The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why. These delicate shells come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and even a rare blue. Whole families are involved in collecting the shells and carefully sorting them by size and color. The intricate craftsmanship that goes into a Niihau Shell Lei makes each one a prized possession. Plumeria Photos from Hawaii Plumeria is the most common flower that you'll find in Hawaii since it is used in most leis that are given to visitors. It is, however, not native to Hawaii. It is native to tropical and subtropical America. The flowers are found in colors of white, yellow, pink, red, and multiple pastels. In Hawaii one of the best places to view plumeria is at the Koko Crater Botanical Garden - a 60-acre basin inside Koko Crater on the eastern end of the island of Oahu. These plumeria photos are made available by Dr. Kent Bridges, Associate Professor of Botany, at the University of Hawaii. View the photos... Friday January 20, 2006 | permalink You Won't See This Sign at Home! This certainly isn't a sign that you've ever seen near your home or, in fact, anywhere else in the world. As reported in Monday's Maui News, state and federal agencies are posting new warning signs at harbors and boat ramps in Hawaii. They are doing this out of fear that more boating traffic increases the potential for collisions with humpback whales during the winter whale season. View a larger version of the sign and read the entire article in the Maui News. Read more... Having thoroughly enjoyed the tour on Oahu, I was expecting that I would also enjoy the Maui tour, but I didn't expect that I'd really enjoy it as much, if not more than the tour on Oahu. Tuesday January 10, 2006 | permalink Sheraton Maui Resort Special Packages for 2006 The Sheraton Maui Resort has announced their special packages for 2006. The Sheraton Maui is my personal favorite of the many fine Kaanapali Beach hotels and resorts. It's a top notch resort with a great staff and is certainly not hurt by its prime location at at the north end of Kaanapali Beach near Pu'u Keka'a, the famous Black Rock where the beach is the widest and the swimming and snorkeling are superb. This location gives Sheraton guests a unique sense of privacy. You never feel that you are nestled into an area with many other condominiums, hotels and resorts. Take a look at these specials for 2006. For all their similarity, each island has its own distinct personality. Like Hawaii, the big island, with Kilauea's crater where some say Pele, the fire goddess, lives. Maui, with remote swimming spots so beautiful, they were once reserved solely for Hawaiian royalty. And Honolulu, where the cliffs and waterfalls are often visited by spectacular rainbows. Yet there is one thing that all of these islands hold in common. It's called 'aloha,' the spirit of welcoming. back to featured cruises | back to top of page About Us | Security | Privacy | News | Affiliates | Travel Agents ©2002-2003 CruiseDirect, Inc. On Molokai, for example, you wont find traffic lights, elevators, neon signs or fast food wars. The pristine stretches of white sand beaches are just like the islands streets: uncrowded and blissfully quiet. On Molokai, nothings taller than a palm tree. Molokai is one of those rare destinations where time has stood still. This does not mean that the island is lacking for things to see and do. Far from it. Although 260 square miles in size, Molokai is rich in history and sheer natural beauty. Start on the islands northern coast, home to the worlds tallest sea cliffs. Take the a world-famous mule ride down to Kalaupapa National Historical Park, the historic settlement where Father Damien de Veuster once ministered to natives stricken with Hansens Disease (leprosy). Nature lovers shouldnt pass up the opportunity to hike through the Kamakou Preserve, a lush mountain forest filled with endangered native plants and rare birds. At the center of the island is Kaunakakai , Molokais largest town, where you can meet the local folk and browse the smattering of mom-and-pop stores. Just up north is Palaau State Park, where you can get an up-close look (but maybe not too close) at Kauleonanahoa, the legendary "Phallic Rock." According to legend, if a woman goes to Kauleonanahoa with offerings and spends the night there, she will return home pregnant. On the west side is Kaluakoi, Molokais principal resort area. Here, youll find Papohaku Beach, the largest white sand beach (three miles) in Hawaii. Each May, Papohaku Beach Park is the setting for the Molokai Ka Hula Piko, the islands biggest cultural festival celebrating the birth of the hula . Hawaiian legend says that Laka, the goddess of the hula, gave birth to the Hawaiian dance on a sacred hill in Kaana. It was on this hill that the Hawaiians learned hula of every kind.
