Surfing instructor? Nope. Hula dancer? Negative. Lei stringer? Mmm, not quite. In fact, with more than 15,000 couples flying over Pacific waters to marry here every year, the job-of-the-moment is—you guessed it—wedding planning. "I Do" Experts Travel to any of the Aloha State’s six isles and you’ll find that these I-do experts are almost as ubiquitous as palm trees. You’ll see them toting voluminous Rolodexes stuffed with numbers for everyone from ukulele ensembles to fire-eaters, chocolatiers to florists, photographers to traditional Polynesian officiants. Distance is nothing to these gurus, who routinely work with couples all over the world—dashing off detailed e-mails that will be waiting for you when you log on in the a.m., scanning snaps of tropical floral arrangements, so brilliant that their aroma practically wafts off your screen, and mailing CDs of local music groups that the two of you can slow dance to at home. From your flight arrangements to a week’s worth of fun-in-the-sun activities for the wedding party, coordinators will do anything to create the poi-fect event—even if the only guest you’re planning on inviting is the sunset. Low-Stress Specialists Couples who want a low-stress affair leave the arranging to the wedding specialist at their resort, or hire an independent on-island coordinator. Though most professionals suggest starting the process as early as possible, especially for a large ceremony (ideally six months to one year), many can whip up a simple celebration in 24 hours—as long as you bring the bare essentials (government-issued photo IDs and a $60 marriage-license fee). Staying on after your vows? Your hotel may just treat you to some bubbly and an upgrade. Which brings us to the very best part of tying the knot in Hawaii. Instead of spending the first day of your married life on an airplane, you’ll be able to start your honeymoon the way the nuptial gods intended—in paradise. —Sally Brady Hawaii Wedding Countdown Checklist Hawaii Wedding Style Real Hawaii Wedding: Holly & Jeremy Getting Married in : Oahu Maui Big Island Kauai Molokai Lanai Brides.com Home | Fashion | Beauty | Wedding Style | Etiquette & Planning | Registry Ideas | Honeymoon | Real Brides Local Planning | Shop Online | Prizes and Offers | Newsletter | Privacy Policy | -- Advertise With Us | Contact Us Brides magazine In This Issue | Subscribe | Customer Care | Media Kit | Bookstore Fairchild Bridal Group Wedding Planning Sites: Brides.com | ModernBride.com | ElegantBride.com Prom Planning Site: YourProm.com Use of this site constitutes acceptance of our User Agreement and Privacy Policy .© Fairchild Internet, Inc. Coming Soon Aqua BAMBOO HOTEL, Waikiki The Aqua Bamboo Hotel is recently renovated from the former Marc Hotel . The address is 2425 Kuhio Ave ., local telephone 808-922-7777 . The Bamboo's lobby [with large plasma screen TV] and pool area are very lovely, and in our room there are a lot of great features, including custom designed furniture, crown moldings, quality carpet, glass brick shower stall, a double sink curved vanity, slatted wood bathroom ceiling. With an "official" summer rate of $145 for the VERY spacious room [ significantly cheaper on the internet ], it includes a kitchenette without a microwave, a sitting area with TV, sofa and desk, a separate bedroom that is behind a louvered wood shutter wall, three sliding glass doors for great ventilation, a lanai, and the room is located high enough above the street not to be too noisy. The problems here were just cosmetic, but I filled out an opinion form my third day, and the problems were fixed, so high marks go to the Bamboo for quick response. The rooms are a very good value, tastefully decorated in a kind of Metropolitan Home magazine sort of modern Asian theme, and for my needs [computer, photo equipment, paperwork, my need to cook], just about perfect. Many people wonder if they'll "need" to rent a car on Oahu. Even though TheBus circles the island for a ridiculously low fare, you won't have access to all the side roads and back roads along the way. The cost of renting a car is so low, especially considering all the money you've already spent to get here, it makes no sense to not rent a car for at least a day. That's why we call our guides Driving & Discovering Hawaii books! Our Circle Island Driving Map shows you those places and features that we feel should not be missed if you only have one day to explore... although there are actually many more choices than what we have included here. These others can be found in great detail, with explicit driving instructions, In our Driving & Discovering Hawaii: OAHU guidebook. LanaiLana'i, Hawaii LANA'I The Secluded Island Hawaii's sixthlargest island, Lana'i is sparsely populated with miles of pristine beaches, only thirtymiles of paved roads and not a single traffic light. A secluded island, it covers 141square miles that range in elevation from sea level to more than 3,400 feet. The lowlandsare fringed with beaches and rugged sea cliffs, while the highlands were a mosaic ofmeadows and woodlands, laced with rainbows and mountain mists. Once carpetedwith acre upon acre of pineapples, today it is the newest and most secluded resort in thearchipelago. Under the stewardship of land owner Lana'i Company, Hawaii's secluded islandnow offers visitors a complete island adventure from a rival at tiny Lana'i airport to thewarm hospitality of Lana'i 3,000 permanent residents. Lana'i boaststop rated golf courses. The 18 hole championship experience at Koele designed by golf guruGreg Norman and architect Ted Robinson will provide the ultimate challenge with views tofour other islands. The Challenge at Manele Golf Course designed by Jack Nicklaus has beenfashioned from more than 70 acres of natural lava fields around protected archaeologicalpreserves and provides dramatic ocean side views. Don't miss avisit to Lana'i's only town, tiny Lana'i city built by Dole pineapple interest in 1924.Surrounding a village green-filled with towering Norfolk Island pines, it is like steppingback a century into a plantation community. A small but fascinating museum houses localtreasures and provide an insight into Lana'i's history. There are excellent opportunitiesfor adventure and visitors are free to enjoy the run of this tropical island made possibleby Lana'i Company, which still owns 98% of the island. Camping sites are also available. There are fourwheel drive routes in the high forest through thick strands of eucalyptus and NorfolkIsland pines, hiking, horse riding, kayaking, scuba diving and snorkelling. You can strollthe beach where the only foot prints are yours, explore sites where the ancient Hawaiiansworked the land and fished the sea, or visit former pineapple fields which are now organicgardens supplying fresh fruit and vegetables. The natureconservancy stewards 598 acres set aside to preserve native plants in the hope ofunravelling some of the mysterious of Hawaiian evolution. From Shipwreck Beach on Lana'i'snorthern coast, you can see the rusting hulk of a World War 2 ship marooned on thetreacherous offshore reefs. One of Hawaii's best preserved Petroglyph sites is easilyaccessible by a short trail nearby. What makesLana'i unique is its sense of remoteness, seclusion and privacy. With the addition of asmall number of luxury homes on the island, Lana'i promises to become the ultimate retreatfor reclusive celebrities and millionaires as well as one of the world's top resortdestinations.
