Different Styles of Hawaiian Shirts Different Types of Hawaiian Shirts There are different types of Hawaiian shirts based on the style or layout of the design. The most common ones are the basic all-over print and the scenic print. But there are variations within these types well as several other styles. We'll also cover some of the terminology used for Hawaiian shirts. All of our shirts are made in Hawaii with great care and with special attention to the details like matched pockets. Basic All-Over Print Hawaiian shirts: These shirts are probably the most common shirts. They are characterized by a repeating print that appears all over the fabric in a uniform manner as illustrated to the left. These shirts can be worn tucked in our out. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Scenic Print Hawaiian shirts: The scenic shirts are similar to the all-over print shirts in that the details in the print repeat in a uniform matter. The only difference is that these shirts contain scenery rather than just a simple repeating image of a flower or leaf. For some people, the scenic prints conjure up feelings of freedom and being on vacation. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Panel Hawaiian shirts: Some shirts have prints that are laid out in vertical panels, usually flowers and/or leaves. Like the basic all-over prints and the scenic prints, the panel designs have repeating patterns, but they repeat as you go from one side of the shirt to the other, rather than all over the shirt. These shirts typically do not match up perfectly to create a seamless image at the buttons. Border Hawaiian shirts: Shirts that have a design going across the shirt are called border Hawaiian shirts. Most of these shirts have a design in them that repeat every 10-12 inches as you go from one side of the shirt to the other. If the design happens to go across the bottom of the shirt, they may be called a Bottom Design Hawaiian shirt . The shirt illustrated at left is a border shirt that also happens to be a bottom print. Border Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked. Matched Prints: Some border or bottom print Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image at the buttons. The shirt to the left, unlike the one right above it, is perfectly matched at the buttons creating a seamless image as you go across the shirt. These shirt are harder to make and require greater skill and attention to detail. Many border print shirts do not match at the buttons like this one does. Engineered Hawaiian shirts: Engineered Hawaiian shirts have a seamless image from one side of the shirt to the other. The image usually repeats every 18 inches, which is greater than that of most border print shirts. The shirts also have a seamless image that is uninterrupted at the buttons. These shirts are usually the priciest shirts for any given quality of fabric because it requires the most fabric to manufacture. Engineered Hawaiian shirts are meant to be worn untucked to show off the entire design. Matched Pocket: The better Hawaiian shirts have a matched pocket. That means the pocket exactly matches the print on the shirt making it nearly invisible. In the picture to the left, you can see that the palm tree leaves on the pocket precisely line up with the leaves on the shirt. The result is a seamless image created by the pocket on the shirt. Sail, if there is wind, otherwise motor over to Lanai and spend the day snorkeling, eating, and taking a tour of the small town in center of the island. Crew were excellant and pupus and drinks were readily available on trip over and back. An excellant meal was served by the crew while on the island. Note: Skip the Molokini scene. There are much better snorkling sites without all the restrictions at Molokini Crater. To name a few: Black Rock at Kaanapali, Napili Bay, Honolua Bay. Sails out of Lahaina. Jul 7, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Colorado Springs, CO What a great time my family and I had on our trip to Molokini with Trilogy. My husband and his extended family, 13 of us with an age range of 75 to 4, went on a morning snorkel trip. Some stayed on the boat, others snorkeled and some did a Scuba dive. All expressed the same pleasure in the experience. All you have to bring is yourself and a towel. They provided all gear; boogie boards for the children to support themselves while snorkeling, seasick medication or herbal remedies, great food and conversation. We enjoyed going out on a smaller boat with fewer participants and interacting with the crew. Food was great and the crew was fun and did a great job making us feel like we belonged on the boat with them. There is even a 10% discount if you book your excursion on line with them. In comparison, some of us did a snorkel