Current update of the eruption of Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i `o Eruption Summary Hazards History Panorama Images Eruption Update and Image Archive | deformation | images | maps | Pu`u `O`o camera | 0555 January 14[Note: Your observer will be way south of the border, almost astraddle the equator, for the next two weeks. The next regularly scheduled morning update will be on Monday, January 30. Updates may occur at irregular intervals in the interim.]The Full Wolf Moon is the brightest object visible this morning, for lava on Pulama pali is confined to small patches and rivulets in the west string of breakouts. The breakouts reache from about the 1400-foot elevation down to about the 900-foot elevation, with small lava patches down to about 300 feet, as noted by yesterday's field workers. Glow comes from just above the top of the pali, probably at about the 1900-foot elevation, and testifies to surface lava there, too. Yesterday's observers noted some lava along the far east side of the PKK flow just outside the national park at about the 200-foot elevation 3.8 km from the end of the Kalapana access road.Moderate glow comes from East Lae`apuki this morning. Lava rose from cracks that cut the front half of the delta on Thursday and added perhaps as much as 80 m to the west side of the delta. The observers estimated that at least a third of the delta is new or resurfaced by lava. Lava enters the ocean at numerous spots along most of the front of the delta, so that the laze plume is spread almost continuously along the water's edge. The delta is now about 500 m long (parallel to shore) but still only 140 m wide. The crater of Pu`u `O`o is badly socked in this morning, but glimpses appear of all vents except Beehive. Conditions were similar yesterday, and the field observers were skunked. They did witness, however, a breakout from the PKK tube at the base of the flank shield. It was not active at 0900, was going strong at ~1030, and was over by 1130. The breakout came from a shatter ring immediately down-tube from the bend in the tube at the base of the flank shield. This shatter ring may be the source for all the breakouts from the upper tube that have occurred since mid-December. The shatter ring is 60 m x 75 m across, and its southwest side is a 3-4-m-high, nearly vertical rubble wall. This area was very noisy, with cracking and scraping and lots of rock falling off, both during and after the breakout. Background volcanic tremor is about normal at Kilauea's summit this morning. Volcanic tremor is at a moderate level at Pu`u `O`o.Inflation at Kilauea's summit continued for the past 24 hours and has now recovered the 5.2 microradians lost during the deflation of January 9-10. In contrast, Pu`u `O`o is having a rocky, slow deflation that started midday January 12 and by this writing has lost almost 1 microradian. Current Deformation Map of selected deformation stations Electronic Tiltmeter Pu`u `O`o experienced bumpy tilt on January 7, 8, and early January 9; the bumps average out to flat tilt. Uwekahuna inflated slightly until noon January 7, deflated in the afternoon, inflated until early January 8, and then flattened and stayed flat for most of the day. It then started to inflated before midnight and continued up until 2141 January 9. Then Uwekahuna started a rapid, large deflation that finally ended at 2345 January 10 after a loss of 5.2 microradians. Pu`u `O`o inflated during January 8, following Uwekahuna, but it did not plummet when the summit started to deflate, instead maintaining flat to gently declining tilt throughout January 10 and into the 11th. Kilauea's summit began to inflate steeply at 2345 January 10, ending the deflation. The inflation continued through January 11-12-13 and into January 14 and had recovered all the tilt lost by the January 9-10 deflation by early January 14. Pu`u `O`o had pretty flat tilt until about noon January 11 and then began a slow inflation that continued until late morning January 12. The tilt that more or less stabilized before dropping a little that night and through January 13 into January 14, though the deflation was very irregular. This graph shows the radial tilt at Uwekahuna (UWE), on the northwest rim of Kilauea's caldera, and at Pu`u `O`o cone (POC), on the northwest flank of the active vent along the east rift zone, as recorded by continuously operating electronic tiltmeters. Positive changes indicate inflation of the magma storage areas beneath the caldera or Pu`u `O`o. Data are shown for a one-week period. A long-term trend of constant-rate, large deflation at Pu`u `O`o used to be removed for scale reasons, but starting on May 24, 2002, the tilt is shown as recorded, including the long-term deflation. The graph is refreshed at the same time as the eruption update at the top of this page, usually daily. The Y-axis is in microradians, an angular measure in parts per million; for example, one microradian represents the tilt of a 1-km-long bar, one end of which is lifted up or down 1 mm. Global Positioning System (GPS) Two years of data are shown in the plot. Between June 2003 and July 2004 the lengthening between the two stations was generally at a gradually increasing rate. The distance then became stable for nearly a month, but then extension resumed at a slightly slower rate than before the brief stable period. Extension picked up significantly in December 2004 and continued to lengthen rapidly until late February 