Later, introduced to the fabrics and sewing techniques of American missionaries, islanders developed the elaborate appliqud flower, leaf and vine designs that have become the hallmark of a "Hawaiian quilt." Today, quilts are being made throughout Hawai'i by women and men of all ages, professions and ethnicities who stitch away in quilt shops, in classes and at home. Many of today's quiltmakers combine design motifs from the past with creative ideas of their own, producing textiles as unique as the artists themselves. Helen Friend is one Hawai'i artist whose quilts reflect current events and contemporary vision. A passionate needlewoman since the age of five, it wasn't until 1985 that she discovered quilting as a form of expression. While her large quilts and hangings honor traditional patterns, she prefers to explore her own ideas and create something totally new. "Every quilt should have a reason behind it; that's where the mana (spiritual power) comes in," says Friend. Friend has drawn inspiration from the challenges of major competitions, from nature's power, from news articles, from conservation work on historic textiles, and from class assignments at the University of Hawai'i fiber arts program. Since her first quilt 10 years ago, Friend has tried to make a quilt a year to enter in local, juried mixed-media exhibitions. Her first piece, Liberty Quilt, represented Hawai'i at the Great American Quilt Festival in 1986, a competitive show held in New York to celebrate the Statue of Liberty Centennial. After Liberty Quilt, Friend turned her attention homeward and created a series of quilts that originate in traditional Hawaiian quilt motifs but depart from rigid convention. Her latest creation is Red Wall, hand-sewn in reverse appliqu. Says the artisan, "The idea first came from a color combination I saw a few years ago. But as I began to work, the catastrophe of Rwanda unfolded. And as I finished the project, the war in Bosnia continued. I like to think that each stitch recognizes a life lost." No matter what project shes involved in, its clear that Friend loves her work. "To me," she says with a satisfied smile, "quilting is a most satisfying way of recording my life." HONOLULU - Commercial fishing has sharply depleted numbers of several species in the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands and threatens the health of the pristine island chain's ecosystem, according to a private study released Monday. Populations of the opakapaka, or Hawaiian pink snapper, have plummeted 90 percent in 10 years, according to the Ocean Conservancy and the Marine Conservation Biology Institute. Stocks of the hapu'upu'u, or the Hawaiian grouper, have sunk 64 percent over the same period in the 1,200 miles of islands and atolls northwest of Kauai, according to the study. "There is little doubt they are being depleted far below a state of ecological health," said Dennis Heinemann, one of the study's authors. Fishery council disagrees The federal body responsible for fishing rules around the island chain criticized the study as biased against fishing. The study used simple proxies rather than true estimates of fish populations, said Paul Dalzell, the senior scientist for the Western Pacific Fishery Management Council. "That is a selective and partisan use of the information by the organizations," he said. "It is not a peer-reviewed scientific publication. It is purely their own interpretation of the information." Nine bottomfishers working around the Northwestern Hawaiian Islands, primarily in federal waters, bring in a catch worth about $1.5 million each year. Refuge created Last month, Gov. Linda Lingle declared state waters around the islands a marine refuge and banned fishing three miles from the islands' shorelines. The National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration is planning to designate the area the country's 14th National Marine Sanctuary and U.S. Rep. Ed Case, D-Hawaii, has proposed banning fishing in the area. The fishing report is online at www.oceanconservancy.org . 2006 The Associated Press. All rights reserved. Location: Haena, North Kauai, Kauai, Hawaii, USA Accommodations: House - 3 Bedrooms - 3 Baths - (Sleeps 6) Photo 1 - Haena, Kauai, HI - Hawaii Vacation Rental This three bedroom, three full-bath Haena house sits right in the middle of the most spectacular 5-mile strech of ocean in all of Hawaii, Kauai's north shore. The house sits less than 250 feet from the ocean's edge, and a five-minute walk along the sand will bring you to Tunnels, one of the best snorkeling and swimming beaches in Kauai, and perhaps the most beautiful beach in all of Hawaii. Kee beach, equally stunning, is a two mile drive from the house, as is Lumahai beach. The home is modern, fully furnished with all your vacation needs, and provides 1600 square feet of comfortable living, easily large enough for a family, yet cozy enough for a romantic getaway. Two of the bedrooms have queen-sized beds, while the third bedroom has a pair of twin beds. In addition, one of the bedrooms has a separate kitchen and bath, as well as a separate entrance, providing plenty of privacy for two couples, or for a family. Two huge oudoor lanais help to bring the dramatic surroundings right into the home - of course, a hammock is included in this picture! Hear the ocean waves and feel those breezy trade winds (and see peeks of the ocean) from the huge outdoor lanai which faces the ocean, or view dramatic Mt. Manoa and it's waterfalls from the other large lanai. Swim with the sea turtles at Kee beach, two miles down the road, or lounge at Lumahai beach two miles back the other way. A 10-minute drive takes you to Hanalei, where you can enjoy fine dining, rent beach gear, etc. The beaches in front of the house are also well-known for their variety of seashells. The house is located between the mile 8 and mile 9 markers, and sits at the end of a small cul-de-sac. The house faces the ocean and is well off the road and away from any road noise. The start of the Kaulau trail and the Na Pali coast is two miles from the house, as is Kee beach. This area of Kauai is truly a spectacular place to vacation, well away from the noise of the city, in almost entirely undeveloped area of Hawaii. I walked in the other night and there wasn’t a single customer inside. Then after I told the cashier I was dining in, she gave me two takeout boxes. When I asked for a tray, she looked at me like I was speaking a foreign language! She kept repeating the word “tray,” trying to make some sense of it. The cook/owner finally gave her a styrofoam plate which I accepted in defeat. What Eddie Flores needs to do is visit some of his restaurants unannounced. I’m sure he has enough pride to put some effort into training his employees.
