Area Facts : Kalaupapa, a small, isolated peninsula on the north side of Molokai, was a rough, rocky and inaccessible area where migrant workers in the 1800s stricken with leprosy (now called Hansens Disease) were abandoned. Leprosy was eradicated with sulpha drugs in the 1940s, and this area is now a National Historic Site of the U.S. Park Service where access is available only through a limited number of escorted tours. Cons: Eating-in means you take your to-go styrofoam container and sit at a table. I work down the street so actually come here fairly often. Its really cheap and they give you a good amount of food. I like the teriyaki plates and the bento box. I LOVE the Aloha Saimin. This consists of a bowl of incredibly rich soup, with saimin noodles, teriyaki chicken, spam, and a fresh fried egg on top. All this for under $5. The macaroni salad is to die for, btw, and I have been known to order huge party plates of it, along with party plates of shortribs, to bring to pot-lucks. The Loco Moco is for the big eaters - two huge hamburger patties over rice, with lots of gravy, fried eggs on top and mac salad on the side. Yep, its Hawaiian alright! For less than $4, you can get a teriyaki mini-plate consisting of meat, rice and macaroni salad. Oh, and the proprieters are extremely sweet. Gardening--Fun and Frugal! by: Cyndi Roberts Whether you are an avid vegetable gardener, a beginning herb gardener or just like to have a pretty yard, these frugal tips may help you save a little money! 1. Stale coffee and coffee grounds make great organic fertilizer. They provide many trace minerals and low, gentle levels of nitrogen, potassium and phosphorous. 2. Remember that a good soaking of water less often is better than a light sprinkling every day -- for veggies and for your lawn. 3. If your neighbor has a plant you particularly like, ask for a cutting, instead of going to the nursery and buying one. Maybe you could trade a cutting from one of your own plants. 4. To easily water a tomato plant, bury a bottomless coffee can next to the plant and pour the water into the can. This allows the water to go straight to the roots. 5. Plant marigolds in your vegetable garden. They will attract insects that eat aphids and other pests. 6. My husband bought some used carpet at a garage sale, cut it into wide strips and laid it down between the rows in our garden. Now we can pick peas with getting our shoes muddy. 7. Use grass clippings as mulch around your vegetable plants to keep moisture in and weeds out. Just don't use the clippings right after you have fertilized your grass or treated for weed control. 8. If you have access to them, pine needles make excellent mulch. 9. A natural, frugal garden pest spray: mix 1 tablespoon of liquid dishwashing soap and 1 cup of cooking oil. Use 3 tablespoons of this mixture to 1 quart of water and spray on plants. 10. In the herb garden, to keep plants like mint from taking over too big an area, put it in a clay pot and simply plant the whole pot! "He who plants a garden, plants happiness." Staff were all extremely helpful, welcoming and friendly. Because this resort is goverment owned, the standards are not what you would expect from a five star, but the rooms are cleaned daily, new linnen on the beds, and four clean towels each morning. Also, the air conditioning works well, which is essential. There was plenty of hot water and the fridge worked perfectly. Be prepared to endure the wardrobe door collapsing, ditto the shower door. No baths or bidet, by the way. Any problems, once reported to the desk, were dealt with promptly. The patios and balconies all have the A/C vent emptying onto them, so you have to switch it off if you want to sit there.The t.v. in the room shows only local stuff. The location of the Lanai is fantastic - the best on Tengah beach, which is itself a delight. The grounds are well maintained and the central swimming pool is very clean. The beach bar is great for lunch, with an extensive menu which is sooo cheap but delicious. It also serves a good variety of fruit drinks and beer. There are numerous eateries within walking distance, such as Sheelas, The Lighthouse, Mata - Hari, and the Sun Cafe, all of which I enjoyed. Fat Mammas is close too, and I've heard only good things about it. We loved the time we spent at the Lanai and would happily go again. We would, I think, prefer a two bedroomed chalet, for the extra space and comfort.