2005. Then the line rather abruptly started to contract. The contraction ended in mid-March 2005, and the line remained steady until early May, when it began to lengthen once more. The lengthening continued until early July 2005, when the distance stabilized, coincident with a flattening of the tilt at Uwekahuna. Extension then resumed at a quickened rate in late July-early August 2005 and continued to late September. Then the rate of lengthening sharply reduced and perhaps even became zero for a time. Then, in November 2005, the line began to lengthen once more, only to stabilize once more at the end of the year. This graph shows the change in distance between two Global Positioning System (GPS) stations located on opposite ides of Kilauea's caldera. A rapid increase in distance can be interpreted as inflation of the summit magma reservoir. The graph is refreshed at the same time as the eruption update at the top of this page, usually daily. Yellow, brown, and red colors indicate lava flows erupted from October 2003 to December 16, 2005. Yellow indicates the currently active Kuhio (PKK) flow, active most of the time from March 20, 2004 to the present. The east and west arms of the PKK flow, once widely separated, began to merge and overlap on the coastal flat in March 2005. The east arm feeds the East Lae`apuki ocean entry. Activity on the west arm declined through mid-August, and the last surface flow on that arm was observed on August 21. The recent (November-December 2005) breakouts on Pulama pali described as "eastern" and "western" are all on the east arm of the PKK flow. The brown shade denotes Martin Luther King (MLK ) flows, which first erupted in January 2004 from flank vents on the south slope of Pu`u `O`o. Since then, several more vents have formed in the MLK area and continue to erupt intermittently. Red indicates the Mother's Day and Banana flows, last active in September 2004. Short flows from the crater, West Gap, and Puka Nui vents are also shown in red. In recent months, only the Puka Nui vent has produced infrequent, small flows. The vents, lava tubes, and flows active in 2005 include the numbered vents in the crater, the MLK vent complex and associated flows, the Puka Nui vent, and the upper Kuhio (PKK) tube, which feeds the lava flows eventually reaching the ocean. Such is the case with Hawaiian quilts. In the early 19th century, New England missionaries set out to Hawaii to spread the Christian word. In the process, they also taught the island natives the technique of quilting. The History of Hawaiian Quilts Hawaiian quilts have adapted over time and are now recognized by their subject matter. They typically reflect the stunning tropical flowers native to the islands or commemorate an event. Rather than using small, patchwork pieces, Hawaiian quilts are made with large pieces of brightly colored material, which are fastened onto a light-colored, solid background piece. The Hawaiian quilting tradition incorporates a fair amount of superstition and custom. For instance, it is considered impolite to sit on a Hawaiian quilt. The quilt is a reflection of the quilt maker and to sit on it implies disrespect. A quilt is always folded back or hung on a quilt rack before anyone sits upon or lies in a bed. There are many examples of Hawaiian quilts on the Internet. You can choose from a variety of block patterns or become inspired by the photos to create your own personal design. The rooms were a little bit worn but we had a oceanfront view which was gorgeous. From our balcony, we could look down into the tidal pools and watch turtles & fish of all varieties. It was like a view you would get when snorkeling. The snorkeling beach next door is public and a little crowded but the snorkeling is one of the best on the island. You can swim with the turtles (but don't touch or bother them in any way!!. Remember these are not sand beaches. The pool area was very nice, but not large & fancy.There is no hot tub. Like all pool areas there was a shortage of lounges. Get there early and save one with a towel, then go get breakfast. They have a great breakfast buffet. Ours was included in our package. The bar/lounge was very nice with great staff and also had a great view of the turtles. There is a nice activity desk (Expedia)with helpful people. We had dinner at the resortone night which was good. All the prices are typical resort prices. They also had a very nice gift shop. The beach/pool restaurant and bar is also very nice. They charge $5/day parking which we didn't like. They will valet for you but then you need to tip as well as pay the $5, But that's what we did just for the convenience and because we were on vacation. We really liked the place!! Just returned from 8 days at OKBR. If you're not finicky, there is good value here. Like others who have posted, the place could use a little "umpf" But since you're gone most of the day does it really matter what color the paint, or condition of the carpet ? Our room was more than adequate with coffee maker, refrigerator, clothes iron, security safe, lanai, big shower. We shopped before booking and figured we saved over $60 per day and got more amenities. Our standard garden view still had an ocean view without paying the upgrade, plus received the 5th night for free. The Kama'aina Terrace restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet, worth the $13.95. We only ate one dinner here, Fridays prime rib-seafood dinner buffet. At $34.95 it was only so-so. Most regular dinner prices run $18 to $35. Bar drinks run $8.00, do your own in-room. I can recommend lunch at the Kalanikai Grill. Good burgers or fish and chips at $8.00 in an ocean side setting. There is a mall within a mile of here that has fast food and grocery stores. Buy your pop, booze, and munchies and eat in room. Look around for other dining options. Tennis courts, swimming pool, and exercise room available. Next door to the resort is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Go to Snorkel Bobs on Alii Dr. to rent your gear for $9.00/week. