Click here to vote RSS | Reprints | E-mail Alerts | Printable Version | Email Story December 23, 2003 Hawaii's cruise traffic grows There were 173,782 passengers cruising the Hawaiian islands in the first nine months of 2003 -- 3,000 or 2.3 percent more than the same period last year, according to data from the state Department of Business, Economic Development and Tourism. Brought to you by Cingular Cruise passengers now make up 3.5 percent of all visitors to the islands. Of them, 126,731 came by air to board cruise ships in Hawaii while 42,999 arrived on a cruise ship to tour the islands. So far this year, Hawaii has seen 92 cruise voyages, including 34 conducted on board Norwegian Cruise Line vessels. "Next year we are expecting more cruise visitors when Norwegian's Pride of America and Pride of Aloha homeport in Hawaii," said Marsha Wienert, the state's tourism liaison. Cruise-passenger onshore spending declined to $99 a day from $103.74 in the first nine months of 2002. The 4 percent drop is due primarily to lower spending by U.S. West and Canadian tourists. U.S. West tourists spent $86.63 per person this year compared to $98.68 for the corresponding 2002 period. Canadian visitors spent $96.21 ($102), U.S. East $106.90 ($106.12), and Europeans $96.14 ($96.13). There were 93,831 cruise passengers from the U.S. East Coast, down from 94,533 in 2002. Similarly, U.S. West passenger numbers declined by a few hundred. However, Canadian passenger numbers rose from 9,785 to 10,521, and Europeans grew from 3,056 to 4,216. More than 4,000 Hawaii residents cruised around the islands in the first nine months of this year, nearly 20 percent fewer than last year's figure of 4,996 people. Local cruise passengers spent $49 per person per day while on a cruise, about half of what nonresidents spend. Of the $49, they spent $15 on shore excursions, $11 on shopping and $5 on food and beverage. About those cruise visitors: Daily spending: $99. 'Aiea Bay State Recreation Area Off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy.) at McGrew Loop near Aloha Stadium, 'Aiea. Along the banks of Pearl Harbor's East Loch, the park offers picnicking opportunities. Views of Pearl Harbor and the Arizona Memorial. The Pearl Harbor bike path passes through the park. Diamond Head State Monument Brochure Off Diamond Head Road Between Makapu'u Avenue and 18th Avenue, Honolulu. Kukaniloko Birthstones State Monument Brochure At the intersection of Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 99) and Whitmore Avenue on the north side of Wahiawa. In early Hawai'i, this is where royalty came for the birth of their child to assure high-ranking status. The site consists of numerous stones within a grove of eucalyptus and coconut trees surrounded by pineapple fields. 5.0 acres La'ie Point State Wayside Off Kamehameha Highway (Hwy. 83) at La'ie town via Anemoku Street to end of Naupaka Street. Scenic views of offshore sea arch and seabird sanctuary island. Good shore fishing from sea cliffs at the point. Makapu'u Point State Wayside Off Kalaniana'ole Highway (Hwy. 72) from either Waimanalo or Hawai'i Kai. A 1-mile hike (one-way) along the former roadway to the lighthouse. At various points there are sweeping views of the southeastern O'ahu coastline - whales may be visible. Uphill climb to 500-foot elevation under hot, dry, and windy conditions. No drinking water or restrooms available. 38.2 acres Malaekahana State Recreation Area Off Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83), Malaekahana Beach: Kalanai Point Section 0.6 mile north of La'ie town; Kahuku Section 1.3 miles north of La'ie town. Wooded beach park with swimming, bodysurfing, beach-related activities and shore fishing. Picnicking and camping a Kalanai Point Section. Impressive view of windward O'ahu from brink of pali (cliffs) at 1200 feet elevation, Ko'olau Range. Winds are usually so strong that one can lean against the wall of wind. 3.0 acres Pu'u o Mahuka Heiau State Monument Brochure Off Pupukea Homestead Road (Highway 835) from Kamehameha Highway (Highway 83) across from Pupukea fire station. Viewing of O'ahu's largest heiau (place of worship), a low-walled court platform-type temple with two adjoining smaller independent structures. Reputed sacrifice site of Captain George Vancouver's watering party in 1793.
