Kalaupapa is on the north shore of Moloka'i, 2000 feet Sea cliffs that stretch to almost 4,000 feet, the kept the Kalaupapa residents from escaping this cruel and barren place. Then Father Damien arrived in Kalaupapa, Moloka'i from The Big Island of Hawaii, where he helped the people of Kalaupapa, get the respect they deserved. Kalaupapa grew to support the patients was formed by a central crater now full of water and its bottom is known to be a least 800 feet. While this area is generally referred to as Kalaupapa, it is in fact, Makanalua Peninsula which is divided into three districts: The Kalawao district on the eastern edge; Kalaupapa and the settlement of Kalaupapa to the west; with Makanalua in the center. Kalaupapa's reputation as a leprosy colony is well-known throughout the world. Hansen's disease, the proper term for leprosy, is believed to have originated in China and spread to Hawaii. The first documented case of leprosy in Hawaii occurred in 1848. Its rapid spread and unknown cure precipitated the urgent need for complete and total isolation. Surrounded on three sides by the Pacific ocean and cut off from the rest of Moloka'i by 1700-foot fortress like sea cliffs. The area was void of all amenities. No buildings, shelters nor potable water were available. The first arrivals dwelled in rock enclosures, caves, and in the most rudimentary shacks built of sticks and dried leaves. In 1873, when Father Damien entered the settlement of Molokai at age 33, he made a decision to set aside his fear of contagion. He embraced the lepers, cleaned and bandaged their wounds, and the Hawaiians knew his concern and love for them was unprecedented. Father Damien was the only one to bring the leprosy patients the succor they so greatly needed. He not only administered the consolations of religion, but also rendered them with as much medical and bodily comforts that were within his power. He dressed their ulcers, helped them erect their dwellings, dug their graves, and made their coffins. In December 1884, Father Damien noticed severe blisters on his feet without the presence of pain. After twelve years of service (1885), he discovered that he had symptoms of the disease. Nevertheless, he continued with his work. As death approached, the disease invaded his windpipe and progressed to such an extent that he could only sleep but for a few hours. His voice was reduced to a whisper. Leprosy was in his throat, lungs, stomach, and intestines. As the end drew near, he made his confessions to his own Congregation on March 30, 1889 and two weeks later, on April 15,1889, Father Damien died. It was Holy Week. Some weeks before, D,mien had said that the Lord wanted him to spend Easter in heaven. With the advent of sulfone drugs in the 1940s, the disease was put in remission and the sufferers are no longer so called contagious (we have since found out that Leprosy was never contagious). The fewer than 40 former patients remaining on the peninsula are free to travel or relocate elsewhere, but most have chosen to remain where they have lived for so long.

The sheltered coast and delightful beaches made Lahaina an ideal playground for the king and his royal family. Today, Lahaina could easily be called the fun capital of Hawaii. Known all over the world for its colorful waterfront atmosphere, Lahaina attracts over a million visitors each year. People of all ages love to explore the famous Fropnt Street where one can find resident celebrities like George Benson and Carol Burnett casually sipping cofee at one of Lahaina's sixty-odd restaurants. Informality and fun are written all over this town, a spirit that harks back to the 1840's when up to four hundred whaling ships would anchor off Lahaina 'Roadstead,' discharging their crews of rowdy sailors. Afer months at sea these 'salty dogs' went straight to the taverns for grog and bawdy merriment. Troublesome drunks were thrown in the 'Hale Pahao' prison which still stands on Prison Street. Strolling through Lahaina is a must for every visitor. The original historic flavor has been maintained through the efforts of the Lahaina Restoration Foundation, while being kept contemporary by the Lahainatown Action Committee. Hundreds of curio shops, sophisticated jewelers, art galleries and boutiques contain a myriad of wares ideal for gifts or personal mementos of your visit to Paradise. The historical town center is noted for its 110-year-old Banyan Tree, one of the world's largest, which grows over a whole block just in front of The Wharf Cinema Center. The Center, which boasts more than 50 shops and restaurants, surrounds a comfortable courtyard decorated with waterfalls and convenient, umbrella-shaded tables. Opposite is the Pioneer Inn, built in 1906, which looks out on the Lahaina Small Boat Harbor crammed with cruise boats and private yachts. Looking back from the Carthaginian, the authentic replica of a whaling brig, one can see the Seawall and shops lining Front Street. Beyond the Banyan Tree and past the tennis courts is 505 Front Street, a nautical 'village' of oceanfront shops and restaurants next to the Lahaina Shores Hotel. A walk toward the north end of town leads past the Wharf, the Seawall and Lahaina Market Place, a collection of shops and restaurants set in an open-court atmosphere. After Lahaina Shopping Center, with a large parking area and a good place to find photo supplies, suntan lotions and comfortable shoes, and across the street from Longhi's, you'll find the Lahaina Center, home of Hilo Hattie and the world-renowned Hard Rock Caf. A few blocks to the north, you can enjoy the air-conditioned comfort of the Lahaina Cannery. Lahaina, by day or night, is a warmhearted, romantic town which, for centuries, has been a popular haven for vacationers.

