If you are here for a little R&R, it's the perfect place. If you are looking for some fun or are in search of an adventure, you will find it here. If you are looking for something different, there is plenty to try. If you want to stay on the rugged side of things, you can find numerous hiking and mountain biking areas. Horseback riding has also become a popular activity within the area. If you prefer the traditional sports, test your skills on any of the local championship golf courses or go play a few sets at area tennis courts. You can also take aim with any of the sporting clay and hunting areas locally available. For those of you who prefer to play in the water a bit, try scuba diving or snorkel excursions with Trilogy Ocean Sports. Spa treatments, day ferry excursions to Lanai, whale watching (Dec-May), and fishing charters are just a few of the activities that will give you the chance to "get your feet wet." For everyone else, there is a wide variety of Lei making, crafts, and much, much more. Places to visit: The Munro Trail : Named for George Munro, the New Zealand naturalist who planted Lanai's magnificent pines, this eight mile four wheel drive and hiking trail starts about a mile north of Lanai City and climbs in a southeasterly direction through impressive rain forests and deep canyons. It leads to the 3,370-foot Lanai Hale, the highest point on the island. On a clear day, all of Hawaii's islands, except Kaua'i and Ni'ihau, can be seen from this perch. Manele Bay & Hulopo'e Beach : A section of paved highway 440 known as Manele Road links Lanai City with picturesque Manele Bay, which has a small boat harbor with slips for local boats and tour boats from Maui. West of this port is Hulopo'e the island's most beautiful and safest swimming beach. It is the only picnic site on Lanai that has tables, barbecues, showers and rest rooms. The Bay and Hulopo'e beach are part of a marine conservancy district, which means outstanding snorkeling. Kaumalapau Harbor : Another paved stretch of Highway 440 which, like the one to Manele Bay, cuts through miles of what used to be pineapple fields and is now hay fields, connects Lanai City with this main island port. Pineapples, vehicles and freight are shipped out from this harbor. Other than this activity the simple harbor is of little interest to outsiders, but the dramatic views of the sea, high bluffs, and jagged cliffs on the stretch of the coast are worth the six-mile ride from town. Kaunolu Village : Also on the south coast, about midway between Kaumalapau Harbor and Hulopo'e Beach, are the remains of a once busy fishing community. Scattered on a bluff above the ocean, these ruins of more than 80 homes and other structures are said to be the most extensive and best preserved in the state. A national historical landmark, Kaunolu lies at the end of a rugged three-mile jeep trail that can be traveled only when the soil is dry. This area was a favored summertime playground of a great King of the Hawaiian Islands, King Kamehameha the Great. From the cliffs high above the sea at Kahekili's deep leap, Kamehameha's soldiers proved their courage by plunging more than 60 feet into the ocean. Garden of the Gods : This is a fascinating canyon of wind carved sand and lava formations whose colors change throughout the day. Legend has it, that the rock formations were created by the gods. It is said that the gods like making art and this is where they would make their sculptures. The gods would make strong winds to sculpt their rock art formations. That is why there is no grass or trees in the garden of the gods, just dirt and stones surround. Legend tells us, it is bad luck to tamper with the artwork of the gods. So be respectful when visiting this sacred place. Polihua Beach : Just beyond Garden of the Gods, this trail snakes for a few miles down to a two-mile long white sand beach. This secluded, dreamy stretch of white sand is not recommended for swimming because of strong currents, but noted for excellent surfing. Great for picnicking or just strolling along the beach. Shipwreck Beach : Highway 440, also known as Keomoku road, leads from town to Lanai's northeast or windward coast. This narrow and winding road climbs high over the middle of the island and offers are stunning views of both Moloka'i and Maui as well as the abandoned, rusting hulls of two fairly large ships that gave the four-mile beach of white sand its name. Most of the eight mile stretch of road is paved until you reach a dirt road, which takes you left, into the entrance of the beach. Keomoku Village : At the end of the paved portion of Highway 440 (Keomoku Road) a dirt road branches right along the coast. Following this road about six miles will bring you to the site of the Maunalei Sugar Company, (it's said that if one hikes far into the trees toward the mountains, you'll find the remainders of the train tracks that was used to haul sugar cane). Having failed in 1901, all but one of the decaying buildings were razed in the early 1970's. Left standing was the Hawaiian Church. Legend maintains that sacred stones, placed by the Gods, were moved to build this fishing village. As a result, the water turned brackish and forced the villagers to leave. Lanai Weekly events : Saturday Market in Dole park: A weekly gathering of local vendors, as they proudly present authentic fares. Local grown vegetables, potted plants and a cultural mix of Hawaiian, Japanese, and Filipino delicacies can be found. Local artists and craft makers may also display their works of art here. Lanai Theatre : First run movies are played from Friday through Tuesday evenings. Two shows at 6:30 p.m. and 8:15 p.m. Special events : Lanai Visiting Artist Program: Throughout the calendar year the island community and visitors have a unique opportunity to meet and mingle with world-famous virtuosos of literature, music, film, fine arts and the culinary world. This program is sponsored by Castle & Cooke Resorts, LLC., Island