MeatHenge: Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches « Holidays over, Farmer's Market back, Fatted Calf returns! | Main | World's Best BBQ Grills - Denver Colorado » Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ - Plate Lunches Posted by Biggles on January 06, 2005 This semi-new local restaurant, Wailiki Hawaiian BBQ, has sparked easily the most heated discussion amoung our immediate circle of friends & family. Apparently my sister and her husband, Mr. & Mrs. Meathead visited this place a month ago and were served nearly inedible food. The food I received was worth returning to. My co-worker EarAche wasn't impressed with the one in Hercules, the L&L Hawaiian BBQ . Why do these two restaurants have identical menus? Why are there no vegetables? Except for the strands of cabbage under the fried food? I've never been to Hawaii and it took a few days to sort things out. For those of you concerned, it's called Plate Lunch. No matter what the restaurant's name is, it's called Plate Lunch. You expect a scoop of rice or two and a scoop of macky salad. After that it's up to you how it gets filled. Amound the top seller is the Chicken Katsu, a flatted chicken patty that's breaded then deep fried. This was quite tasty and I had absolutely no problem eating it. But remember, if you order the regular meal you're getting enough food for two VERY hungry people. There's a mini version available, I would highly suggest you start there. And I mean it. I'm 6'2" and 215 lbs and the regular was clearly too much, even to stuff myself silly. All for $5.50 (sans the soda). My sister ordered the BBQ Short Ribs and ended up leaving most if not all of it on the table. I can understand that, Beef Short Ribs are a fatty faire and if not cooked really long and really slow can be highly nasty to injest, or not as the case may be. Mr. Meathead ordered the Deep Fried Shrimp Regular meal. Again, not a happy camper and left it all there for the waitress to dispose of. I can understand it, most breaded shrimp meals are small shrimp with some breaded coating that ends up being most of your meal. This is no good, which is why I don't order the breaded deep fried shrimp when I attend these eateries. Just something to take note of for the future, eh? The Loco Moco sounds interesting, I may try it in the future or make it at home. It's a homemade hamburger steak & egg with gravy, interesting. Another possibility might be the Saimin (noodle soup) or one of their breakfasts, Spam with Eggs & Rice. Hey man, don't laugh. The Hawaiians consume the greatest amounts of spam, it can be just fine when done correctly. Do you want to try the Spam Musubi? I dunno. I ordered the Mahi Mahi Plate Lunch today, it was 'okay'. But I wouldn't order it again. Big D says that is just pre-battered fish from a bag. I agree. That was a large Nope. Probably be even a larger something else later on. Big D ordered the Teriyaki Plate Lunch. He says, "It wasn't really bad, it wasn't really good." Okay, I'll buy that. But keep in mind, he's been to Hawaii many times and has homemade teriyaki sauce made special. He knows the full spectrum of how good it can get. As of today the way to go would be either the Chicken Katsu Lunch Plate or the Kalua Pork Lunch Plate (a daily special). The Kalua Pork is a smoked pulled pork meat plate with a light sauce of some kind, almost can't tell it's on there. I'd eat it every day it's so good. No fat or craziness going on, just full on pulled pork that smells as good as it tastes. Kersmakyumbo. To sum it all up, these Hawaiian Plate Lunch eateries can be a mixed bag of goodies. Pay attention to what you're ordering and remember to go home and eat a salad right away. Ask around too, since they are all not of the same franchise you could very well run across a real gem such as Zippy's based in the Hawaiian Islands (Thank you Big D for the tip). Xo Xo Waikiki Hawaiian BBQ 9935 San Pablo Avenue El Cerrito, CA 94530 510-558-6928 or Concord Location 1680 E Willow Pass Road Concord, CA 94520 925-798-8002 Posted by Biggles at January 6, 2005 02:44 PM Comments Happy New Year, Dr B! SoCal has seen a lot of Hawaiian restaurants open up in the last year or 2, too. Spam Musubi is best made fresh, like you see at potlucks, not wrapped in plastic like L&L sells theirs. Only my teenage son (aka "The Bottomless Pit") will order it on occasion for a quick bite. He usually gets the Loco Moco with just rice cuz he doesn't like the mac salad. I usually get the BBQ plate and have the rest to nuke at work the next day. Hubby and I both like the Chicken Katsu or BBQ Chicken at these places. Where do you work that you can fry up some chicken??? I wanna work there! Best I could do at my work was share the calories over the holidays with my cookies, candy and homemade Sweet Chex Mix. Posted by: Aileen at January 7, 2005 10:23 AM Thanks, Happy New Year to yerself. I don't get out much and really pretty much keep to myself. So, it takes me a while to find new restaurants and to see what's been going on around me. Turns out I'm usually a year or two behind. It's something I've learned to deal with over the years. I keep myself busy fying chicken at work! Uh yeah, this is a pretty low-key place to work. Plus I've been here a long long time, nearly 15 years. So, if I want to fry chicken for everyone, they let me. I have electric skillets, toasters and other things here as well. I