Moloka'i is only 10 miles wide and 38 miles long. Carved sharply from the mountains to the sea, its northern sea cliffs are the highest in the world; its West End plains descend gently across ranchlands and deer hunting preserves to clear waters and the longest, least crowded of the accessible beaches in Hawai'i. Moloka'i's shoreline road on the East End presents surprises around every bend, with ancient Hawaiian fishponds, taro farms, mango patches, and incredible inlets and bays with surf Hawai`i's longest beaches­ Moloka`i's West End spots and fishing. At the end of the road, you reach Halawa with its valley walls, waterfalls, meandering stream and Hawaiian village. In the center of the island on the southern coast, the longest pier in Hawai'i extends past reef to a dock where a ferry travels to and from Maui. The main town of Kaunakakai is nearby, with an historic church row and village life. Highway 470 ascends up the mountain for the spectacular lookout to Kalaupapa, a tongue of land extending into the Pacific below the sea cliffs. The isolated village welcomed Father Damien in the 1870s to help the residents, victims of what was then called leprosy. When leaving Ho'olehua Airport, the a sign reminds you that Moloka'i roads, which have no stoplights, are a place to "Slow Down"- one of the reasons many people come to Moloka'i. At Ho'olehua, visit the Purdy family of Hawaiian homesteaders who grow macadamia nuts, harvesting and cracking them for your enjoyment right before your eyes in the shade of mac trees. At Kualapu'u, see Coffees of Hawai'i, which grows Muleskinner and Malulani Estate Coffees and offers mule wagon rides through the plantation. The place to eat in the area is Meyers Sugar Mill & Museum the Kualapu'u Cookhouse, with its home-style cooking, catering and baking of pies and cakes. Continuing up 470, the Kalae Highway, the diversity of Moloka'i becomes apparent as the green hills turn into forests opening up to spectacular ocean views. The R. W. Meyer Sugar Mill (circa 1878) offers a look at an early pioneer who married into a Hawaiian family and developed agriculture. The old mill is on the National Register of Historic Sites. On the grounds is Moloka'i Museum & Cultural Center, which conducts tours and offers classes. Up Kalae Highway is the barn for Moloka'i Mule Ride, which carries visitors down the 1,700-foot Kalaupapa Trail. Kalaupapa can also be reached by small plane. Daily tours are led by Damien Tours. To see Kalaupapa Peninsula from above, continue to the end of Kalae Highway and walk a short path through Pala'au State Park to Kalaupapa Lookout. Interpretive signs explain the history. Nearby, the Phallic Rock is the subject of many legends about fertility. Halawa Valley on Moloka`i's East End Heading back down Highway 470, visit the R.W. Meyer Ltd., which owns 1,800 acres with hiking, mountain biking, fishing and nature treks by 4-wheel drive. When traveling to Kalae, see the Meyer Gate, 610 mile past mile marker 7. Nearby is the 9-hole Ironwood Hills Golf Club. Where Hwy. 470 makes a 'T' with Hwy 460, take a left and head east for a drive along Church Row as you enter Kaunakakai, the main town on the island. Kaunakakai offers shopping, a variety of dining, and the Kaunakakai Wharf, the major shipping center and transportation link, by ferry, on the Maui Princess. See the Giant Banyan Tree at Pau Hana Inn and drive along Kamehameha V (Hwy. 450) to view Keawanui and other ancient fishponds where Hawaiians practiced aquaculture. Wagon ride to ancient heiau Two churches were built by Father Damien on Moloka'i's East End. They are well marked, as St. Joseph Church and Our Lady of the Sorrows Church. One of the largest heiau (Hawaiian temples) in the state, Ili'ili'opa'e, is located near Puko'o, and a Hawaiian family takes visitors by horse-drawn wagon on an interpretive tour, designed for individuals or groups. Moloka'i Horse & Wagon Ride also offers prearranged activities and an informal Hawaiian picnic on the beach next to the largest mango patch in Hawai'i. At Moloka'i's far East End is the verdant Pu'u O Hoku Ranch, with charming ranch buildings. Known for their interest in preserving Hawaiian culture and endangered species, the ranch offers guest rooms to travelers with reservations. Purdy's Hawaiian Homes macadamia farm As you approach the end of Kamehameha V Highway, the scenic drive becomes more winding and the coast more rugged. The tiny, turtle-shaped isle of Mokuho'oniki is just offshore. As you descend into Halawa Valley there are beautiful lookouts and the mouth of the stream is a wonderful place to rest. The walking trail up the valley is closed to the public. The deep valleys were agricultural centers of old Hawai'i with taro patches and many house sites. Today, the valleys are visited by hunters, fishermen and paddlers of kayak and canoe. It is best to find a guide, as the coast is very rugged. The return road trip from Halawa to the airport is 37 miles, and is most enjoyable driven leisurely, taking several hours for scenic stops. The road climbs the gentle slope of Maunaloa, birthplace of hula, and descends to the sunny side. Take the right fork onto Kaluakoi Road to beaches of Papohaku and Kepuhi. Kaluakoi Resort offers an 18-hole championship golf course, accommodations, tennis, and ocean activities. Adjacent Papohaku Ranchlands is a community of homes and ranches for people who enjoy sun, serenity, trails, wildlife and beaches. Papohaku Beach Park is excellent for strolling on the longest, widest sandy beaches in Hawai'i. At nearby Maunaloa Village, visit Moloka'i Ranch Outfitters Headquarters for a safari through Moloka'i Ranch Wildlife Conservation Park. The ranch offers trail rides for ranch guests and has the best rodeo arena in the state; you learn to be a wrangler. Ask about hiking through the rangelands and places to stay. Maunaloa Village has shops and places to buy snacks. It is a quaint town, with a history dating back to the early cattle industry in Hawai'i. It offers beautiful views of the coast and spectacular sunsets for the end of your day.