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone. However, our room (#645) was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. Carpeting should be clean so that I can walk comfortably barefooted. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked one day and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. Maid service was poor two times: Left used glasses on the table and left used towels in the bathroom floor, yet they took the other used towels. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sunset and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. Nightly entertainment was quite enjoyable. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Also, Kahaluu beach, next to the hotel, is the BEST place for snorkeling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, Moorish idols, triggerfish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi! An internet cafe is there too. Overall we did enjoy our stay, but again, would like to see the place upgraded. Maybe there are other rooms that are refurbished. Ask before you book. One last thought: We spent five nights there. I think the next time we will book a condo like we did when we visited Kauai. This way we could have a kitchen to cook our breakfast and have a more comfortable place to stay. We stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort for 5 days in October. It is such a beautiful hotel in such a fabulous location. We had an Ocean View room which overlooked the beach, pool and on towards Kona Bay. The staff and service was wonderful. The hotel is begining to show its age but is still well maintained and very clean. On our last night there, the A/C went out on us. My friend when down to the front desk to report the problem and the maintenence man beat him back to the room. The problem was taken care of in about 30 minutes. Because we stayed 5 nights, we were intitled to the Breakfast Buffet and it's fabulous. They had every fruit you could want and then some. Eggs fixed several different ways, french toast and pancakes or waffles. Bacon and sausage as well as hash browns and potatoes fixed in some other ways. Each day there was several different things added in to make it interesting. For lunch, we were usually off sightseeing and ate wherever we were. Do to the high cost of food at most hotels, we found some wonderful places near the hotel. There is a Wendy's just up the hill. Just beyond that, there is a lovely mall that has Drysdales II, a fun restaurant with a neverending menu. We ate there twice. In the same mall we found a great little Mexican restaurant. It is small but there are tables inside and outside. The service is fast and the food is unbelievable. We ate there twice also. Next to that, all in a row, there is a Thai restaurant, a Subway in cast you just need a deli fix. These places were much less expensive than hotels and gourmet type restaurants if you are traveling on a budget. In the middle of this Mall, there is a small courtyard where they have intertainment several nights a week. All are FREE. We got lucky and saw a wonderful Hula show on Friday night and on Saturday, there was a Dixieland band for an hour then a wonderfully crazy band that played fiddles, washboards, accordions, base etc. Everyone was up dancing and clapping and carrying on. What fun. The Keauhou Beach Resort is a wonderful place to stay. Away from the noise of a town but close enough to visit as often as you want to. Will I stay there again? You bet I will. The Outrigger Hotel was booked by anagency for us. It was a surprise to realize that the hotel was located in the southwestern side of the island and not in the northwest. The NW, where the Hilton and the Marriott are located, we found to be quite warm, arid and moon-like! The SW was quite pleasant, tropical and lush. We were blessed for the location of this hotel. The staff was quite polite and accommodating. The food was excellent. The tranquility of the whole place is priceless. The views of the tropical surrounding, the ocean, and the sunsets are unforgettable. The only issue with the hotel is its old carpeting that is planned to be renovated soon. In spite of its age, built in the 70s, the hotel is quite charming and comfortable. Its location from Kona and other attractive places is just perfect. Having a car is a must! We enjoyed snorkeling and swimming using the public sandy beaches accessible within walking distance from the hotel. In spite of having its own sandy beaches it offers many tide pools to enjoy the marine life. We also found the abundance of the sea turtles quite amusing and relaxing in these tide pools and the beaches. For eating, we found a variety of restaurants in Kona and a shopping center up the hill from the hotel driving south on Alii Drive. We definitely stay at this hotel again, as it offers unexpected values to enjoy our vacations.
