The rooms were a little bit worn but we had a oceanfront view which was gorgeous. From our balcony, we could look down into the tidal pools and watch turtles & fish of all varieties. It was like a view you would get when snorkeling. The snorkeling beach next door is public and a little crowded but the snorkeling is one of the best on the island. You can swim with the turtles (but don't touch or bother them in any way!!. Remember these are not sand beaches. The pool area was very nice, but not large & fancy.There is no hot tub. Like all pool areas there was a shortage of lounges. Get there early and save one with a towel, then go get breakfast. They have a great breakfast buffet. Ours was included in our package. The bar/lounge was very nice with great staff and also had a great view of the turtles. There is a nice activity desk (Expedia)with helpful people. We had dinner at the resortone night which was good. All the prices are typical resort prices. They also had a very nice gift shop. The beach/pool restaurant and bar is also very nice. They charge $5/day parking which we didn't like. They will valet for you but then you need to tip as well as pay the $5, But that's what we did just for the convenience and because we were on vacation. We really liked the place!! Just returned from 8 days at OKBR. If you're not finicky, there is good value here. Like others who have posted, the place could use a little "umpf" But since you're gone most of the day does it really matter what color the paint, or condition of the carpet ? Our room was more than adequate with coffee maker, refrigerator, clothes iron, security safe, lanai, big shower. We shopped before booking and figured we saved over $60 per day and got more amenities. Our standard garden view still had an ocean view without paying the upgrade, plus received the 5th night for free. The Kama'aina Terrace restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet, worth the $13.95. We only ate one dinner here, Fridays prime rib-seafood dinner buffet. At $34.95 it was only so-so. Most regular dinner prices run $18 to $35. Bar drinks run $8.00, do your own in-room. I can recommend lunch at the Kalanikai Grill. Good burgers or fish and chips at $8.00 in an ocean side setting. There is a mall within a mile of here that has fast food and grocery stores. Buy your pop, booze, and munchies and eat in room. Look around for other dining options. Tennis courts, swimming pool, and exercise room available. Next door to the resort is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Go to Snorkel Bobs on Alii Dr. to rent your gear for $9.00/week. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone. However, our room (#645) was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. Carpeting should be clean so that I can walk comfortably barefooted. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked one day and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. Maid service was poor two times: Left used glasses on the table and left used towels in the bathroom floor, yet they took the other used towels. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sunset and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. Nightly entertainment was quite enjoyable. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Also, Kahaluu beach, next to the hotel, is the BEST place for snorkeling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, Moorish idols, triggerfish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi! An internet cafe is there too. Overall we did enjoy our stay, but again, would like to see the place upgraded. Maybe there are other rooms that are refurbished. Ask before you book. One last thought: We spent five nights there. I think the next time we will book a condo like we did when we visited Kauai. This way we could have a kitchen to cook our breakfast and have a more comfortable place to stay. We stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort for 5 days in October. It is such a beautiful hotel in such a fabulous location. We had an Ocean View room which overlooked the beach, pool and on towards Kona Bay. The staff and service was wonderful. The hotel is begining to show its age but is still well maintained and very clean. On our last night there, the A/C went out on us. My friend when down to the front desk to report the problem and the maintenence man beat him back to the room. The problem was taken care of in about 30 minutes. Because we stayed 5 nights, we were intitled to the Breakfast Buffet and it's fabulous. They had every fruit you could want and then some. Eggs fixed several different ways, french toast and pancakes or waffles. Bacon and sausage as well as hash browns and potatoes fixed in some other ways. Each day there was several different things added in to make it interesting. For lunch, we were usually off sightseeing and ate wherever we were. Do to the high cost of food at most hotels, we found some wonderful places near the hotel. There is a Wendy's just up the hill. Just beyond that, there is a lovely mall that has Drysdales II, a fun restaurant with a neverending menu. We ate there twice. In the same mall we found a great little Mexican restaurant. It is small but there are tables inside and outside. The service is fast and the food is unbelievable. We ate there twice also. Next to that, all in a row, there is a Thai restaurant, a Subway in cast you just need a deli