trip to the Na Pali coast one week later on Kauai. Many people on the island recommended a particular company as the best so we went on an afternoon trip with them. Trilogy did so much better than “the best” on Kauai at providing a fun and welcoming environment. Don't miss an excursion with Trilogy while on Maui!! Jun 3, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Laguna Hills, Ca. I decided to take my family, fiancee, daughter and parents to the morning trip to Lanai on the Trilogy. I had taken a trip there before a long time ago but not like this. The trip to the island was fantastic. The staff very attentive and the food was good. We saw spinner dolphins on our way to the island. Our captin has a good eye for spotting them! We spent several minutes circling them and watching them show off. Next we had a van tour of Lanai. Our tour guide was great! I only wish we could have spent more time there. The vans dropped us off at the beach for some fun in the sun. What a great beach and the snorkeling was the best. Very little tourists. We then went back to the marina where the staff cooked us a great BBQ lunch. After lunch we headed for home. The trip home seemed a little long as some people were getting sick. I was not one of those but did manage to twist my ankle getting on the boat. Not a big deal, but when I got home, I found I actually broke my foot! Lesson to be learned, when they say "watch your step", make sure you do it. My whole family loved the trip and I would do it again. The one thing I would add is that it would be nice if they served beer on the trip as the weather and scenery is perfect for an ice cold beer to top off the day! Keep up the good work guys! Crew was very friendly and well informed, food was excellent and plenty. There website is accurate when describing activities and food and schedule. Wish I had used Trilogy to go to Molokini! Apr 15, 2005 : A TripAdvisor Member, Strongsville, Ohio This was the best part of our trip to Maui!! This trip takes you to the island of Lana'i. We live in the east and have only experienced the atlantic ocean - the pacific ocean is sooooo much more blue and beautiful! On the boat ride - we were fortunate to see the humpback whales - fantastic!! We were able to get great pictures of Maui and Lana'i from the boat. On Lana'i, we had a van tour of the island which was very enjoyable. My husband did snorkeling - he said the snorkeling was the best on Lana'i - better than Maui or Kauai. He also was able to swim with spinner dolphins!! The beach was very beautiful and uncrowded. A picnic lunch on the boat and a delicious BBQ chicken dinner on the island of Lana'i was included. Also, sailing back to Maui, we had champagne! The crew on the boat were great! We had a fantastic time!! Well worth the money - $179 per person. Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Maui and Kahoolawe, Hawaii Elevation: 1,476 feet (450 m) - Kahoolawe 10,023 feet (3,055 m) - Maui The Island of Maui is made of two volcanoes: West Maui and East Maui.Most of the West Maui shield (20.9N, 156.6W) formed between 2-1.3 millionyears ago. A central caldera has been identified roughly in the area ofthe present-day Iao Valley. Alkalic basalts capped the volcano about 1.2million years ago. Four small eruptions occurred during the rejuvenatedstage on West Maui, probably about 1 million years ago. The volcano isdeeply dissected by numerous valleys. West Maui has not erupted inhistoric time and is considered to be extinct . East Maui Volcano, often also (but incorrectly) called Haleakala, is the easternmost of the twoshield volcanoes that make the Island of Maui. East Maui Volcano (20.7N, 156.2W)is the third largest Hawaiian shield volcano. Three rift zones can beclearly seen in the above Space Shuttle photograph(compare with map below). Most of thevolcanic activity has been concentrated along the southwest and east riftzones. The impressive Haleakala Crater is at the summit of the volcano.Haleakala Crater is an erosional caldera, formed by the coalescence ofthe heads of two large valleys as they eroded into the volcano. The mainshield of Haleakala is more than 800,000 years old. Lava flows andpyroclastics of the capping stage range in age from 930,000 to 350,000years old. Rejuvenated-stage volcanic rocks occur along the rift zonesand in the crater. The most recent eruption of Haleakala was in about1790 at La Perouse Bay. Haleakala is considered an active volcanobecause this eruption is in historic time for Hawaii. Kahoolawe (20.5N, 156.6W) is one of the smallest shield volcanoes in theHawaiian Islands. Kahoolawe is the island near the bottom of the slide.The lava flows that make the main shield are 1-2 million years old. Waveerosion has exposed a caldera on the eastside of the island .
