Hawaii Volcano, Volcano Hotels - Directory VolcanoHotels - Accommodations & Lodging at the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park So you want to visit the Volcano? GREAT CHOICE!! Only one mile from the entrance to Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, the tranquil Village of Volcano has a variety of Hotels, Vacation Houses, Inns, and B&Bs. Volcano is a romantic peaceful place where you get away from the noise, traffic, and city lights so commonly found elsewhere. You don't find any big hotels in Volcano, but instead smaller charming places that will bring you back in time when life seemed to be simpler. Relax, enjoy, and have a great time visiting this beautiful piece of paradise. All featured Hotels, Vacation Houses, Inns, and B&Bs meet our strict requirements to qualify as "Volcano Choice" Lodging. We know each owner / operator personally and they all take great pride in offering you a comfortable place to stay for your next Volcano vacation. Painting by local artist Kina Kam If you are not sure which place would best suit your needs, just let us know what you are looking for via email and we will be most happy to assist you in selecting the right place just for you. When it comes to fashion the local opinion is in general: "comfort is more important than fashion". Most days it is best to dress the "layered look" as it can be cold in the morning with temperature in the low 50s, and then as the day goes on temperatures generally climb to around the 70s. Due to being at an elevation of about 3800 feet, and our much cooler weather, there are no mosquitoes or other bugs in Volcano which are found at sea level. The weather can change very quickly from bright sunshine to tropical rain, and right back to bright sunshine. Even within our own town sometimes you can have rain on one side and sunshine on the other side of the Village, which is referred to as having "micro" climates. Living in Paradise, we take the weather as it comes. Without some rain once in a while we would not have the tropical lush Hapu'u forest that Volcano is known for. Cardinals, Hawaiian Hawks, Ohia Trees with bright Red Lehua Blossoms, Nene Goose, a Volcano, Steam Vents, Lava Tubes, and so much more. What more can we ask for? We love Volcano, and we hope you will enjoy your visit to the place we call "home" . VOLCANO HOUSE: There is only one hotel in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, which is the Volcano House Hotel. The Volcano House does have the exclusive concession to operate a lodging facility in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. If you are interested in reservations at the Volcano House, please call them at 967-7321. Their website is www.volcanohousehotel.com . All the Bed and Breakfast places and vacation houses included in our directory are within 1-3 miles of the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, so there are lots of wonderful places in the same general area as the Volcano House. Hawaiian Music What isMusic Laboratory Research-Genre Study-Ethnic Music-Hawaiian Music Research -> Genre Study -> Ethnic Music -> Hawaiian Music What is ethnic music? What element distinguishes an ethnic music style from other ethnic music styles? For example, what is the difference between Okinawa music and Scotland music? I think elements of music are (1) melody (scale), (2 ) chord, (3) rhythm, and (4) instruments. First, let's think about melody. Rock and Blues are easy examples, even though they are not ethnic music. Rock uses normal music scale while Blues includes blue-notes in its music scale. Next, think about chords. Rock uses simple chords (triad) while Jazz includes 7th in its chords. Chord progression of Jazz is more complicated than that of Rock as well. For rhythm, Rock uses 8 beat, Fusion uses 16 beat, Jazz uses 4 beat. Finally, think about musical instruments. It is easy to see differences between Classical music and Rock music. Especially, musical instruments are important elements of ethnic music, since each country has different music instruments. I am trying to capture features of each ethnic music style based on this idea, and to reproduce them with automated composing system. This page includes considerations that I faced when I embedded functions of ethnic music composition. About Hawaiian Music I am not sure that people consider Hawaiian music as ethnic music. But the music has very strong characteristics. Hawaiian music uses very slow sliding guitars and ukuleles. Guitar strings are tuned for major chord. (This kind of guitar is called slack key guitar.) So, Hawaiian music uses many major chords in its chord progression. I am not sure but I guess guitarist uses bottle neck and scratch strings with it. (I need more information, please help me.) The Hawaii of South Seas literature and Hollywood films really does exist. Here one will find palm-fringed blue lagoons, lush rainforests, hidden gardens, cascading waterfalls, wild rivers running through rugged canyons, and soaring volcanoes. And those beaches -- gold, red, black, and even green sands caressed by endless surf - a perfect place for spending holidays. History After a series of battles that ended in 1795 and peaceful cession of the island of Kauai in 1810, the Hawaiian Islands were united for the first time under a single ruler who would become known as King Kamehameha the Great. He established the House of Kamehameha, a dynasty that ruled over the kingdom until 1872. One of the most important events during those years was the suppression of the Hawaii Catholic Church. The Newlands Resolution was passed on July 7, 1898, formally annexing Hawaii as a United States territory. In 1900, it was granted self-governance and retained Iolani Palace as the territorial capitol building. In March 1959, both houses of Congress passed the Admission Act and U.S. President Dwight D. Eisenhower signed it into law. On June 27 of that year, a plebiscite was held asking residents of Hawaii to vote on accepting the statehood bill. After statehood, Hawaii quickly became a modern state with a construction boom and rapidly growing economy. Kaululaau was a mischievous young man, always getting in trouble, and when he accidentally destroyed an entire crop of breadfruit, his fathers punishment was to banish him to Lanai. At the time, Lanai was an unexplored island, and evil spirits were believed to reside there. But the energetic Kaululaau cleared the land and found the island to be free of such spirits. In time, people began to settle the island. Perhaps a few evil spirits did lurk around Lanai, however, because frustrated residents trying to establish an economy on the island seemed to fall under a curse. Sugarcane and cattle were just two ambitious enterprises that came and went without success. Everything changed in 1922, when James Dole arrived on Lanai and purchased the entire island. The price tag? A cool $1.1 million. Dole had the magic touch. He wanted to grow pineapple on the island, and his efforts were remarkably successful. Soon, canned pineapple from Lanai, a product that no one had even heard of beforebecame a huge hit on the mainland United States. As large plantations were built, the island became a major exporter of this sweet, fleshy fruit; in fact, at one time, tiny Lanaproduced 75 percent of the worlds pineapple! To accommodate the increasing number of workers arriving on Lanai to toil in the pineapple fields, Dole built a plantation camp in the flatlands. This is now Lanai City. For the next few decades, Lanai was widely known as Hawaiis vibrant "Pineapple Island." Thousands of acres were covered with pineapple. In the late 1980s, pineapples "crown" began to wither, and the industry no longer turned a profit. Now owned by Castle & Cooke Resorts, Lanai has reinvented itself as a one-of-a-kind vacation destination, with two upscale resorts and golf courses. Only about 100 acres of pineapple for local consumption remain on the island. Each summer, Lanai celebrates its unique heritage with the Pineapple Festival, a colorful event paying homage to the islands favorite fruit.
