Needlework isn't just the realm of women, as a new exhibit of quilts at the Mission Houses Museum demonstrates By Burl Burlingame Star-Bulletin NOW that women can captain B-52s -- and can get cashiered out of the service for being as dumb as a man -- is it any surprise that men are sewing quilts? Some of the best of local man-made quilts go on display tomorrow at the Mission Houses Museum in a show called "Na Kapa Kuiki Hawai'i Na Ka Lima Kane (Hawaiian Quilts by Men's Hands)." Hawaiian quilting as a folk-art tradition began with the thrifty missionaries recycling scraps of cloth, and eventually became a way for women to express themselves artistically. Quilting can be done either as a solitary activity or with many hands helping simultaneously. Anselm Lum, 82, always liked doing needlepoint and needlework to keep his fingers busy, and enjoyed "art day" at Central Grammar School when the kids turned flour sacks into decorative hand towels using basic cross-stitching. He eventually became a carpenter and a school construction inspector. By Craig T. When wife Helen took a class in Hawaiian quilting in the 1970s, Lum picked up an unfinished project and finished it. Since then, he figures he's spent 13,000 hours quilting, usually while Helen worked in the evenings. "It's just therapy for me," he said. "I'm retired, so I only work mornings. I don't want to be a couch potato! And there's nothing on TV to watch anyways." By Sharon Balai, special to the Star-Bulletin Kimo Balai, a young quilter at 45, is caught tending to his craft in this photo taken by his wife, Sharon. Lum's designs are traditional -- "I'm not trying to influence anyone!" -- and he figures the only method he uses that's different is the old carpenter's dictum to measure twice, cut once. "I do a lot of measurements. Some quilters do it by eye. Not me. I plot mine out." Stan Yates, 51, a government expert on disabilities on Kauai, was "blown away" by the beauty and precise construction of Hawaiian quilts, and devoured every book he could find on the subject in the Lihue library. He began quilting in 1986, and by 1988 won a blue ribbon at the Kauai County Fair for a baby quilt design. He likes making quilts in which the positive and negative spaces are interlocked, like a Escher print, and in his spare time demonstrates quilting techniques at Kauai hotels. By Craig T. Younger quilters include Kimo Balai, 45, a lineman for the Hawaii Electric Light Company who lives in Kamuela, Hawaii, and Lincoln Okita, 46, a Honolulu probation officer. Balai's wife Sharon joined Ka Hui Kapa 'Apana O Waimea, a Big Island quilting group, in 1985, and Balai began paying dues so that he could partake in the refreshments brought by the women (the way to a man's hands is through his stomach?). A few years later, he became interested enough to learn, and since then has completed three quiltS. His first, called "Mai Poina 'Oe I'au (Don't You Forget Me)" was designed by Sharon to remind him that he is always on his busy wife's mind. Okita began quilting in 1981, also as a husband-wife activity, when he and wife Jo Malmstrom-Okita were living on a Sioux reservation in South Dakota, and they became determined to make a Sioux star-quilt together for their bed. Okita began Hawaiian quilting in 1990 after seeing Elizabeth Akana's TV show about Hawaiian quilting techniques. The precise stitching and obvious progress at the end of each session allows the quilter to get into a Zen zone of concentration, like a meditative state. "Quilting is my stress-reducer and provides me with a sense of concrete accomplishment that you usually don't get from social work," said Okita. By Craig T. I mean, why freeze yer butt off and thrash around in polluted waters when you can fall in hundreds of times in the cushy waters of paradise. Maui's warm water, and consistent winds make for the most user friendly sailing on the planet. These days, windsurfing instructors are finely tuned in the art of getting you where you want to be. Our wavesailing and looping classes are taught wherever conditions are best. our school and instructors are completely mobile in order to better serve our clientele. When lava enters the ocean, the intense heat produces a plume cloud with dangerous and potentially life threatening toxic gases, super heated steam, and hydrochloric acid. New law revives Hawaiian cruise industry The Omnibus Appropriations Bill passed by the U.S. Congress on February 13, 2003, includes a provision that will mark the rebirth of the Hawaiian cruise industry. Ever since the bankruptcy of American Classic Voyages following the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks, only cruise ships arriving from foreign ports, or arriving from mainland ports which also include a stop in non-U.S. territory, have been permitted to make port calls in Hawaii. These restrictions stem from a series of laws enacted in the 1920's commonly referred to as the Jones Act. Among other things the laws require that only American owned ships transport goods and people between American ports. These laws have continually been supported by Congress and U.S. Presidents. Unfortunately, however, gone are the days where there were cruise ships owned by American companies and sailing under U.S. flags. For primarily tax benefits and cost savings reasons such as crew salaries, even cruise lines headquartered in the United States elect to flag their ships in foreign countries, such as Panama and Liberia. The effect of the Jones Act and the lack of American flagged cruise ships has been that cruises totally within the Hawaiian Islands have been virtually non-existent. From 1980 until 2001, only three ships ships have cruised exclusively in the Hawaiian Islands, the S.S. Independence, the S.S. Constitution and, for a short time the M.S. Patriot, all owned by American Hawaiian Cruises, a subsidiary of American Classic Voyages. Cruises exclusively in the Hawaiian Islands ended with the aforementioned bankruptcy of American Classic Voyages. Since that time, several cruise lines have sailed intermittently in Hawaiian waters, all of which include calls of port in a foreign country. Many actually depart from Canada or Mexico. Norwegian Cruise Line, which is based in Miami, has been the leader in Hawaiian cruises since 2001. Their ship, the Norwegian Star, however, makes a trip to Fanning Island in the Republic of Kiribati on each of its inter-island cruises. The recently passed bill, will allow Norwegian to eliminate this extra stop and cruise exclusively within the waters of Hawaii. Under the terms of the bill, Norwegian Cruise Line will be permitted to sail foreign-built ships under a U.S. flag in Hawaii waters. Opponents to the bill, under pressure from rival cruise lines, required that the bill include a provision that these newly flagged ships will not transport passengers in revenue service to ports in Alaska, the Gulf of Mexico or the Caribbean Sea. In addition, no federal money will be used in this project. Norwegian plans to finish building overseas two partly built cruise ships destined for Hawaii under American Classic Voyages' failed ship building initiative which was called "Project America," and then sail them exclusively in Hawaii. It also allows the cruise line to re-flag an additional cruise ship (the Norwegian Star) already in operation. In an additional boon to the Hawaiian economy and tourist industry, the bill requires Norwegian to employ American crews to man the ships. Norwegian has promised that a majority of the hiring will be with Hawaii residents.
