I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them. The Bottom Line Hawaaian Volcanoes National Park is a 'must see' on the big island. Full Review Hawaii, one of the rare places where you can you see a volcano in a national park!!! We took the helicopter ride over the ring of fire and then went on down tothe local park to get another look!! Anywhere else in the world where there is a volcano, people run, but in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park they flock to see it. This park has existed since 1916, surrounding Kilauea Caldero and Mauna Loa, and is one of the worlds most active volcanic areas. This park is located on the big island of Hawaii, on the southeastern coast. We drove there from Hilo and it took about 30-45 minutes. The park is open 24 hours a day and there are trails that you can take and even camp on. The main road of the park begins near Kilauea Caldero and goes down to the coast. There is a visitor center and it contains maps and information on the trails. It also issues permits. There are some picnic areas. The park is close enough to Highway 11 to provide access to get gas. However, if you have car problems, you're out of luck since there is nothing else within 21 miles. The visitor center is open 7:45 AM through 5 PM. Elevations within the park range from sea level to about 14,000 feet and it can get pretty cool in certain places. We were glad someone we knew, who had been there, suggested taking jeans and sweatshirts!! Its also not unusual for a shower to come up unexpectedly. We stood at the edge of a trail, looking out over the fields leading to one of the craters and watched a rainline move toward us very fast!! There is also a museum, several miles from the visitor center, which provides films of past eruptions. You can also purchase videos of past eruptions. They have overlooks to view both craters. This center is open from 8:30-5 PM daily. You can explore many of the areas around the volcano by foot, at your own risk of course. There are signs which tell you that people have walked in and never been seen again so we elected not to do that!! Hikers are required to register. Since we only spent a day and a half on the "big island", and only had part of it at the park, we didnt get to see a lot of it and I have a feeling we could have spent lots of time here. However, the volcano was pretty quiet while we were there (much to our disappointment), so it gave us a feeling of not missing too, too much. However, that is not to diminish the awesome experience of being in the presence of one of God's wonders, the volcano. Knowing it could erupt anytime was exciting. And we did get to see some great views of lava flows and hot spots, fire pools, etc. The helicopter ride over the park and flying over the 'ring of fire' was truly awesome. Thus they are more visitor friendly, if you will. Molokai, Hawaii - History and Culture on The Most Hawaiian Island. One and a half million years ago (give or take a week) two large volcanoes pushed through the surface of the Pacific Ocean and created the island of Molokai. Kamakou in the east, and Maunaloa in the west. A couple days later a third and much smaller caldera, Kauhako, popped up to form the Makanalua peninsula on the north side. Over eons, the north side of the island eroded and fell into the sea, leaving behind the vertical sea cliffs which today make up most of Molokai's spectacular North Shore. It's the fifth largest island in the Hawaiian archipelago; 260 square miles (420 sq km) in area, 38 miles (61km) long, and ten miles (16km) wide at its widest point. Anchored in the center of the 8 major islands, Molokai is 25 miles (40km) southeast of Oahu, and a 25-minute flight from Maui. From the eastern end of the island, it's only 8 miles (13km) across the Pailolo Channel to Maui. The population is estimated at 8,000 residents, half of whom live in or near the principal town of Kaunakakai. Nearly 40% are of Hawaiian descent, thus the nick name, "The Most Hawaiian Island." According to the experts, Hawaiians first came to live on Molokai about 650 A.D. Those first settlers most likely originated from the Marquesas, with later migrations, in double hulled canoes, from Tahiti and other areas in the South Pacific. As the Hawaiians had no written language, most of their pre-contact history has come from chants, passed down from generation to generation, which have kept a chronology of events, battles and genealogy. In November, 1778, Captain James Cook sighted Molokai on his first visit to the Sandwich Islands, as he named these islands, but it wasn't until 1786 when Captain George Dixon anchored off Molokai's coast, that Europeans first visited this island. In 1832 a Protestant mission was established at Kalua'aha on the East End by Reverend Harvey Hitchcock, to serve an estimated population of 5,000. His church has not been maintained, but the walls and part of the roof stand today at the 14.5 mile marker. A white marble headstone marks his grave on the hill east of what remains of the church. The oldest known Hawaiian settlement on Molokai occurred in Halawa Valley, at the eastern end of the main highway that crosses the length of the island. The eastern side of the island was heavily populated in pre-contact Hawaii, a result of ample water from the mountains, fertile and level land for farming, and a rich and abundant ocean. More than 60 fish ponds were built along the south shore of Molokai. Most have nearly disappeared, but a few have been reconstructed and are used daily by residents for aquiculture. A drive along the southshore of the island bears testimony to the reliance on the ocean by early Hawaiians. Molokai was renowned for the wisdom and power of its religious leaders, greatly respected and often feared by others in the archipelago. In the 1500s, the famous prophet, Lanikaula, was so revered that pilgrims came from all the Islands to seek his wisdom and advice. Molokai became a place of retreat, protected from war by its religious prestige and the marital alliances of its chiefs. Others were reputed for sorcery. Legend tells of the Kalaipahoa, or poisonwood gods, entering trees on Maunaloa. The grove is said to have been so poisonous that birds fell dead as they flew over it. Legend also tells us that Laka, goddess of the hula, gave birth to the dance on Molokai, at a very sacred place in Ka'ana. This is recognized on Molokai every May, at a celebration of the birth of hula, called Ka Hula Piko. When Laka died, her remains were secretly hidden somewhere beneath the hill, Pu'u Nana. The hula was finally established, the work of Laka was complete, and the dance flourishedthroughout Hawaii. Molokai was praised as "Molokai Ka Hula Piko," Molokai, the center of the dance. This design, by John Kaimikaua and Wainwright Piena, uses traditional Hawaiian motifs to depict the essence of the saying, "Molokai Ka Hula Piko." To the early Hawaiians the mo'o (lizards) were a symbol of spirituality and good fortune. The central design depicts this spiritual continuity with the mo'o arranged in a circle. The triangle depicts a Hawaiian value called "Lokahi," which is symbolic of a balance between man, nature, and God. Petroglyphs within the triangle portray a man and woman in dance. In the uppermost part of the triangle is a rising sun with a dot in the center symbolizing the piko of the hula. Beneath the circle is a motif depicting water, while at the top, the triangles represent fire. In the real world, water and fire are the two elements that cannot be mixed, but the spiritual essence of these elements mix in the hula. The ancient kumu hula of Molokai stressed to their students that they should dance with the fluidity of water and with the spark of fire. The middle row of diamonds, is a design called by the Hawaiians "na maka ke akua," or "eyes ofthe gods." Eyes are symbolic of the past, because our ancestors look upon us and guide us in thislife. Eyes also represent the living, as we look back upon the paths of our ancestors for inspirationand guidance. The hula provides a means for us to look back to the works of our ancestors through its movements, motions and chants. Above the "na maka ke akua" design are ferns representing the greenery worn by the dancers and below is the half-circle-point motif representing the rays of the sun rising in the east. To the early Hawaiians, the rising sun was symbolic of constant renewal and rebirth in the hula.