Air and Happy Vacations. Please inquiry directly, for information on a schedule of the upcoming visiting artist program. This is a problem in Wailea where you're more or less dependent on your hotel. When we first checked in we loved the view and the balcony, and the place was huge. However we got tired of having to pay resort prices, but still had to drive down the hill to find an open restaurant or bar, or even go to the beach. The Japanese-style baths were cold and not relaxing. I have been to hot spring baths in Japan, and that is an inviting and invigorating experience. This was not. There is also a normal pool and hot tub, but they are only open until 6 pm! There are three restaurants: two Japanese, and one Italian. The Japanese-French one is not really haute cuisine like they make it sound. That's probably why the restaurant is almost always completely empty. The Italian restaurant is a little more lively, and we enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor bar there, but it doesn't stay open late like other bars in Maui. We didn't visit the third, because it was always closed. The condo has a Japanese-style shower-room and separate toilet room. These could have been cleaner, or updated. The kitchen was very small with a mini electric stove and no oven, no microwave, no dishwasher, no dish drainer. And you had to rent a set of pots that didn't include much. The refrigerator was tiny and filled with frost, and froze all our food, so we didn't cook very much in the room. The king bed really is two twins pushed together. I couldn't believe it. The employees were very nice, though it's true that not many spoke English well enough to give you tourism advice or directions. I think that's a primary function of any hotel and shouldn't be overlooked. The grounds are well kept and the sunsets are a glorious sight from your balcony. It's very quiet with no children and I appreciated that. But as we visited other Wailea resorts throughout the week, and sat on their beaches with tropical drinks, and ate at fun restaurants, and watched people relax on loungers at the pool all day, I couldn't help but feel that was the Maui experience we had wanted to have, and the Diamond was just lacking. My advice is either to pay more for a true Wailea resort on the beach, or stay in a friendly condo in laid-back Kihei. Traveler rating: Maui: Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa : "Not a good value" Sep 13, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, New York, NY Compare prices with: To my wife and I, the Diamond Resort was not worth the money spent. The grounds are okay, but the grounds next to the rooms were unattended too and unpleasant to see. The bathroom shower needed to be cleaned (by myself) with a pot scruber. The need to rent kitchen materials was a major disppointment and let down. The microwave also had to be rented. Such items are standard in places where we have paid 125% less. The Japanese dinning was great on service, small on food and a bit too costly to us. The spa area was the highlight of the stay. The 'body shower' and 'waterfall' were just what the body ordered! The need to pay for gym sessions with a personal trainer were also a disappointment. On vacation, we generally want to work out at our leisure, not be subjected to unwarrented training sessions. After paying for an overprice room the additional charges for all of the other basic items made this a place that we will not return. Traveler rating: Maui: Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa : "Perfect Change of Pace" Sep 10, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Beltsville, MD Compare prices with: I just took the family (wife (44), son (22) and daughters (19,17)) to Maui for 3 nights and Waikiki for 5, so we opened our trip at the Diamond Resort, which is really in Wialea. This was the perfect change of pace resort after a long flight from the east coast. The free spa is tremendous and relaxing (I hit it every night and my 17 year old had a facial and massage that made her trip - $100), and the rooms (really suites) were so clean and spacious. The property is large measured by land but very small measured by number of rooms, so you really get great treatment by the staff buy can hide away by yourself for peace and quiet if that's what you want. My daughters went to the Japanese restaurant at the resort and said it was the best. They also have a renowned Italian restaurant there, but I didn't try it. My one criticism is the king bed really isn't a king but two beds together, and the pillows were not great. And here is a tip...if you're older and/or don't walk very well, make sure you tell them so they can put you in a room that is close to the main level. The property is dramatically placed on a hill, so the lower you are the closer you are to the ocean but the more you have to walk up and down the hill. My kids were in building 20 and we were in building 1, and there room was much better than ours in term of walking and panoramic view. Even with these quirks, I give The Diamond Resort 4.5 stars; I knew my wife and I would love the place when I booked it, but I was shocked at how much my children loved it too. Sep 9, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Pelham, NY Compare prices with: I stayed at this hotel in: August, 2004 My ratings for this hotel are: Rooms Service Value Cleanliness Dining Activities and gym Pool I traveled to this hotel with: spouse/partner I recommend this hotel for: couples and romantics, honeymooners, seniors, tourists My visit was for: extended vacation We spent part of our honeymoon here and had wonderful time. The rooms are spacious and though we had a Garden View Room all rooms are ocean facing and we had a partial view of the ocean from the first floor. We enjoyed lovely sunsets from our location. The bed was MASSIVE and I loved the two white spa robes that were provided. And it was so cute that they provided a green tea