Be sure to visit the Seven Sacred Pools at Oheo Gulch in the Haleakala National Park, and don't miss the 2 hour rainforest hike from Hana to the impressive waterfalls. Iao Valley Iao Valley beauty has inspired Hawaiians to gather here to honor the agriculture god, Lono, during an annual festival called the Makahiki festival. For over a hundred years visitors have been coming to the valley to enjoy the scenic beauty of this lush valley. Oahu Hanauma Bay On Oahu, Hanauma Bay has a marine reef that is the top place for snorkeling anywhere on the island. There are more than 50 species of fish that make their home here, and you can see them up close when you scuba dive or snorkel at Hanauma Bay. Often, the bay is full of snorkelers, sometimes too many for additional divers to join. Shark's cove is a great alternative. There are underwater alcoves in the deeper inlet to the right of the cove where more adventurous divers can explore the natural beauty of the reef. Waikiki Beach Waikiki beach is located on the southern shores of Oahu. Since this place was frequented by the Hawaiian royalty during the 1800's, Waikiki has been a retreat for visitors looking for a relaxing shore. Kauai Na Pali Coast The name is this spectacular place is taken from the Hawaiian word Pali, which means cliffs. These deep gorges are caused by streams and waterfalls which continue to create crevasses into the ancient stone, which are further eroded by the waves of the sea .There are still remnants of terraces near the valley floor where Hawaiians used to cultivate the taro root. There is a challenging 11-mile hike on the Kalalau trail, which traverses 5 valleys before it ends at Kalalau beach. This hike can take a full day but will reward you with treks through verdant meadows and ocean side beaches. Waimea Canyon The Waimean Canyon is an incredible feast for the eyes. Situated on the west coast of Hawaii, the canyon is more than 3,500 feet deep, and more than 10 miles long. This canyon was created by the flooding from the rivers that flowed out of the Hawaii volcano Mount Waialeale. If you look at the canyon walls, you will see the lines that show traces of the geological activity that has taken place over the past thousands of years. There is lots of great hiking, with many different lookouts and vista points to take in the stunning beauty of this Canyon. If you're driving out here, make sure you have plenty of gas in your tank, as there are is not a single gas station on the 40 mile road. Lanai Lanai City Lanai is the smallest island of all the islands of Hawaii, and is known as the Pineapple Isle because over 90% of the island was used to cultivate pineapples. This is a great place to get away from it all, since there are only two major resorts on this island. You can get here easily from Maui on the Expeditions Lanai ferry. Monro Trail and the Luahiwa Petroglyphs Lanai is worth a visit while you're in the Hawaiian Islands. DLNR’s 2007 Budget Summary The Department of Land and Natural Resources (DLNR) is requesting $92-million for its operating budget for the next fiscal year (2007). The following summary provides some details on programs and initiatives DLNR will be able to undertake when the budget request is approved. DLNR’s budget is unprecedented in scope and scale and demonstrates Governor Lingle's commitment to protecting our natural and cultural resources for the benefit of future generations. History In 2002, DLNR’s budget was $60-million; DLNR is currently requesting $92-million · The requested amount is unprecedented in the history of DLNR · The difference represents an increase of over 50% over the 2002 budget · The difference represents an increase of over $15-million from this year’s budget Breakdown of $92-million budget request · General Funds - $29-million · Special Funds - $50-million · Federal Funds - $13-million How will DLNR's proposed budget be spent? DLNR’s budget represents an investment in improving the quality of life for the people of Hawaii and protection of our precious resources. Many of DLNR's priorities remain the same. However, DLNR will pursue some of its priorities with new tools and methods: Invasive Species · DLNR stands fast in protecting the resources and fighting Invasive Species is our number one priority because it is the single most-effective way to protect Hawaii’s natural resources · The proposal calls for continuation of DLNR’s multi-year, $4-million per year initiative · Key program goals: Prevention, Response & Control, Targeted Research and Outreach Parks Maintenance · DLNR is expanding on last year’s initiative that focuses on cleaning and repairing our State Parks facilities (Last year, DLNR asked for, and continues to receive, an added $977,000 to State Parks budget for needed cleaning and repairs.) · $486,000 is requested to be added to this increase so DLNR can expand, from semi-annually to semi-monthly, the power-washing, chemi-clean, steam-cleaning and sanitizing of the 85 statewide Parks restrooms Environmental Education · DLNR is requesting $1-million to support statewide environmental education programs · This will add to the already expanding program of making state land available for private operators to provide environmental education to Hawaii’s children. · Funds will be granted through an RFP process to environmental education providers across the state to enhance their existing environmental education programs. Parks - Harbors Security · DLNR is requesting $800,000 to place uniformed security personnel at State Parks and Harbors · Uniformed security personnel will be placed at 22 of our state parks and patrolling our harbors - they will curtail vandalism & break-ins, handle gates and by their presence will eliminate loitering and illegal activities · Presence serves as a deterrent to inappropriate behavior, provides assistance to and educates users, allows DLNR to monitor the resources and, ultimately, enhances protection of the resources and makes for a more enjoyable experience by all · DLNR enforcement officers spend approximately 40% of their time dealing with State Parks (15%) and Boating (25%) concerns · This program will free up time for DOCARE enforcement officers, allowing them to focus on natural and cultural resource concerns Stream Evaluation · DLNR is requesting $650,000 to work toward fulfillment of the State’s obligation to establish instream flow standards for Hawaii streams · Of the 376 perennial streams statewide, DLNR will evaluate the 1,242 stream diversions and will: o Perform field verification