Hawaii Volcano Ages Reply to ASK-AN-EARTH-SCIENTIST Subject: Ages of the Hawaiian volcanoes Could you tell me when the different Hawaiian islands were formed? ..and Subject: Active Hawaiian Volcanoes How many volcanoes are active at this present time in hawaii? Each of the Hawaiian Islands is generally older than the next whenone moves up the island chain from southeast (the Big Island) to northwest (Kure). In fact, the chain continues beyond Kure as a series of now-submerged former islands known as seamounts. It is important to remember,however, that the time over which various active volcanoes on the islandsremain active is long (hunders of thousands of years) so that significantoverlap in ages occur on neighboring islands. Take for instance Haleakala on Maui: Although itis a great distance away from the presently erupting Kilauea, Haleakalalast erupted only about 200 years ago. What element distinguishes an ethnic music style from other ethnic music styles? For example, what is the difference between Okinawa music and Scotland music? I think elements of music are (1) melody (scale), (2 ) chord, (3) rhythm, and (4) instruments. First, let's think about melody. Rock and Blues are easy examples, even though they are not ethnic music. Rock uses normal music scale while Blues includes blue-notes in its music scale. Next, think about chords. Rock uses simple chords (triad) while Jazz includes 7th in its chords. Chord progression of Jazz is more complicated than that of Rock as well. For rhythm, Rock uses 8 beat, Fusion uses 16 beat, Jazz uses 4 beat. Finally, think about musical instruments. It is easy to see differences between Classical music and Rock music. Especially, musical instruments are important elements of ethnic music, since each country has different music instruments. I am trying to capture features of each ethnic music style based on this idea, and to reproduce them with automated composing system. This page includes considerations that I faced when I embedded functions of ethnic music composition. About Hawaiian Music I am not sure that people consider Hawaiian music as ethnic music. But the music has very strong characteristics. Hawaiian music uses very slow sliding guitars and ukuleles. Guitar strings are tuned for major chord. (This kind of guitar is called slack key guitar.) So, Hawaiian music uses many major chords in its chord progression. I am not sure but I guess guitarist uses bottle neck and scratch strings with it. (I need more information,please help me.) Once the home of a thriving pineapple plantation, Lanai has reinvented itself as an alluring resort destination offering world-class golf courses and award-winning accommodations . In ancient times, Lanai was thought to be overrun with evil spirits. A young man named Kaululaau, the son of a Maui chief, was exiled to Lanai to explore the island and deem it free of such spirits to make Lanai suitable for settling. A major chapter in Lanais history was penned in 1922, when an enterprising businessman named James Dole purchased the island for $1.1 million. Dole started growing pineapple on his island, and soon canned pineapplea new concept at the timebecame a smash hit on the mainland. In the late 1980s, as the pineapple industry began to wane, Lanai turned to tourism. Two luxury resorts were built: the Lodge at Koele and the Manele Bay Hotel . Also added were a pair of championship golf courses: the Experience at Koele and the Challenge at Manele (designed by Ted Robinson and Jack Nicklaus, respectively). Besides golf, Lanai offers many things to do and see. Go for a swim at picturesque Hulopoe Beach. Snorkel the islands cliff-lined west coast. Explore the Garden of the Gods , an intriguing rock formation reminiscent of a lunar landscape. Hunt for treasures or examine historic petroglyphs at Shipwreck Beach . When it comes to fashion the local opinion is in general: "comfort is more important than fashion". Most days it is best to dress the "layered look" as it can be cold in the morning with temperature in the low 50s, and then as the day goes on temperatures generally climb to around the 70s. Due to being at an elevation of about 3800 feet, and our much cooler weather, there are no mosquitoes or other bugs in Volcano which are found at sea level. The weather can change very quickly from bright sunshine to tropical rain, and right back to bright sunshine. Even within our own town sometimes you can have rain on one side and sunshine on the other side of the Village, which is referred to as having "micro" climates. Living in Paradise, we take the weather as it comes. Without some rain once in a while we would not have the tropical lush Hapu'u forest that Volcano is known for. Cardinals, Hawaiian Hawks, Ohia Trees with bright Red Lehua Blossoms, Nene Goose, a Volcano, Steam Vents, Lava Tubes, and so much more. What more can we ask for?