haven't done much cooking here lately, but I used to make breakfasts for everyone. You know, eggs, toast, bacon and/or ham steak. I also used to have a charcoal fired grill here, took it home though. Boy, having a huge pile of freshly grilled meatses sure is nice to have during the week at lunch. I think I stopped doing it because it isn't really convenient. Cleaning up is tough, plus I have to answer the phone from time to time. The customers just don't understand being put on hold so I can flip the bacon. Biggles Posted by: Dr. Biggles at January 7, 2005 10:57 AM Post a comment Name: Email Address: URL: Remember Me? What kind of Kauai activities would you recommend for my honeymoon on Kauai? What is unique about a honeymoon on Kauai? Kauai, the oldest island in the Hawaiian Islands, is often called the "Garden Isle" for it's lush, tropical landscape. There is a wide variety of honeymoon options on Kauai. You can stay in a beautiful Kauai resort, a quaint Kauai bed and breakfast or a Kauai condo or Kauai vacation rental. Look at all your lodging options on Kauai before making a decision. There is a great deal in every price range, so feel free to call us or any of our partners to find out about current specials, packages and promotions. Kauai is a rural island, that still retains the feel of "Old Hawaii". While the island is developing, it has only one main road that stretches from Polihale Beach on the West side to the "end of the road" on the North Shore, at Ke'e State Park. This road takes you through the various small towns of Kauai, each with their own unique history, heritage and flavor. Kauai is an ideal honeymoon destination for the discriminating couple who also appreciate the beauty of the outdoors. It is a rugged island, yet beautiful in a way that is truly hard to put in words. The beaches of Kauai are among the most stunning in the world, and offer many incredible backdrops for your Kauai honeymoon romance. What is a typical Kauai honeymoon like? There truly is not a "typical" Kauai honeymoon, as the options on the island are so diverse. Honeymoon itineraries on Kauai range from five star elegancy to rustic jungle cottages with solar power. Let us know about yourself and your fiancée, and we will work with you to decide upon the most ideal Kauai honeymoon itinerary for your tastes and budget. Are there packages available for my Kauai honeymoon that are all inclusive? Honeymoon packages on Kauai are not all-inclusive in the same way many honeymoon packages are in other regions such as Tahiti or the Caribbean. However, Preview Hawaii can help you arrange a Kauai honeymoon itinerary that covers all the major bases, so the only decisions you need to make after coming to Kauai is where to eat dinner and what shopping to do! Go through all of the Kauai honeymoon options on Preview Hawaii and call us with any questions you have about this very special once in a lifetime trip! Should I use a travel planner or plan my Kauai honeymoon on my own? You are certainly capable of planning your own Kauai honeymoon with extensive research and time. However, you may not have that time as you are also planning for the wedding and running your normal life. An experience travel planner in Hawaii can present you with options that are based on first hand experience of Hawaii, and the knowledge of the best possible values in every price bracket in Hawaii. Though Preview Hawaii is a very extensive resource in planning your honeymoon on Kauai, we could never replace the personalized service of a honeymoon planner. How do I get to Kauai? All flights into Kauai fly into Lihue Airport. There are a few direct mainland flights that arrive each day, primarily American and United flying in from San Francisco and Los Angeles. However, there are many flights to and from the other major Hawaiian Islands every day, and many visitors come into Kauai through a mainland flight into Honolulu, and then a small inter-island flight to Kauai. Do I need to rent a car when I get to Kauai? It is STRONGLY recommended that you rent a car on Kauai! The island is very rural, and the towns, activities and attractions are spaced far apart. Public transportation is very limited and time consuming. How far in advance should I plan my honeymoon on Kauai? Planning for a Hawaii honeymoon can be done in less than six months, but many begin planning as early as a year prior. If you need help planning your honeymoon on Kauai, please call our toll free number at 866-773-8844. What time of year is best for a Kauai honeymoon? The great thing about Kauai is that the weather is very mild and temperate year round! There are of course weather differences on each side of the island, and within the many microclimates of Kauai, but on any given day there is a warm, sunny beach on at least one side of the island! So, you really can feel comfortable planning your honeymoon on Kauai any time of year. The sub-tropical weather can be unpredictable, and as we say in Hawaii, "no rain, no rainbows!" so be prepared for some changing weather. Is it common to visit more than one Hawaiian Island on my honeymoon? It is very common to visit at least two islands in Hawaii for your honeymoon in Hawaii. The islands of Hawaii are so diverse, and each is a very different experience. While Kauai is rural, slow and oriented towards the outdoors, many of the other islands are busier and more cosmopolitan. The