of stream diversions o Assess stream characteristics o Facilitate the determination of instream flow standards Watershed Protection · DLNR is requesting a $4.7-million increase in the spending natural area reserves and watershed protection. o $1.6-million will be used to protect Hawaii's natural area reserves – these serve to preserve and protect Hawaiian biological ecosystems and geological formations. o $2.6-million will focus on watershed resources and support the nine Watershed Partnerships that protect over 1-million acres of Hawaii’s forested watersheds. Aquatic Resources Protection · DLNR is requesting over $1.8-million in added spending to protect Hawaii’s aquatic resources and habitats. Land Acquisition · DLNR is requesting a $4-million in increased spending for land acquisition so the state may preserve and protect important natural and cultural resources. Capital Improvement Projects DLNR is requesting $72-million to make needed capital improvements across the state. This amount is unprecedented in scope and scale for DLNR. In North America it provides daily service to Hawaii from more cities than any other airline. A pioneer of Pacific aviation , Hawaiian Airlines was incorporated on January 30, 1929 under the name Inter-Island Airways Ltd. On November 11 that same year, thousands gathered at Honolulu's John Rodgers Airport to witness the departure of Hawaii's first scheduled interisland flights: Inter-Island's inaugural flights to Maui and the Big Island of Hawaii. Two eight-passenger Sikorsky S-38 amphibian planes thus began three weekly round trips between these destinations. The airline continued to modernize its fleet as aviation technology advanced. In 1935 larger, 16-passenger Sikorsky S-43s were added to accommodate increased traffic and newly authorized interisland airmail service. In 1941 Inter-Island changed its name to Hawaiian Airlines and introduced the 24-passenger DC-3 into Hawaiian skies. This "workhorse" of the piston era was the mainstay of the airline's fleet for many years. It became vital during wartime operations when all interisland traffic was placed under military control. Granted the very first air cargo certificate issued by the Civil Aeronautics Board, Hawaiian Airlines provided an aerial lifeline to Hawaii's Neighbor Islands during World War II. The advent of commercial jet service in the 1960s resulted in increased air traffic to and from Hawaii. Hawaiian grew to accommodate the travel needs of a growing residential population as well as an expanding visitor industry. In 1966 the airline brought to Hawaii its first pure jet interisland aircraft, the McDonnell Douglas DC-9. Travel time between the islands was reduced to a mere 20 to 30 minutes. The DC-9 remains the backbone of Hawaiian's mixed interisland fleet, Hawaii's best answer to the travel needs of residents and visitors alike. In 1984 Hawaiian began to provide worldwide charter services with three long-range DC-8 jets. Soon after, scheduled service began to Pago Pago, American Samoa and Nuku'alofa, Tonga. A year later Hawaiian acquired five Lockheed L-1011 widebody aircraft for scheduled and charter service. June 12, 1985 marked the inauguration of Hawaiian Airlines' scheduled widebody jet service between the West Coast and Hawaii with daily flights to Los Angeles. Daily flights between Hawaii and San Francisco and Seattle started in January, 1986. Service to Western Samoa soon followed. In 1987 Hawaiian expanded its South Pacific service by inaugurating flights to Tahiti, and Rarotonga in the Cook Islands. South Pacific service was scaled back in 1993 with the retirement of DC-8 aircraft used on these routes. In 1990 the international travel and hospitality publication Cond Nast Traveler rated Hawaiian Airlines one of the world's safest airlines. In an exclusive 20 year study (August 1990 issue), Cond Nast noted that Hawaiian was one of only five U.S. carriers, along with four with relatively short histories, that had never had an airfatality in their entire histories. Thirteen years later, Hawaiian's record of safety continues unbroken. In late 1993 Hawaiian Airlines entered into a series of marketing and services agreements with American Airlines' parent AMR Corporation. Consequently, Hawaiian in 1994 converted its reservations and operating computer system to American's SABRE system, became a participating carrier in American's AAdvantage Travel Awards program and replaced its entire widebody fleet of Lockheed L-1011 aircraft with DC-10 aircraft provided and maintained by American. In 2001 , Hawaiian began a comprehensive fleet modernization program with the delivery of 13 new Boeing 717-200 aircraft that would completely replace its DC-9 fleet that year. In 2002 and 2003, the company completed the program with the complete replacement of its widebody DC-10 fleet with 14 Boeing 767-300ER aircraft. Hawaiian Airlines' fleet is now among the youngest in the industry. Hawaiian has consistently been rated one of the "10 Best" U.S. airlines by readers of Conde Nast Traveler and Travel + Leisure for the past several years, has been the top U.S. airline for "Premium" class service by the Zagat Survey and most recently was rated fourth best domestic carrier in Travel + Leisure's 'Worlds's Best Awards.' In addition to a consistently high rating by discriminating travelers, Hawaiian's service has won several international honors. "Hawaiian Skies," the company's onboard video program highlighting the people and culture of Hawaii, earned a Bronze World Medal at the 42nd Annual New York International Film and Video Festival in 2000 as well as the Avion Award for excellence from the World Airline Entertainment Association (WAEA) in 1999. In 1998, Inside Flyer magazine rated HawaiianMiles, the company's frequent flyer program, one of the best in the world. In 1997, the International Inflight Food Service (IFSA) awarded Hawaiian its highest honor, the President's Award, for the company's Coach class service between the West Coast and Hawaii. The company had already won the coveted OnBoard Services Award for innovation and excellence in First Class service on West Coast-Hawaii flights. Hawaiian continues to build on an unbroken 74-year record of safety and to date has transported more than 130 million passengers. Hawaiian is the only airline able to provide single-carrier service from the Western U.S. and the South Pacific to each of Hawaii's islands. On board, passengers are surrounded with the gracious warmth unique to the people and culture of the Islands.
