Upon visiting the Koele lodge, I knew I had to come back someday. I went back 15 years later (last March) and got engaged there. The people of Lanai have not changed at all, they are friendliest people in all of Hawaii, embodying the essence of aloha. At the time of reservation, they asked if it was a special occasion. I told them of my planned engagement. The manager of the hotel made sure that a bottle of champage and chocolate covered strawberries (all complementary) were set up in our amazing room after coming back from proposing. The room was beautiful, overlooking the lake and golf course. The hotel and its property are phenomenal- championship golf course, putting green, shooting range, croquet, shuttle to Manele bay (beach) and downtown, biking, and much more. On top of this, you have a staff who accomodate your every desire and are always pleasant. I cannot say enough about how great the service is. Everyone was amazing. We weren't able to go on a honeymoon yet, but this engagement trip would cerrtainly be hard to top. The lodge at Koele is unlike any other Hawaii hotel, in that it is situated inland and has a rustic, "hunting-lodge" type feel. It is very serene and peaceful. My wife and I are looking forward to staying at the Koele lodge again. If you are looking to be close to the beach or be in a beach resort type setting, you should stay a its sister property the Manele Bay. Traveler rating: Lanai City: The Lodge at Koele : "Delightful Solitude" Feb 21, 2004 : A TripAdvisor Member, Minneapolis, MN Compare prices with: I stayed at this hotel in: February, 2004 My ratings for this hotel are: Rooms Service Value Cleanliness Dining Activities and gym Pool I traveled to this hotel with: boyfriend/girlfriend I recommend this hotel for: couples and romantics, honeymooners, active/adventure travelers My visit was for: leisure My wife and I stayed at the Lodge for a five night stay in February. We not only fell in love with the Lodge, but most absolutely with Lanai as well. The Lodge is the perfect base of operations to explore and experience magnificent Lanai. Where do I start? The shuttle to Manele Bay makes it easy to partake in any activities on the water - we went sea kayaking, SCUBA diving, snorkeling, etc - those activities were through Trilogy - whose staff was very polite and efficient. The shuttle ride between the two hotels is about 20 minutes. We also golfed at the lodge, played mini golf on the "executive putting course" and went horse back riding - all excellent. Reading reviews on this site had me greatly intimidated about food costs - luckily I did not book a meal plan at the lodge. I would strongly reccomend that you get out into Lanai city and enjoy some of the local restaurants. It is a nice walk into town, or you can catch the hotel shuttle into town. We ate at Pele's Other Garden, the Blue Ginger Cafe and Henry Clay's. All were excellent. The Blue Ginger was the least informal and also the cheapest. Our dinner for two at Pele's was $70 to give you an idea of prices. At the Lodge our informal dining room dinner tab was $90. Eating in town saved us some money, gave us greater variety in food and really let us interact with some local culture. The food at the Lodge while very good, was not excellent - I caution foodies that over an extended stay they may feel something is lacking (especially in selection). But let's remember, this is an island with just 3,000 people on it. Lastly, I also strongly reccomend renting a jeep and driving to some of the more secluded spots on the island - Polihua Beach is gorgeous. After an extended 4x4 required drive we found ourselves on a miles long beach with Humback whales frolicking off shore and one other car parked in the distance. The same was true of Shipwreck beach, where we snorkeled with about a dozen green sea turtles in the protected cove along shore. Lanai is quite simply a secluded gem - I will be back and I rarely consider repeating destinations. Traveler rating: Lanai City: The Lodge at Koele : "Highly recommend the Lodge at Koele" Nov 4, 2003 : A TripAdvisor Member, Madison, Wisconsin Compare prices with: My husband and I spent 3 days at The Lodge at Koele after a week on the north shore of Kauai. We have been to the other large Hawaiian islands, and decided to try Lanai for something different. Unlike the other Hawaiian resorts we have stayed at, this one was not on the beach and was not "glitzy." Instead, it is warm and sophisticated, something like an English country estate. We were greeted with leis, warm washcloths, and fresh pineapple juice. Our room was lovely and quiet. "Quiet" seems to describe The Lodge best; lots of wicker chairs