This is a problem in Wailea where you're more or less dependent on your hotel. When we first checked in we loved the view and the balcony, and the place was huge. However we got tired of having to pay resort prices, but still had to drive down the hill to find an open restaurant or bar, or even go to the beach. The Japanese-style baths were cold and not relaxing. I have been to hot spring baths in Japan, and that is an inviting and invigorating experience. This was not. There is also a normal pool and hot tub, but they are only open until 6 pm! There are three restaurants: two Japanese, and one Italian. The Japanese-French one is not really haute cuisine like they make it sound. That's probably why the restaurant is almost always completely empty. The Italian restaurant is a little more lively, and we enjoyed having a drink at the outdoor bar there, but it doesn't stay open late like other bars in Maui. We didn't visit the third, because it was always closed. The condo has a Japanese-style shower-room and separate toilet room. These could have been cleaner, or updated. The kitchen was very small with a mini electric stove and no oven, no microwave, no dishwasher, no dish drainer. And you had to rent a set of pots that didn't include much. The refrigerator was tiny and filled with frost, and froze all our food, so we didn't cook very much in the room. The king bed really is two twins pushed together. I couldn't believe it. The employees were very nice, though it's true that not many spoke English well enough to give you tourism advice or directions. I think that's a primary function of any hotel and shouldn't be overlooked. The grounds are well kept and the sunsets are a glorious sight from your balcony. It's very quiet with no children and I appreciated that. But as we visited other Wailea resorts throughout the week, and sat on their beaches with tropical drinks, and ate at fun restaurants, and watched people relax on loungers at the pool all day, I couldn't help but feel that was the Maui experience we had wanted to have, and the Diamond was just lacking. My advice is either to pay more for a true Wailea resort on the beach, or stay in a friendly condo in laid-back Kihei. The grounds are okay, but the grounds next to the rooms were unattended too and unpleasant to see. The bathroom shower needed to be cleaned (by myself) with a pot scruber. The need to rent kitchen materials was a major disppointment and let down. The microwave also had to be rented. Such items are standard in places where we have paid 125% less. The Japanese dinning was great on service, small on food and a bit too costly to us. The spa area was the highlight of the stay. The 'body shower' and 'waterfall' were just what the body ordered! The need to pay for gym sessions with a personal trainer were also a disappointment. On vacation, we generally want to work out at our leisure, not be subjected to unwarrented training sessions. After paying for an overprice room the additional charges for all of the other basic items made this a place that we will not return. Traveler rating: Maui: Diamond Hawaii Resort and Spa : "Perfect Change of Pace" Sep 10, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Beltsville, MD Compare prices with: I just took the family (wife (44), son (22) and daughters (19,17)) to Maui for 3 nights and Waikiki for 5, so we opened our trip at the Diamond Resort, which is really in Wialea. This was the perfect change of pace resort after a long flight from the east coast. The free spa is tremendous and relaxing (I hit it every night and my 17 year old had a facial and massage that made her trip - $100), and the rooms (really suites) were so clean and spacious. The property is large measured by land but very small measured by number of rooms, so you really get great treatment by the staff buy can hide away by yourself for peace and quiet if that's what you want. My daughters went to the Japanese restaurant at the resort and said it was the best. They also have a renowned Italian restaurant there, but I didn't try it. My one criticism is the king bed really isn't a king but two beds together, and the pillows were not great. And here is a tip...if you're older and/or don't walk very well, make sure you tell them so they can put you in a room that is close to the main level. The property is dramatically placed on a hill, so the lower you are the closer you are to the ocean but the more you have to walk up and down the hill. My kids were in building 20 and we were in building 1, and there room was much better than ours in term of walking and panoramic view. Even with these quirks, I give The Diamond Resort 4.5 stars; I knew my wife and I would love the place when I booked it, but I was shocked at how much my children loved it too. The rooms are spacious and though we had a Garden View Room all rooms are ocean facing and we had a partial view