History- Volcano Village came into being with the adventof sightseers to the calderas of Kilauea in the late 1800's. At firstthe old wealthy 'Kama'aina' (born in Hawaii) families established vacationhomes in the area to escape the heat of Hilo and Honolulu during the summermonths. Much later during World War II the military established KilaueaMilitary Camp on the edge of Kilauea Crater, bringing many visitors.
