Needlework isn't just the realm of women, as a new exhibit of quilts at the Mission Houses Museum demonstrates By Burl Burlingame Star-Bulletin NOW that women can captain B-52s -- and can get cashiered out of the service for being as dumb as a man -- is it any surprise that men are sewing quilts? Some of the best of local man-made quilts go on display tomorrow at the Mission Houses Museum in a show called "Na Kapa Kuiki Hawai'i Na Ka Lima Kane (Hawaiian Quilts by Men's Hands)." Hawaiian quilting as a folk-art tradition began with the thrifty missionaries recycling scraps of cloth, and eventually became a way for women to express themselves artistically. Quilting can be done either as a solitary activity or with many hands helping simultaneously. Anselm Lum, 82, always liked doing needlepoint and needlework to keep his fingers busy, and enjoyed "art day" at Central Grammar School when the kids turned flour sacks into decorative hand towels using basic cross-stitching. He eventually became a carpenter and a school construction inspector. By Craig T. When wife Helen took a class in Hawaiian quilting in the 1970s, Lum picked up an unfinished project and finished it. Since then, he figures he's spent 13,000 hours quilting, usually while Helen worked in the evenings. "It's just therapy for me," he said. "I'm retired, so I only work mornings. I don't want to be a couch potato! And there's nothing on TV to watch anyways." Lum's designs are traditional -- "I'm not trying to influence anyone!" -- and he figures the only method he uses that's different is the old carpenter's dictum to measure twice, cut once. "I do a lot of measurements. Some quilters do it by eye. Not me. I plot mine out." Stan Yates, 51, a government expert on disabilities on Kauai, was "blown away" by the beauty and precise construction of Hawaiian quilts, and devoured every book he could find on the subject in the Lihue library. He began quilting in 1986, and by 1988 won a blue ribbon at the Kauai County Fair for a baby quilt design. He likes making quilts in which the positive and negative spaces are interlocked, like a Escher print, and in his spare time demonstrates quilting techniques at Kauai hotels. By Craig T. Younger quilters include Kimo Balai, 45, a lineman for the Hawaii Electric Light Company who lives in Kamuela, Hawaii, and Lincoln Okita, 46, a Honolulu probation officer. Balai's wife Sharon joined Ka Hui Kapa 'Apana O Waimea, a Big Island quilting group, in 1985, and Balai began paying dues so that he could partake in the refreshments brought by the women (the way to a man's hands is through his stomach?). A few years later, he became interested enough to learn, and since then has completed three quiltS. His first, called "Mai Poina 'Oe I'au (Don't You Forget Me)" was designed by Sharon to remind him that he is always on his busy wife's mind. Okita began quilting in 1981, also as a husband-wife activity, when he and wife Jo Malmstrom-Okita were living on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota, and they became determined to make a Sioux star-quilt together for their bed. Okita began Hawaiian quilting in 1990 after seeing Elizabeth Akana's TV show about Hawaiian quilting techniques. The precise stitching and obvious progress at the end of each session allows the quilter to get into a Zen zone of concentration, like a meditative state. "Quilting is my stress-reducer and provides me with a sense of concrete accomplishment that you usually don't get from social work," said Okita. By Craig T. If you go, you'll want to check it out more than once; there are quite a few intriguing entries on the menu board. I recommending starting with the 9-inch pizza with your choice of three toppings for under eight bucks. The crust is the highlight here--it's thin and crisp; almost cracker-like. The food here is rather carefully and lovingly made, and that's a huge, huge plus in my book. There are quite a few vegetarian items on the menu, of which the hummus is probably best. The 'net connection is sometimes quite pleasingly fast; often, it's a little slow. Still, it's free, and your fountain drink is bottomless, so it's easy to slide into cruising mode and surf at in leisure-mode. The endless parade of college lovelies doesn't hurt, either. :) My other favorite wireless hangout is Coffee Talk, but parking in the municipal lot in Kaimuki has gone up to $.75 an hour (up from four bits), which is still pretty cheap, but there's a reason I can't pay my ISP bill just yet; there's no way I can swing coffee AND parking! Trips up Hanalei Valley, a place that hasn't changed much in the past one thousand years. Other trails take you to Haupu Valley, along the beach and past the coves of Mahaulepu Beach, or down into Waimea Canyon, known as the 'Grand Canyon of the Pacific.' Go to Stables FISHING Kauai is a popular spot for both freshwater and saltwater anglers. Large- and smallmouth bass are taken in Kauai's inland reservoirs. Marlin, ahi, ono, and aku are found in abundance off Kauai's south and east coasts. There also are special charters available that will carry you near the private island of Niihau for giant tuna and marlin. Go to Fishing HIKING Photo by: Kayak Kauai About 10 percent of Kauai is accessible by road. That's great news if you enjoy hiking, because it means there's a lot of island out there waiting to be explored on foot. Of course, before you set out you'll need to know where you're going. Write to the Hawaii Geographic Society, P.O. Box 1698, Honolulu, HI 96806, and ask for their information packet. A good book on the subject, Hawaiian Hiking Trails, by Craig Chisholm, offers trail descriptions by someone who has been there. You can also contact the Sierra Club, Kauai Group at http://www.hi.sierraclub.org/Kauai/kauai.html . Any of the above will prove helpful to your planning. Good maps are also necessary. The University of Hawaii Press Reference Map of Kauai is available from the Hawaii Geographic Society and at bookstores on Kauai. Maps may also be obtained from the State Division of Forestry, P.O. Box 1671, Lihue, Kauai, HI 96766. Three of Kauai's best trails: The Kukui Trail This 5-mile (round trip) trail drops 2,000 feet into spectacular Waimea Canyon, and offers the shortest route to the canyon floor. There's a large swimming hole at the bottom. The trail begins off the Iliau Loop Trail. The Kuilau Ridge Trail This 4.2-mile (round trip) hike offers dramatic views of small waterfalls and a wealth of flora. The trailhead is about a mile beyond the University of Hawaii Agricultural Experimental Station on Route 580. The Kalalau Trail This is the original Hawaiian trail into Kalalau Valley, and offers dramatic views of Na Pali Coast and Kee Beach. It begins at Kee Beach where Highway 56 ends. Two miles inland is Hanakapiai Falls, which cascades 300 feet to a pool below. The trail travels on to Kalalau Valley, and many hikers camp overnight at Hanakapiai and before continuing on the next day. The entire trip is best made by experienced hikers. Go to Land Activities WINDSURFING Anini Beach Park and Kalapaki Beach are both good places for windsurfing, especially Anini Beach because it said to have more consistent wind. On the south coast, Poipu Beach is also an excellent choice. For the more advanced, Haena Beach on the north shore is a great spot. Go to Water Activities SCUBA DIVING Photo by: Kayak Kauai The best diving on Kauai is found along the southern shore because waters are calmer. The water is clear, with visibility averaging about 50 feet, and sea life is abundant. Go to Water Activities CAMPING Photo by: Kayak Kauai Kauai's county and state parks are ideal for camping. Both require permits. Permits for camping at county parks are issued for seven days, and enable you to camp in one location for seven consecutive days - and a total of up to 60 days at all county parks. Permits cost $3 per person per night, with children under 18 free. State park permits are free, and allow camping for five consecutive days. It is suggested that permits for state and county parks be requested up to one year in advance of arrival, especially for popular areas such as the Na Pali coast and Kokee. For other areas, try approximately one month in advance for the winter and six months in advance for the summer. The State Division of Forestry also offers camping permits for sites in the forest reserves.
