for relaxing reading, tea in the "great room" every afternoon, and a quiet swimming pool. The grounds are large and beautifully landscaped; bring lots of film! We had not rented a car because we planned on using the free shuttle between Manele Bay, Lanai, and The Lodge. The shuttle was fine for this, but we decided we'd like a car for one day to see more of the island. (At $140/day for a Jeep, one day was enough!) However, there were none available, so I'd recommend reserving one for a day before you go. We also had trouble with our luggage. No problem getting to Lanai from Kauai, but our luggage didn't show up at home until 24 hours after we did. The airline said it had never been put on the plane in Lanai. Friends looking at my pictures ask if we were the only ones staying at The Lodge, because there aren't any other people in the pictures! We did take most of them early in the morning, but even so, don't expect crowds; this is a place for solitude and relaxation. But it's nice that you can also golf, snorkel, play putt-putt golf, lawn bowl, hike, or mingle with the natives in Lanai. But if you want to eat, bring your charge cards, because food at The Lodge, Manele Bay, and the Hotel Lanai is expensive. The only other choices are small local spots in Lanai. I would definitely return to The Lodge, but would stay 4-5 days and bring lots of good books! I wish I'd had more time to sit on the porch or by the pool! Traveler rating: Lanai City: The Lodge at Koele : "Loved Koele" Nov 2, 2003 : A TripAdvisor Member, Austin, TX Compare prices with: My husband and I will definitely go back to the Lodge at Koele. The hotel is completely different then anything else you will experience in Hawaii. The room was clean and large and the staff was excellent. No coffee makers in the rooms but the hotel provides better coffee down in a centrally located area. The hotel is so quiet that oftentimes you feel you are the only one there so it is no big deal to throw on a robe in the morning, get your coffee and enjoy it back on your private patio while listening to the birds in the morning. The property at Koele is lush and the hotel has many activities that customers can take part in. My husband and I are golfers and we think Koele is one of the best courses we have ever played. They have an executive 18-hole putting course that is fun to use even if you don't play golf. Koele is even better because they are affiliated with The Manele Bay Hotel so if you need some beach action there is a free shuttle that takes you back and forth between the two hotels. The Spa at Manele Bay will let you use one of their lockers in the spa if you need to store clothes there for the day but be aware they charge you for it. Be careful when you leave the airport. You travel on a small airplane and even though our two golf bags and two large suitcases made it over, when we were departing we were told we had too much luggage and we had to leave our clubs. It took 24 hours for our clubs to reach us in Kona which kind of messed up the tee times we had there. Bring plenty of money because meals are pricey! You can eat dinner one night in Lanai City but do not expect much, this is a very small island. I highly recommend the Lodge at Koele to anyone who wants privacy, 5-star service and accomendations.
