Waimea Cherry Blossom Heritage Festival Enjoy arts and crafts, parades, food, Taiko drums, bon dancing, karaoke, hula cherry blossom art and much more in this annual festival honoring the janpanese culture. March Annaul Tahiti Fte of Hilo Come out and watch the finest in Tahitian dancing. At least 20 Polynesian dance companies (halau) are expected along with 250 solo dancers from various dance companies. Arts and crafts and food from Tahitian and local artisans will be available. Kona Brewers Festival The second Saturday in March brings opportunity to sample the best of local beer at a festival including live music, fire dancing, fashion, food, and an award ceremony for best home brew. Annual Stampede Rodeo Hawaiis ranchers, known as paniolos, started their annual rodeo on the Big Island more than 35 years ago. Admission is free for the two-day, action-packed event. May Keauhou Kona Triathlon This annual triathlon is a half ironman distance race held on the Kona Coast of the Big Island of Hawaii. It includes a 1.2 mile swim in Kailua Bay, a 56 mile bike starting at Kailua Pier and going up Kuakini Highway to Queen Kaahumanu Highway and a 13.1 mile run from the Ohana Keauhou Beach Resort along Alii Drive and back. Remains of two important heiau (places of worship) that were rededicated as war temples by Kahekili, Maui's last ruling chief. Viewpoint of Central Maui. Park gate open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 10.2 acres 'Iao Valley State Monument End of 'Iao Valley Road (Highway 32), 'Iao Valley. Scenic viewpoint of 'Iao Needle, an erosional feature which abruptly rises 1200 feet from the valley floor. Park gate open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 6.2 acres Kaumahina State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 28 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 hours drive. Forested rest stop with picnicking and scenic viewpoint of northeast Maui coastline. Showy exotic plants. No drinking water. 7.8 acres Makena State Park South of Wailea at Pu'u Ola'i volcanic cone just beyond the end of Wailea Alanui Road. Scenic wildland beach park characterized by prominent cinder cone and large white sand beach. Swimming during calm seas, bodysurfing, board surfing, shore fishing, and beach- related activities. No drinking water. 164.4 acres Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area At 6200 feet elevation in Kula Forest Reserve, 9.7 miles upland from Kula on Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue (Highway 377); 4-wheel drive vehicle recommended. Camping and lodging (one cabin) within the fog belt of Kula forest. Extensive trail system in the forest reserve, including through a forest reminiscent of the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest coast. Sweeping views of Central and West Maui, Kaho'olawe, Moloka'i and Lana'i in clear weather. Pig and seasonal bird hunting. Nights are generally cold; winter nights frequently have below freezing temperatures. No campground showers. 10.0 acres Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 38 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 1/2 hours drive. Rest stop and picnicking in the rain forest. An idyllic area with small scenic waterfalls and pools. No drinking water. 5.0 acres Wai'anapanapa State Park In Hana at end of Wai'anapanapa Road off Hana Highway (Highway 360), 52.8 miles east of Kahului Airport--3 hours drive. Remote, wild, low-cliffed volcanic coastline offering solitude and respite from urban life. Lodging, camping, picnicking, shore fishing and hardy family hiking along an ancient Hawaiian coastal trail which leads to Hana. Excellent opportunity to study a seabird colony and anticline pools. Other features include native hala forest, legendary cave, heiau (place of worship), natural stone arch, sea stacks, blow holes and small black sand beach. 122.1 acres Wailua Valley State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 32 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 1/4 hours drive. Viewpoint of Ke'anae Valley and Ko'olau Gap in Haleakala's rim, and of Wailua Village and taro patches in opposite direction. What element distinguishes an ethnic music style from other ethnic music styles? For example, what is the difference between Okinawa music and Scotland music? I think elements of music are (1) melody (scale), (2 ) chord, (3) rhythm, and (4) instruments. First, let's think about melody. Rock and Blues are easy examples, even though they are not ethnic music. Rock uses normal music scale while Blues includes blue-notes in its music scale. Next, think about chords. Rock uses simple chords (triad) while Jazz includes 7th in its chords. Chord progression of Jazz is more complicated than that of Rock as well. For rhythm, Rock uses 8 beat, Fusion uses 16 beat, Jazz uses 4 beat. Finally, think about musical instruments. It is easy to see differences between Classical music and Rock music. Especially, musical instruments are important elements of ethnic music, since each country has different music instruments. I am trying to capture features of each ethnic music style based on this idea, and to reproduce them with automated composing system. This page includes considerations that I faced when I embedded functions of ethnic music composition. About Hawaiian Music I am not sure that people consider Hawaiian music as ethnic music. But the music has very strong characteristics. Hawaiian music uses very slow sliding guitars and ukuleles. Guitar strings are tuned for major chord. (This kind of guitar is called slack key guitar.) So, Hawaiian music uses many major chords in its chord progression. I am not sure but I guess guitarist uses bottle neck and scratch strings with it. (I need more information,please help me.)
