Would you really order rice AND potato salad if you had a choice? Ask anyone from Hawaii what they miss the most about home and the response is usually "the food". I can't tell you how happy I was to discover that L&L has come to Manhattan! My mouth waters everytime I think about it. They also have Portuguese sausage, which any local knows is a staple to a true local breakfast. I've eaten everything on the menu and I have to agree about the saimin, not the true local style. My only complaint...the one on 8th ave doesn't always play Hawaiian music. Posted by Carmela on 05/26/2005 The Perfect Lunch I'm always looking for tasty, fast, cheap food to have for lunch and when I saw this new restaurant I was a little skeptic of the claims on the flyers stuck on its window but the food looked delicious and the prices reasonable. The first time there I ordered the Luau special because it reminded me of my trip to Hawaii years earlier and wanted to experience that wonderful meal again. I was not disappointed! The food was way too much for me and I couldn't eat everything (that's the largest meal on the menu, I think) and felt very guilty because I'm trying to lose some weight. Unfortunately, the food in this place is addictive! Yes, it's that good! On my next trip I ordered a simple meal of barbecue chicken (the small size) which comes with a generous scoop of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and a small salad. Again, the meal was delicious. Needless to say, I have visited the restaurant again and again. You do have to wait a little while for the food but that's because it's cooked fresh. It's worth the wait. One complaint: my diet is shot! I couldn't wait to rush on over and have my first Hawaiian-style "plate lunch" in this fast-paste city. I loved the Lau Lau combo and especially the barbecue combo! I still can't believe how inexpensive they are. You really get alot of food for the bucks! I'll be going back for more of the Hawaiian-type fare but I have one bone of contention concerning my ultimate favorite local food...saimin. I ordered "your" saimin at the Fulton branch and I was very disappointed with it to say the least. The thought that I might finally have found a place that serves the kind of ramen one would get back home made me salivate at knowing that now that there's an L & L here I won't have to wait till my next visit to Hawaii to satisfy my cravings. The noodles were the type from your local Chinatown restaurant (more like spaghettinistraight and tastless) as for the soup base, it tasted like water with very little flavor. Hardly known, however, is that freedom also saves millions of lives from famine, disease, war, collective violence, and democide (genocide and mass murder). That is, the more freedom, the greater the human security and the less the violence. Conversely, the more power governments have, the more human insecurity and violence. In short: to our realization that power impoverishes we must also add that power kills. Through theoretical analysis, historical case studies, empirical data, and quantitative analyses, this web site shows that: uote Freedom is a basic human right recognized by the United Nations and international treaties, and is the heart of social justice. Freedom is an engine of economic and human development, and scientific and technological advancement. Freedom ameliorates the problem of mass poverty. Free people have the least internal violence, turmoil, and political instability. Free people have virtually no government genocide and mass murder, and for good theoretical reasons. Freedom is a method of nonviolence--the most peaceful nations are those whose people are free. And thus I have had to change the overall democide for the PRC (1928-1987) from 38,702,000 to 76,702,000. Details here. Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century. Finally, given popular estimates of the dead in a major nuclear war, this total democide is as though such a war did occur, but with its dead spread over a century. The land on which the Hotel is directly built was once the Ku'ekaunahi stream, which ran through the Queen's property. There were two summer homes on Lili'uokalani's property, one called Kealohilani and the other Paoakalani (literally translated as "heavenly fragrance"). Here she retreated to relax and informally entertain family, friends, and on occasion, visiting royalty. She also spent much of her time composing her songs and translating Hawaiian stories into English, surrounded by lily ponds and elaborate gardens, and when the trade winds blew, the fragrance of the topical flowers was carried throughout the estate. According to Queen Lili'uokalani, the large inviting living room was a place where "all could gather in joy and hospitality." Her home served as a comforting getaway from the pressures of business at I'olani Palace, several miles away. Nearby stood another one-story guest cottage, Kealohilani ("heavenly brightness"), where visitors enjoyed the tranquility of old Hawaii. In 1966, the Lili'uokalani Trust revealed plans for turning 16 acres of "old Waikiki" into a multi-million dollar resort development. American International Travel Services, Inc. (AITS) broke ground at this site in 1968 with plans for a twin towers, 23-story hotel at a cost of $12 million. Only one tower was initially completed. In October 1971, and at a cost of close to double the original estimate, the hotel officially opened. The grand opening ceremony took place on February 9-10, 1972. Reverend Abraham Akaka of the Kawaiahao Church conducted the blessing in the Garden Courtyard and Princess Abigail Kawananakoa, the niece of the late Queen Lili'uokalani, ceremoniously untied the maile lei. Eight years later, in 1979, the Kuhio Tower was added to the Resort, bringing the total room count to 1,346. In November 2000, Marriott International, Inc. assumed management of the hotel. Today, the area surrounding the resort bears little resemblance to the neighborhood at the turn of the century, but the traditions established by the queen continues to flourish at our resort. Maui Snorkeling

Snorkel Maui: Snorkel Equipment Intro Snorkel Equipment The Mask: This is what you put on ummmm your face. This allows you to see underwater without getting your eyes and nose wet. It's important that the mask is a good fit when renting or buying a mask. If the mask doesn't fit well, you will experience some leakage of water in the mask. I would highly recommend using a mask that has a "silicon skirt". The skirt is the soft substance that is molded to fit your face, and prevents water from entering the mask. You can also rent or buy masks that use rubber ask the skirt, but the seal is not nearly as good as the silicon, and is quite simply a dated technology. Ask your local snorkel or dive shop about choosing a mask that fits well. They will know what to look for. The Snorkel: Well, this is what makes you a snorkeler. A snorkel is a hollow curved tube that is placed in the mouth that allows you to breathe while you are face down in the water. So basically, while you looking down into the water, the snorkel is sticking out of the water on one end while the other end is in your mouth. When looking for a snorkel, I would recommend asking for what is called a "purge" snorkel. The Fins: This is what makes life a lot of fun. Fins allow you to swim like a fish. Yeeeha! There are 2 kinds of fins, but for snorkeling in warm water, most people will do just fine with the close heeled kind. The open heeled kind is more for Scuba Divers which requires a special boot (bootie), or for colder waters. Anyways, make sure that the fins are a good fit, or else you will either be cutting off circulation to your feet, or they will easily come off. Make sure that they are a snug fit, but you should be able to wiggle your toes.
