Hawaii Volcano, Mauna Loa Volcano, Kilauea Volcano, Volcano House Hotel, Home > Destinations > North America > United States > Hawaii > Big Island > Halema Uma U Crater Halema Uma U Crater Hawaii Volcanoes National Park is the state's premier natural attraction, containing tow of the most active volcanoes in the world, Kilauea and Mauna Loa. The park extends for 377 miles from the 13,777-foot summit of Mauna Loa down to the Pacific, where Kilaluea, the youngest of the volcanic mountains, has since 1983 been pushing into the ocean from a vent, creating new land. Compared to more active volcanoes around the Pacific Rim and in other areas, Hawaii's volcanoes are fairly benign, so you can pass eruptions and lava flows in relative safety. No matter where you look, you'll see volcano views from a range of perspectives. Much of the park is preserved as wilderness, but it does provide 150 miles of trails, two visitor centers, and two scenic drives with a wealth of volcano views An 11-mile drive, called Crater Rim, passes by many rising steam vents. The Chain of Craters Road, a 46-mile round trip journey, goes by historic pit craters and heads down toward the ocean. Along the way you can see lava flowing like molasses. Three days has been suggested as a good time frame for exploring the park if you're not taking extensive hikes that eat up more time. Among the top hikes is the trail to Halemaumau Crater, emitting steam and sulfur. It's a moderate 3 1/2-mile hike and goes down 500 feet to the floor of Halemaumau Crater. You can also get a view and walk into a lava flow on a 10-minute walk from Crater Rim Drive. The Volcano House Hotel and Restaurant and the Kilauea Visitors Center and Park Headquarters are where you'll learn a great deal about the park and where you can get permits for overnight camping. They're all just inside the park's gate. There's no way to predict exactly what you'll see at the park. With luck, you'll view streaming rivers of red lava and you might see fountains of lava shooting hundreds of feet into the air. Or, the volcanoes could be completely still and silent. Remains of two important heiau (places of worship) that were rededicated as war temples by Kahekili, Maui's last ruling chief. Viewpoint of Central Maui. Park gate open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 10.2 acres 'Iao Valley State Monument End of 'Iao Valley Road (Highway 32), 'Iao Valley. Scenic viewpoint of 'Iao Needle, an erosional feature which abruptly rises 1200 feet from the valley floor. Park gate open 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. 6.2 acres Kaumahina State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 28 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 hours drive. Forested rest stop with picnicking and scenic viewpoint of northeast Maui coastline. Showy exotic plants. No drinking water. 7.8 acres Makena State Park South of Wailea at Pu'u Ola'i volcanic cone just beyond the end of Wailea Alanui Road. Scenic wildland beach park characterized by prominent cinder cone and large white sand beach. Swimming during calm seas, bodysurfing, board surfing, shore fishing, and beach- related activities. No drinking water. 164.4 acres Polipoli Spring State Recreation Area At 6200 feet elevation in Kula Forest Reserve, 9.7 miles upland from Kula on Waipoli Road off Kekaulike Avenue (Highway 377); 4-wheel drive vehicle recommended. Camping and lodging (one cabin) within the fog belt of Kula forest. Extensive trail system in the forest reserve, including through a forest reminiscent of the conifer forests of the Pacific Northwest coast. Sweeping views of Central and West Maui, Kaho'olawe, Moloka'i and Lana'i in clear weather. Pig and seasonal bird hunting. Nights are generally cold; winter nights frequently have below freezing temperatures. No campground showers. 10.0 acres Pua'a Ka'a State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 38 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 1/2 hours drive. Rest stop and picnicking in the rain forest. An idyllic area with small scenic waterfalls and pools. No drinking water. 5.0 acres Wai'anapanapa State Park In Hana at end of Wai'anapanapa Road off Hana Highway (Highway 360), 52.8 miles east of Kahului Airport--3 hours drive. Remote, wild, low-cliffed volcanic coastline offering solitude and respite from urban life. Lodging, camping, picnicking, shore fishing and hardy family hiking along an ancient Hawaiian coastal trail which leads to Hana. Excellent opportunity to study a seabird colony and anticline pools. Other features include native hala forest, legendary cave, heiau (place of worship), natural stone arch, sea stacks, blow holes and small black sand beach. 122.1 acres Wailua Valley State Wayside On Hana Highway (Highway 360), approximately 32 miles east of Kahului Airport--2 1/4 hours drive. Viewpoint of Ke'anae Valley and Ko'olau Gap in Haleakala's rim, and of Wailua Village and taro patches in opposite direction. The functions of the programs are mandated by Chapter 94, Hawaii Revised Statutes. The Division is organized into two branches, the Historical Records Branch and the Records Management Branch. The Historical Records Branch maintains the Hawaii State Archives, the state's central repository for non-current government records of permanent value. The State Archives also houses other historical materials including manuscript collections, maps, photographs, and government publications. The Archives is open to the public. The Records Management Branch provides support services to state government agencies of the executive and legislative branches. It does not offer services directly to the public. These records schedules identify the minimum amount of time specific records shall be maintained and their final disposition. Policies and guidelines on special topics are issued to facilitate government's efficient and effective management of its records. The State Records Center stores inactive, non-permanent records in bulk for state agencies for cost-efficiency and security. It is not authorized to release any records directly to the public.
