This is one Maui snorkeling boat that really savors the experience. While most other boats set a course for a second location after the Molokini snorkel, the Four Winds instead stays at Molokini the entire day. Special attention is taken to assist passengers with snorkeling and there are plenty of flotation devices even boogie boards with glass ports for special underwater viewing. The Four Winds also has a large glass-bottom for those wishing to view the reef from on-board. Independence, sailed exclusively around the Hawaiian Islands 12 months of the year on weeklong cruises. After the collapse of American Classic Voyages, the Independence sailed to the Alameda Naval Air Station. On March 5, 2002, her mast hit the Carquinez Bridge while being towed by four tugs. The Independence was on her way to Suisan Bay, but was taken back to Pier 50 in San Francisco for repairs. The Independence was subsequently moored in April 2002 with the Suisun Reserve Fleet in Suisan Bay, California near the USS Iowa. In February 2003, the Independence was sold at auction for $4 million to Norwegian Cruise Line. NCL hopes to add the Independence to its U.S.-flagged fleet. Norwegian will begin sailing its U.S.-flagged ships in Hawaii in 2004. The Independence was originally launched during the heyday of ocean travel in 1950, but was treated to more than $78 million in refurbishments from 1994 to 2001. The ship is one of the few major cruise ships built in the United States, having been constructed at the Bethlehem Steel Company in Quincy, Massachusetts for American Export Lines of New York. It was intended for use as a trans-Atlantic passenger liner--yet, it adhered to post-World War II U.S. Navy specifications to permit rapid conversion into a troop ship, with a capacity for 5,000 men and their equipment. The vessel, as originally designed, was made entirely of non-combustible or fire-resistant materials and featured extra hull plating--and two engine rooms so that if one were damaged, the other could keep the ship moving at a relatively high speed. The seaside town of Lahaina , however, may be the islands notable exception. From rowdy sailors during the whaling era to modern-day stage productions, Lahaina has always been a bustling center of activity. In Lahaina, the fun heats up when the sun goes down. Front Street, the towns main thoroughfare, is a great place to catch the sunset, grab a bite to eat, enjoy an ice-cold brew or simply "kick back" and watch the colorful parade of people passing by. Front Street is also a window shoppers paradise, with more than a hundred shops and galleries to explore. Whats more, every Friday is "Art Night" in Lahaina, where visitors can take in special gallery shows, artist demonstrations, refreshments and entertainment. Lahaina has been dubbed "The Art Capital of the Pacific" because it has more art galleries per capita than any other town in America. One of the hottest shows in all of Maui is Ulalena , a 75-minute musical extravaganza performed five nights a week at the 684-seat Maui Theatre. Since its debut in the summer of 1999, Ulalena has garnered numerous awards, including "Best Show of the Year" at the statewide Hawaii Music Awards. National Geographic Traveler describes the show as "a Cirque du Soleil-like" presentation of Hawaiian mythology and magic that weaves lighting, dance, costume and music into an entertaining theatrical experience." Some of the towns more lively annual events include the Chinese New Year Celebration (January or February), Old-Fashioned Fourth of July fireworks show, A Taste of Lahaina (September), Aloha Festivals Hoolaulea (October) and Holiday Lighting of the Banyan Tree (December). And of course, Lahaina doesnt get any wilder than on October 31st, when more than 30,000 revelers descend on Front Street to take part in "Halloween in Lahaina."