set along with american coffee cups and coffeemaker. Whatever coffee or green tea we used was replenished daily by the maid service and our tea/coffee cups were cleaned by the service. It may be a minor inconvenience to rent cookware for $4 a day - but the cost is really nominal, and frankly who cooks all that much on vacation? The kitchen (more of a kitchenette) was really rather small to create a culinary masterpiece anyway - just 2 burners and a dorm size fridge. With all the spectacular restaurants in Maui we never ran out of options in 2 weeks. Also, I wanted to address some of the earlier reviewers' comments which are really misleading. First, while I will agree that this resort caters to a primarily Japanese clientele, I spoke with the front desk staff a few times, to have them change the time of our dinner reservation, ask general questions, and schedule spa appointments - there was no barrier in communication and things were handled as requested each time. In fact, the staff was mostly Hawaiian, so it is untrue that they only understand Japanese. Second, prior to our stay at Diamond it was very clear to me that the use of their fitness facilities are only for those who are using their personal trainers. I thought this limitation was unfortunate, but this is fairly clear. Their was no information in the brochure or the DR website to make you think otherwise. Aside from this, I just wanted to mention that the views were spectacular, I had a sublime facial at their spa - it lasted over an hour, we enjoyed feeding the koi that are in all the pools and waterfalls that are woven throughout the grounds (DR sells bags of food for just a $1), and their restaurant Capisché? ranks with the top restaurants in Maui for a reason - they have an extensive wine list, sophisticated menu and delicious food. The entire resort staff was very gracious and attentive to our needs during our stay. If you are looking for tranquility, privacy and amazing views, I would highly recommend this unique experience. And it is minutes from some of the best beaches and shopping in Maui. It is also one of the most economical places to stay in beautifully manicured landscape of Wailea. Thanks! Travel Links Hawaiian cruise, two nightsOne-of-a-kind Hawaii Cruise Deals BudgetTravelOnline.com One-of-a-kind Hawaii Cruise Deals A week-long Hawaiian cruise, two nights in Honolulu, and roundtrip airfare all together costs just $1,399 from dozens of cities Reid Bramblett Wednesday, July 30, 2003; Perhaps you'd love to take a cruise--a week at sea with nothing to do but have fun. Then again, it might be nice for a few days just to veg on the beach--not just any beach, but Waikiki, sipping a mai tai under the palm trees. OK, do you'd like to do both--but not pay too much for either...oh, and get some cheap airfare thrown in to cover it all. Would you believe it actually can be done? United Airlines has a branch of the frequent flier program called Cruise4Miles (888-666-8120, cruise4miles.com/ )--you can earn miles by buying cruises, or redeem airlines miles earned for a cruise. Anyone who signs up for the frequent flyer program (which is free) can get in on these deals. The logistical (and economic) problem with most cruises is that airfare is rarely included in the base price, and can often be pretty expensive. Same goes for the land portion of your trip, by which I mean landlubbing lodgings. Most folks arrive in the port of embarkation a day or two before the ship sets sail, and/or sometimes choose not to return home until the day after the cruise puts into port, which means you're stuck finding a night's hotel accommodations on either end of your cruise. Well, with a cruise shop run by an airline, one that is also adept at putting together air/hotel packages, that problem is niftily solved. Everything but the kitchen sink And boy, how niftily. Rather than charge everyone from each gateway a different rate, the base price--which covers roundtrip airfare, the seven-day cruise, and two nights lodging in Honolulu before or after the trip--is $1,399 from dozens of cities on the East Coast, Midwest, and Southwest. (That in of itself is a bit unusual--a cheap Hawaii deal not from the West Coast). The list of possible departure cities includes Atlanta, Albuquerque, Boston, Baltimore, Chicago, Colorado Springs, Dallas/Ft. Worth, Grand Rapids, Houston, Kansas City, Las Vegas, Memphis, Miami, Milwaukee, Orlando, Minneapolis/St. Paul, New Orleans, Newark, New York (LaGuardia), Omaha, Philadelphia, Tampa, and Washington, DC. The ship sails pretty much weekly from Sept 14 through Jan 4, but the cheapest rate--that $1,399--is available on the following sail dates: Oct 26, Nov 16, Dec 7, Dec 14, and Jan 4. You pick which end of the cruise you want to spend your two free nights in Honolulu at the Sheraton Princess Kaiulani ( princess-kaiulani.com/ ) or a similar property. (Sadly, you cannot split them up for one before and one after. Ah, well.) The cruise itself aboard the Norwegian Star ( ncl.com/ ) has restaurants, 14 bars and lounges, swimming pool and gym, etc.--lasts seven days. You leave Honolulu at 8pm to arrive at Hilo by 6am. You have seven hours to enjoy the Big Island before steaming off again at 1pm to spend a day and a half at sea en route to a 9am docking just across the International Date Line on Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati (one island up from Christmas Island; a silly US law forces foreign-flagged ships to hit at least one foreign port before returning to US soil). At 3pm it's time to head back Hawaii-way, arriving 46 hours later at Kahului on Maui, where you hang for the entire afternoon. At 10pm you set of again to steam overnight toward Nawiliwili, where you arrive at 8am for an eight-hour day on Kauai. Then at 4pm it's back on the boat for the final leg back to Honolulu, where you get in at 7am. Once again, go to Cruise4Miles (888-666-8120, cruise4miles.com/ ) to learn more about this offer. |