of the ocean from the first floor. We enjoyed lovely sunsets from our location. The bed was MASSIVE and I loved the two white spa robes that were provided. And it was so cute that they provided a green tea set along with american coffee cups and coffeemaker. Whatever coffee or green tea we used was replenished daily by the maid service and our tea/coffee cups were cleaned by the service. It may be a minor inconvenience to rent cookware for $4 a day - but the cost is really nominal, and frankly who cooks all that much on vacation? The kitchen (more of a kitchenette) was really rather small to create a culinary masterpiece anyway - just 2 burners and a dorm size fridge. With all the spectacular restaurants in Maui we never ran out of options in 2 weeks. Also, I wanted to address some of the earlier reviewers' comments which are really misleading. First, while I will agree that this resort caters to a primarily Japanese clientele, I spoke with the front desk staff a few times, to have them change the time of our dinner reservation, ask general questions, and schedule spa appointments - there was no barrier in communication and things were handled as requested each time. In fact, the staff was mostly Hawaiian, so it is untrue that they only understand Japanese. Second, prior to our stay at Diamond it was very clear to me that the use of their fitness facilities are only for those who are using their personal trainers. I thought this limitation was unfortunate, but this is fairly clear. Their was no information in the brochure or the DR website to make you think otherwise. Aside from this, I just wanted to mention that the views were spectacular, I had a sublime facial at their spa - it lasted over an hour, we enjoyed feeding the koi that are in all the pools and waterfalls that are woven throughout the grounds (DR sells bags of food for just a $1), and their restaurant Capisché? ranks with the top restaurants in Maui for a reason - they have an extensive wine list, sophisticated menu and delicious food. The entire resort staff was very gracious and attentive to our needs during our stay. If you are looking for tranquility, privacy and amazing views, I would highly recommend this unique experience. And it is minutes from some of the best beaches and shopping in Maui. It is also one of the most economical places to stay in beautifully manicured landscape of Wailea. Thanks! Music Style - Slack Key If you do not have any Gabby Pahinui in your Hawaiian Music Collection, then you are missingout on one of the most admired and talented Hawaiian Artists of all time. Gabby is commonly referred to as the best slack key guitar player of all time. When you put on thisclassic CD from 1972, you will quickly understand why. Unlike other sites that review CD's, ourreviews tend to focus on CD's that everyone should have as part of their collection. Gabby certainly falls into this category. In fact, I believe that most Hawaiians willagree with me when I say every Gabby CD (including this one) is a classic and you will wantto pick up several. Gabby is more commonly known as the Brown Album . Its hard for me to say that itis my favorite Gabby Pahinui CD, because I love all the Gabby CD's and albums that I own.However, the Brown Album and the Gabby Pahinui Hawaiian Band Vol 1 certainlyrank as 2 of my most listened to CD's. The Brown Album contains many of Gabby's most recognized mele's. One of Gabby'smost popular songs is Hi'ilawe . This CD starts with an early rendition of this song recorded by Gabby in 1947 and ends with a version recorded in 1972. The 1947 versionwas Gabby's first recording at age 26. Hi'ilawe has to be one of most cherished Hawaiian mele's of all time. It picks me up whenever I hearthe incredible guitar strumming. Gabby's voice seems to capture the spirit of Hawaii. Even today when I hear Gabby's son, Cyril, play thismele I get chills. Cyril sounds a lot like his Dad. Wow, I am already on my forth paragraph and I have only described one song. You can see Ihave a real passion for Gabby's music. Some of the other classics on this CD include Luau Hula , He'eia , Lei Nani , and Ka Moa'e and several others that were recorded withthe legendary 'Atta' Isaacs and 'Joe Gang' Kapahu. You'll love the conversations between themat the end of Ka Moa'e . Gabby's sons Cyril, Bla, Philip, and Martin are also featuredon the CD. All share the incredible music talent of their father and have many recordings of theirown that are wonderful. One thing that you will quickly notice when you put on this CD is how it lifts your spirits.Gabby Pahinui slack key is spirited and fun. You can't help being in a great mood when you listento this CD. The way the Gabby, Atta, Joe Gang, and Gabby's sons blend their instrumentsinto perfect harmony is beyond description. It has to be experienced. Sadly, Gabby passed away in 1980, but through his CD's his music lives on.