Hawaiian Barbecue

Marga's Foodblog: Restaurant Reviews + Wikiwiki Hawaiian -- Marga's Foodblog recipes - reviews - rants « Ono Hawaiian BBQ | Main | Got a lot of books » October 10, 2005 Restaurant Reviews + Wikiwiki Hawaiian Even though I've been eating out quite a bit lately, I've been very remiss about writing about the restaurants I've visited. Of course, you could argue that there is absolutely no reason why I should be writing about the restaurants in the first place, but as long as I do it, I figure I should be comprehensive. I'm particularly interested on being comprehensive about San Leandro restaurants, as there aren't really good resources out there on the San Leandro restaurant scene (and given how poor it is, no wonder). The problem comes when I go to a restaurant I don't particularly like and then I forget to write the review. After a while, i feel compell to go back and write it, and yet I don't want to go back and waste money in subpar food. But if I don't, my guide will never be comprehensive. This has happened with Buffet Fortuna - a horrible Chinese buffet located near the downtown Safeway, with Bancheros, an institution serving Chef-Boyardee tasting Italian food in Hayward and with a couple of burger joints. It also happened with Wikiwiki Hawaiian BBQ on East 14th, near Bayfair mall, which I visited last June. Wikiwiki is one of the many Hawaiian BBQ joints that have sprouted in San Leandro in the last year. As I've written before, I've found most of them to be underwhelming, and while Wikiwiki wasn't the worst, it certainly does not merit another visit. As in the other restaurants, I found the chicken to have a strange consistency, very dense, almost canned-like. I can only speculate as to what gives chicken that horrible consistency at Hawaiian BBQ places. One theory is that the high salt & sugar content of the marinade dries out the meat making it denser. Anothe perhaps more likely one, is that the places use "chicken filets", scraps of chicken that are manually pressed and glued together into the desired shape. The taste was OK, nothing special but certainly edible. I also ordered the lau lau pork, pork wrapped in taro leaves and steamed. The pork was covered with a shredded green substance that might have been the taro leaves, but more likely was seaweed. It certainly imparted a very fishy taste to the pork, which I found quite unpleasant, but others might like. I can't imagine going there again. Wikiwiki Hawaiian BBQ 15696 E 14th St San Leandro, CA (510) 276-0777 Posted by marga at October 10, 2005 08:28 AM| TrackBack Comments I have lived in southern california for quite a while and there are tons of L&Ls in my area. I visited Wikiwiki and thought that the food was same if not better than the other ones that i have eaten at. And about the Lau Lau, i believe that it consists of pork, butterfish, and taro leaves. I loved it, so i think that only local/or people who knows what it is able to judge and enjoy this hawaiian dish. Thanks..just my thoughts.
