At home we all know the nice restaurants for that special dinner, the local places for good Chinese or Italian food, and even the hole-in-the-walls which we like to think only we know about. When we come to Hawaii we are clueless. We may read Frommers or Fodor's and get an idea of what's available, or buy a good book like Robert and Cindy Carpenter's Hawaii Restaurant Guide. More often we tend to eat at our hotel or someplace nearby that "seems" good or even look for the nearest Denny's or McDonalds. Too often we find ourselves spending good money for food that's simply ok or worse. I'll always remember that the worst Chinese food my wife and I ever had was in San Francisco's Chinatown. We had no idea where to eat, so we just picked a place at random. The food was terrible! Matthew Gray understood this problem very well. As an accomplished chef and food critic for the Honolulu Advertiser, Gray had eaten in almost every restaurant on Oahu. He knew that there were really good places to eat, but that there were also quite a few pretty bad places also. After over ten years of experiencing the good and bad of Hawaii's restaurants, Matthew and his partner Keira Nagai, who also had worked for years in the food industry, decided to start their own business to share their knowledge of Oahu's restaurants with those of us who know far too little. Best Beaches 1999 Maui volcano has witnessedEast Maui volcano (Haleakala), Hawai`i [ TEXT ONLY ] Hualalai Lo`ihi East Maui, or Haleakala-- A Potentially Hazardous Volcano View east across Haleakala Crater, with young cinder cones in foreground. When asked about Hawaiian volcanoes, most people imagine the Island of Hawai`i and its eruptions at Kilauea or Mauna Loa volcanoes. But East Maui volcano has witnessed at least ten eruptions in thepast 1,000 years, and numerous eruptions have occurred there in the past 10,000 years. Thus, East Maui's long eruptive history and recent activity indicate that the volcano will erupt in the future. Haleakala National Park is the most visited part of East Maui. The Hawaiian name Hale-a-ka-la (lit., house of the sun), is now nearly synonymous with the entire shield of East Maui volcano. Early Hawaiians, however, applied the name only to the summit area, the site where the demigod Maui snared the sun and forced it to slow its journey across the sky. The oldest lava flow exposed on East Maui is about 1.1 million years in age. It is part of a sequence of flows emplaced near the end of shield building on East Maui. The time estimated to build a volcano from ocean floor to the end of its shield-building stage is thought by some scientists to be about 0.6 million years. East Maui volcano probably began its growth about 2.0 million years ago. Volcanism of the past 30,000 years on East Maui has been focused along the southwest and east rift zones. These two volcanic axes together form one gently curving arc that passes from La Perouse Bay (southwest flank of East Maui) through Haleakala Crater to Hana on the east flank. The alignment continues east beneath the ocean as Haleakala Ridge, one of the longest rift zones along the Hawaiian Islands volcanic chain. The on-land segment of this lengthy volcanic line of vents is the zone of greatest hazard for future lava flows and cindery ash. | Eruptive history | Haleakala Crater mapping | Geologic data sets | East Maui Facts Map of the Island of Maui Location 20.718 N 156.254 W Elev. (see Volcano Watch essay , September 9, 1999). Number of Historical Eruptions See recent eruption description above. Summit Crater A large topographic depression, Haleakala Crater, occupies the summit region of East Maui volcano. The crater is breached at its northwest and southeast corners by large valleys that drain to the north and south coasts, respectively. The crater originated by erosion, according to most published accounts and additionalrecent research. Dimensions: 3.5 x 12 km, elongate east-west Depth: 860 m Estimated age: formed between 120,000 and 150,000 years ago (see Volcano Watch essay , March 8, 2001) Oldest Dated Rocks About 1.1 million years Estimated Age of On-land Eruptions Numerous small lava flows in past 30,000 years; slopes of volcano mantled by lava flows 700,000 to 150,000 years in age. Mar 01 '01 (Updated Mar 02 '01) Author's Product Rating Scenery: Crowds: Time needed for visit: Pros Well worth seeing! Cons Make sure you take enough time! The Bottom Line Hawaaian Volcanoes National Park is a 'must see' on the big island. Full Review Hawaii, one of the rare places where you can you see a volcano in a national park!!! We took the helicopter ride over the ring of fire and then went on down tothe local park to get another look!! Anywhere else in the world where there is a volcano, people run, but in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park they flock to see it. This park has existed since 1916, surrounding Kilauea Caldero and Mauna Loa, and is one of the worlds most active volcanic areas. This park is located on the big island of Hawaii, on the southeastern coast. We drove there from Hilo and it took about 30-45 minutes. The park is open 24 hours a day and there are trails that you can take and even camp on. The main road of the park begins near Kilauea Caldero and goes down to the coast. There is a visitor center and it contains maps and information on the trails. It also issues permits. There are some picnic areas. The park is close enough to Highway 11 to provide access to get gas. However, if you have car problems, you're out of luck since there is nothing else within 21 miles. The visitor center is open 7:45 AM through 5 PM. Elevations within the park range from sea level to about 14,000 feet and it can get pretty cool in certain places. We were glad someone we knew, who had been there, suggested taking jeans and sweatshirts!! Its also not unusual for a shower to come up unexpectedly. We stood at the edge of a trail, looking out over the fields leading to one of the craters and watched a rainline move toward us very fast!! There is also a museum, several miles from the visitor center, which provides films of past eruptions. You can also purchase videos of past eruptions. They have overlooks to view both craters. This center is open from 8:30-5 PM daily. You can explore many of the areas around the volcano by foot, at your own risk of course. There are signs which tell you that people have walked in and never been seen again so we elected not to do that!! Hikers are required to register. Since we only spent a day and a half on the "big island", and only had part of it at the park, we didnt get to see a lot of it and I have a feeling we could have spent lots of time here. However, the volcano was pretty quiet while we were there (much to our disappointment), so it gave us a feeling of not missing too, too much. However, that is not to diminish the awesome experience of being in the presence of one of God's wonders, the volcano. Knowing it could erupt anytime was exciting. And we did get to see some great views of lava flows and hot spots, fire pools, etc. The helicopter ride over the park and flying over the 'ring of fire' was truly awesome.