fix. These places were much less expensive than hotels and gourmet type restaurants if you are traveling on a budget. In the middle of this Mall, there is a small courtyard where they have intertainment several nights a week. All are FREE. We got lucky and saw a wonderful Hula show on Friday night and on Saturday, there was a Dixieland band for an hour then a wonderfully crazy band that played fiddles, washboards, accordions, base etc. Everyone was up dancing and clapping and carrying on. What fun. The Keauhou Beach Resort is a wonderful place to stay. Away from the noise of a town but close enough to visit as often as you want to. Will I stay there again? You bet I will. The Outrigger Hotel was booked by anagency for us. It was a surprise to realize that the hotel was located in the southwestern side of the island and not in the northwest. The NW, where the Hilton and the Marriott are located, we found to be quite warm, arid and moon-like! The SW was quite pleasant, tropical and lush. We were blessed for the location of this hotel. The staff was quite polite and accommodating. The food was excellent. The tranquility of the whole place is priceless. The views of the tropical surrounding, the ocean, and the sunsets are unforgettable. The only issue with the hotel is its old carpeting that is planned to be renovated soon. In spite of its age, built in the 70s, the hotel is quite charming and comfortable. Its location from Kona and other attractive places is just perfect. Having a car is a must! We enjoyed snorkeling and swimming using the public sandy beaches accessible within walking distance from the hotel. In spite of having its own sandy beaches it offers many tide pools to enjoy the marine life. We also found the abundance of the sea turtles quite amusing and relaxing in these tide pools and the beaches. For eating, we found a variety of restaurants in Kona and a shopping center up the hill from the hotel driving south on Alii Drive. We definitely stay at this hotel again, as it offers unexpected values to enjoy our vacations. The Monster Sea-Based X-Band Radar Dome you may have read or heard about is at Pearl Harbor. It arrived for a paint job last week. it caused quite a stir as it came into view from around Diamond Head unannounced last Monday. I saw it last Tuesday from atop Aiea Heights and wandered down to get closer and ended up down near the Arizona Memorial Museum. It's home port is Adak, Alaska and it will keep the western skies under surveillance when it goes into operations in the Aleutians soon. From a church parking lot you can see this large dome thing is docked down at Pearl. I got down closer to the X-Band and you can see it is loaded atop the 736-foot semisubmersible ship M/V Blue Marlin. I took this shot from the launch ramp down by the Arizona Memorial Museum. The USS Missouri and the Arizona Memorial from the lawn at the Arizona Museum. The new Ford Island Bridge from the lawn of the Museum. Carol Schaub writes: I'm so sorry to hear that the station is in need again. Frankly, I don't understand the thinking of some of your listeners. The same people who wouldn't blink at spending $3.50 or more daily on a specialty coffee, can't seem to come up with a piddling donation of $25 a month to support the music that gives them so much pleasure. Even if they listen only twice a week, it comes out to a contribution of a mere $3 and change each time they listen. Now we both know that most people listen much more often than that – so it's even cheaper, especially when you consider all the hours that they listen. In any case, I'd like to contribute double my usual this month, and to thank you once again for all you do so that we, your listeners, may experience a piece, and the peace, of the islands. And having been a supporter of IRH for years continuously, I feel I have a certain right to respond to the matter in question. , Listeners are being urged to donate in order to keep IRH alive and running without you having to beg and plead each month to help out. That being said, by offering 'free' access in the beginning, until IRH had grown to an overwhelming audience of such proportions that it became evident that help was needed in the way of monthly donations. It thus became an absolute necessity in order for IRH to live on because of its own success. Consequently, listeners such as "Joel" are unfortunately just one of many of hundreds if not thousands, of cheapskates that think it is their god given right to take and not give in return just because something is there for the taking. What they don't understand is, is that it is not there for the taking, but for the enjoyment. The listening enjoyment of having a piece of Hawaii there within arms reach . A piece of Hawaii that a guy by the name of Robert Abbett provides for each and every one of us. For those of us who have been to Hawaii one time or many many times, it is a way to re-connect back to that little piece of heaven on Earth. For those who have never been there and only wish they could be, it is a way for them to be there without having to actually be there bodily but in spirit. In any event, the 'little radio station that could', from a house in Kailua Hawaii, needs all our support. If you don't believe it, turn it off and go put on your FM radio and listen to some BS music and a bunch of nonsense commercials for awhile. Maybe then you'll realize how much having Internet Radio Hawaii