best step in beginning to plan your honeymoon in Hawaii is calling us at 866-773-8844 (toll free on Kauai) to discuss your dream honeymoon in Hawaii. After asking you a few questions about you and your fiancée, your interests and your budget, we can put together a custom Hawaii honeymoon proposal that will based on your needs. How much is inter-island airfare in Hawaii? Are there other ways to get from island to island? Unfortunately, inter-island airfare in Hawaii has risen in price recently. The inter-island air segments are now sold only as one way tickets, and are $75.00 each at the cheapest, usually closer to $90.00 each way. Here at Preview Hawaii we are able to get more affordable rates through Hawaiian Airlines. Call us toll free at 866-773-8844 to get a quote on inter-island airfare! W hat kind of Kauai activities would you recommend for my honeymoon on Kauai? Kauai is ideal for nature lovers and adventurers. The oldest island in the Hawaiian Island chain, Kauai is a lush garden of outdoor adventures. Activities on Kauai include helicopter tours of Kauai, Kauai boat trips, snorkeling adventures, Kauai hiking trails, luau's and other exciting adventures on Kauai. The Bottom Line Terrific alternative to burgers and pizzas, the BBQ meat is healthier because it is less oily, too! Full Review Tired of burgers, pizzas and Gyros? Find Yoshinoya annoying? Eating at the Ono Then it’s time for ONO’s HAWAIIAN BBQ! Located in a ubiquitous two storey strip mall on the corner of Santa Monica and Bundy on the boundary between West LA and Santa Monica, this year old fast food is quickly becoming a magnet food outlet drawing both the multitude of students, professionals, and families who live nearby. My family drives from Pasadena (20 miles east) to get out BBQ from here. While chatting with some of the other patrons, I found a couple who drove from Long Beach (15 miles south) to get the food. Ono is Hawaiian for delicious. And that only starts to describe this wonderful food. This is a fast food restaurant, so the walk up counter and food ordering procedure is exactly the same as a KFC or Carl’s Jr. The menu is displayed on a neon lit board behind the cashier. The kitchen can be seen through the opening where the food passes. What’s to Eat? The food choices are simple: BBQ or rice bowls. But it is in the combination of the BBQ’s and rice dishes that this restaurant really amazes. The restaurant specializes in “plate lunches”. This is a classic Hawaiian meal made up of Asian and Island dishes, including Kalbi short ribs (Korean), Mahi Mahi (Hawaiian fish), BBQ Chicken (Chinese style), Chicken Katsu (deep fried breaded Japanese style chicken), accompanied by macaroni salad and steamed rice. The restaurant’s menu proclaims this to be “the de facto meal of choice in Hawaii and the best representation of the blend of cuisine and multi-cultures found in Hawaii. The meal takes a little while to get there because the meat is barbequed after you order, so everything is freshly cooked and not reheated in a microwave. But is it worth the wait! The Kalbi short ribs still had that smoky carmelization on the bones. At the time of this writing, this combination costs $6.69. And the portions are huge. The lunch plate fed me and my six year old and two year old, and had enough left over to share with my wife, who had ordered a more modest dish of Maui Pineapple Chicken. We’ve never made it to Hawaii, but if this is what they eat there every day, it’s no wonder that the Hawaiians dominate the Japanese Sumo championships. There are other dishes, including a curry chicken over rice, Salmon, Hamburgers, Caesar salad, Seafood Noodle Soup, the ever present Teriyaki Chicken bowl, and an appetizer intriguingly called Spam Musubi. Unfortunately, I couldn’t even con my one year old daughter into trying THAT one. “C’mon honey, it’s made with your favorite: pork!” She just turned away and started running for her mother. So I will have to update you on this one after I’ve starved myself enough to want to try it. The Restaurant and the Service The restaurant has a nice high ceiling, cafeteria seating, and is well lighted, and not that full. It is very clean. Most of the people sitting around were waiting for their take out. We took about 20 minutes to eat, but there must have been at least 20 take away orders during that same period. The Korean counter girls were nice enough and even substituted the rice for macaroni (for my kids), but they definitely looked over worked. They are one of the few Asian fast food places that take credit cards. And the county health inspection report is a proudly displayed “A”. What’s Not to Like Well, the parking can be difficult. The forecourt of the strip mall features only 10 minute surface parking and the narrowest and smallest basement parking ramp in LA. Not recommended if you are driving anything larger than a Chrysler Neon. It would also be nice if they had a few more of these around the city, perhaps with a drive through window. You know, for those of us who are too Hawaiian to get out of our cars. Recommended Yes Kid Friendliness: Yes Vegetarian Friendly: No Notes, Tips or Menu Recommendations Get the Lunch Plates: 3 BBQ meats with sides of macaroni and rice. Try the Salmon. Hawaiian Quilt," by Laurie