on long porches for relaxing reading, tea in the "great room" every afternoon, and a quiet swimming pool. The grounds are large and beautifully landscaped; bring lots of film! We had not rented a car because we planned on using the free shuttle between Manele Bay, Lanai, and The Lodge. The shuttle was fine for this, but we decided we'd like a car for one day to see more of the island. (At $140/day for a Jeep, one day was enough!) However, there were none available, so I'd recommend reserving one for a day before you go. We also had trouble with our luggage. No problem getting to Lanai from Kauai, but our luggage didn't show up at home until 24 hours after we did. The airline said it had never been put on the plane in Lanai. Friends looking at my pictures ask if we were the only ones staying at The Lodge, because there aren't any other people in the pictures! We did take most of them early in the morning, but even so, don't expect crowds; this is a place for solitude and relaxation. But it's nice that you can also golf, snorkel, play putt-putt golf, lawn bowl, hike, or mingle with the natives in Lanai. But if you want to eat, bring your charge cards, because food at The Lodge, Manele Bay, and the Hotel Lanai is expensive. The only other choices are small local spots in Lanai. I would definitely return to The Lodge, but would stay 4-5 days and bring lots of good books! I wish I'd had more time to sit on the porch or by the pool! Traveler rating: Lanai City: The Lodge at Koele : "Loved Koele" Nov 2, 2003 : A TripAdvisor Member, Austin, TX Compare prices with: My husband and I will definitely go back to the Lodge at Koele. The hotel is completely different then anything else you will experience in Hawaii. The room was clean and large and the staff was excellent. No coffee makers in the rooms but the hotel provides better coffee down in a centrally located area. The hotel is so quiet that oftentimes you feel you are the only one there so it is no big deal to throw on a robe in the morning, get your coffee and enjoy it back on your private patio while listening to the birds in the morning. The property at Koele is lush and the hotel has many activities that customers can take part in. My husband and I are golfers and we think Koele is one of the best courses we have ever played. They have an executive 18-hole putting course that is fun to use even if you don't play golf. Koele is even better because they are affiliated with The Manele Bay Hotel so if you need some beach action there is a free shuttle that takes you back and forth between the two hotels. The Spa at Manele Bay will let you use one of their lockers in the spa if you need to store clothes there for the day but be aware they charge you for it. Be careful when you leave the airport. You travel on a small airplane and even though our two golf bags and two large suitcases made it over, when we were departing we were told we had too much luggage and we had to leave our clubs. It took 24 hours for our clubs to reach us in Kona which kind of messed up the tee times we had there. Bring plenty of money because meals are pricey! You can eat dinner one night in Lanai City but do not expect much, this is a very small island. I highly recommend the Lodge at Koele to anyone who wants privacy, 5-star service and accomendations. It is the primary hub for domestic overseas and interisland flights and is currently one of three State airports accommodating international flights. Honolulu International also functions as a joint military-civilian airport sharing airfield facilities with Hickam Air Force Base. The Airport occupies 2,216 acres of land and 2,210 acres of water about three miles west of Downtown Honolulu, and seven miles from Waikiki. The airfield consists of two parallel east-west runways, two parallel crosswind runways, associated taxiways and navigational aids. Facilities include a complex of general aviation, air cargo, and airport support facilities at the south Ramp near Ke'ehi Lagoon and the passenger terminal complex at the North Ramp. A complex of maintenance and air cargo facilities, principally for the interisland airlines, is located west of the terminal complex. In ancient times, Oahu was called the 'gathering place'. Voyaging canoes from all other islands would meet on Oahu's shores. Today Oahu is again the 'gathering place' that includes visitors from around the world. The voyaging concept, therefore, is particularly appropriate as a metaphor for travel in the Honolulu International Airport, the major airport of entry and departure for the Hawaiian Islands. It provides a link between the travel of the early Hawaiians and the visitor today.