means to us all. Ron & Madeline Wilson Valrico, Florida Da Mokes, or more properly the Mokulua islands sit off of Lanikai beach. The island to the left is Moku Nui. To the right is Moku Iki. Both are bird conservation areas. You may land and visit the beach on Moku Nui during the day but you are not supposed to land at all on Moku Iki. Landing on and paddling out from Moku Nui can be very tricky and in fact deadly. Waves from both sides of the island wrap around the front and slap together as you make your approach. As happened on Monday 12-05-05 one can be swamped or turtled coming off the beach. I know who this person is and I have spoken with roadrunner and some other folks about it. Should you ever get an email other than a personal thank you for your donation or an answer to a question, or a listener page update from irh.com or one of my other addresses then you can be sure it is not from here nor from me. We are currently being included as an "advertiser" via a link on the bottom of someone else's spam without my permission or previous knowledge. This person is a disgruntled wanna-be-partner who approached me several years ago about partnering up but never got it together (Thank God!). He also sends me $20 bills every once in a while and asks if I am still mad about all the wasted time and energy he caused. I always just mail the twenties back. I sent back his most recent $20 a few months ago and asked that he not call, write or even think of doing either ever again and this is apparently how he responds. The following Tuesday was very hard for me. Every time I walked through the kitchen ( where Zig lived under the table) or through the big room where she hung out sprawled across the cool tile floor, I missed her terribly. My friend is no where to be seen. I'm crushed. I am so very much alone. Ziggy passed on over the rainbow at around 1 pm HST Monday afternoon at home in her bed under the careful hands and watchful eyes of her vet, an assistant and yours truly. I held her head in my hands and told her how good she was and how much I loved her, over and over. Ziggy was an angel in the body of a female white shepherd who kidnapped all our hearts and quickly became a member of our family. She was 13. Strangely enough, after glancing through her records it appeared that our first visit to the Vet was on Christmas Eve, 1990 and she was listed as being six weeks old. So although I don't remember the date because I wasn't there, she was born right around this part of the month of November. Ziggy was one of the smartest animals I have ever known. She learned tricks and how to use dog doors with ease and loved to play ball! She could catch incredible bounces and when younger would play and chase the darn thing for hours on end. She was obedient to a fault. She would come over and console us when we were down and had an amazing smile that would brighten any gray day. She was a great guard dog but did not just go outside and bark for the sake of barking. She came on command, she came with hand signals, she came to me sometimes with just a thought. Ziggy was a bit annoyed by our recent construction and hated the thumping noises most. She'd often retreat to the quiet of the bathroom in the old house but, she greeted all the carpenters every day with a wag, a sniff and a lick. I'm so glad she got to enjoy the big new room downstairs. I'm sorry she wasn't capable of making it up the 14 steps to the new studio. She would have dug it. I swear, she liked Hawaiian music. I left a radio on all the time in the new bathroom downstairs and I caught her groovin' on more than one occassion. You could tell. It was that special look on her face. Sheer bliss. She really liked Gabby and would react with recognition whenever she heard me rattling on about something or doing a promo. Ziggy went over the rainbow with dignity and class and a full belly of her favorite rawhide treats, a freshly brushed coat of gleaming white fur and a flood of love from a several hour petting and hangin' out session we enjoyed Monday. We also played drop catch with the ball and she never missed, even through pretty heavy cataracts. Dr. Caspar, who she greeted by jumpin' up and wobblin' over to and then licking excitedly, said she also apparently was beginning to suffer liver malfunction as her belly was filled with liquid. That made me feel better about my decision and bad too because maybe I should have done something last week. It was, without a doubt, the hardest decision I have ever made in my life. I agonized over it for the past couple months but finally, Monday with her condition deteriorating rapidly, I decided to call in the Vet. I did this for my dearest and very very best friend who was having real problems with advanced arthritis in her back legs and was hardly able to get around anymore. We exhausted all the heroics - pain pills, pain receptor inhibitors, powder and liquid glucosamines, steroids and prayers. Ziggy resting in the garage early Monday by her Big Water. My Mom and I talked Monday - (she is the dog queen and has a couple grand champions to her credit!) and she mentioned that there is a point where the human tends to go too far to keep the dog around. I didn't want to do that to her and as it turned out what with the liver disfunction and all I guess our timing was bless-ed. We love You Ziggy! We always will. We hope to play with you again one day on the other side of the rainbow.