Honolulu Star-Bulletin Features Advertisement - Click to support our sponsors. Thursday, February 17, 2000 Margaret Wood Margaret Wood found inspiration for this quilt in the jewelry of Hopi artist Charles Loloma. The quilt hangs against a black backdrop. Indians first made quilts with European patterns, but have since incorporated traditional tribal designs. Quilt show honors Native American tradition By Cynthia Oi Star-Bulletin WHY did primitive humans peck at rocks to form bowls, then take the time to decorate them with patterns and lines on the outside? Some, like Margaret Wood, believe such labor stems from the desire to create. So it is with Wood and other artists who have transformed utilitarian bedspreads into beauteous quilts that will be displayed at Bishop Museum. "To Honor and Comfort: Native Quilting Traditions" is a traveling exhibit of the Smithsonian Institution. It showcases 45 quilts by Indian and Hawaiian textile artists and quilting groups from across the United States. "Native quilting happened as the westward movement of Anglos happened," said Wood, a Navajo-Seminole who came to the islands to present a lecture and to help with the exhibit. "The lifestyle changed for Native Americans as they were conquered and subdued," Wood said, and as the animals whose hides traditionally served as blankets and clothing were killed off. At the same time, manufactured fabrics became available and Indian women began to learn to use them instead. By Ken Sakamoto, Star-Bulletin Margaret Wood poses with a mixed media quilt she calls "Hand." The dots are mother-of-pearl disks, which also decorate her dress. "The wives of military men and missionaries started giving the women sewing lessons at the forts and missions, and provided them with manufactured cotton and wool," she said. At first, Indians made quilts with European patterns, but over time, they began incorporating tribal designs that they had been using in beadwork or other media, Wood said. "For instance, the Odawa quilt, one of the oldest in the show, has the lone-star design, but the corners and the triangular areas are filled with a floral design that's common to the Odawa people. So the missionary design is combined with traditional tribal design." While there are fine examples of antique quilts made by European Americans, few native quilts have survived. Anglo women could afford to make quilts that were purely decorative, Wood said. "They tended to make a very special quilt out of satin and expensive fabrics and they would save them for an heirloom and they would only bring them out on Sunday when the preacher came to dinner. "But the native people lived much closer to the Earth. I believe there were many heirloom quality quilts made, but the native people didn't have the economics. If there was a bad winter and you weren't able to get the buffalo hides or deer hides for bed coverings, you couldn't hold on to that heirloom quilt. Your babies were cold." As quilts became part of the Indian household, different tribal groups gave the quilt different significance, she said. Not only were they items of comfort, they became gifts of honor. At an Indian school in South Dakota, for example, each member of the graduating class is presented with a quilt. Margaret Wood "Charlie Wood's Stoma Quilt" honors Margaret Wood's father, who had radiation therapy for throat cancer. The line border represents cigarettes, the hands, people who had helped him. "The mothers take it upon themselves to make sure that every graduate has a quilt draped on their chair when they come in for the ceremony," Wood said. If the child doesn't have a mother or a person who sews in the family, other mothers will make one for the graduate. "It's honoring them. It is a significant gift," she said. Hopi culture requires a naming ceremony for a new infant. As part of that, each female member of the baby's family presents the child with a naming quilt. "If the baby has a large family, the baby may be given 20 naming quilts. So you'll see pictures of this big pile of quilts around this tiny baby. But that's part of their culture now, part of their ceremony," Wood said. She became a member of the planning committee for the exhibit in the mid-1990s, but the idea for the show began more than a decade ago. Getting grant money, deciding the focus and parameters of the exhibit and putting together a well-researched companion book took much of the time. An Arizona native, Wood, 50, mother of two boys, has degrees in teaching and library science. She had a successful business selling contemporary clothing adapted from Indian designs when she took up quilting as a sideline. "I found that the quilts were a much more creative thing. There was less marketing and more creativity." In 1990, she switched the emphasis of her business, "and I'm really glad that I did. I'm having a lot of fun with quilts." Her pieces aren't for spreading across the mattress; she designs them to be hung on walls and each has a reason for being. One is called "Charlie Wood's Stoma Quilt," and honors her father. At the center of the quilt is a plastic mask that was used in her father's radiation therapy after he was diagnosed with throat cancer. "The doctor offered it to my father, but he didn't want it, so I took it," she said. Red and white borders representing the lighted cigarettes that caused the cancer surround imprints of hands. "They are helping hands, actual tracings from some of the people who helped him get back on his feet," she said. "Quilts all have stories."
