I tried this place due to the reviews below...the transplanted hawaiians may not have possessed a good palate in the first place...not recommended. Would you really order rice AND potato salad if you had a choice? The problem is that too much of the menu is "sort of" Japanese, so it seems not quite right, though it may be very authentic Hawaiian. I came thinking I would get a good hawaiian BBQ like those I had enjoyed while a college freshman in Honolulu, but the BBQ chicken here is not even close. Ask anyone from Hawaii what they miss the most about home and the response is usually "the food". I can't tell you how happy I was to discover that L&L has come to Manhattan! My mouth waters everytime I think about it. They also have Portuguese sausage, which any local knows is a staple to a true local breakfast. I've eaten everything on the menu and I have to agree about the saimin, not the true local style. My only complaint...the one on 8th ave doesn't always play Hawaiian music. Posted by Carmela on 05/26/2005 The Perfect Lunch I'm always looking for tasty, fast, cheap food to have for lunch and when I saw this new restaurant I was a little skeptic of the claims on the flyers stuck on its window but the food looked delicious and the prices reasonable. The first time there I ordered the Luau special because it reminded me of my trip to Hawaii years earlier and wanted to experience that wonderful meal again. I was not disappointed! The food was way too much for me and I couldn't eat everything (that's the largest meal on the menu, I think) and felt very guilty because I'm trying to lose some weight. Unfortunately, the food in this place is addictive! Yes, it's that good! On my next trip I ordered a simple meal of barbecue chicken (the small size) which comes with a generous scoop of rice, a scoop of macaroni salad, and a small salad. Again, the meal was delicious. Needless to say, I have visited the restaurant again and again. You do have to wait a little while for the food but that's because it's cooked fresh. It's worth the wait. One complaint: my diet is shot! I couldn't wait to rush on over and have my first Hawaiian-style "plate lunch" in this fast-paste city. I loved the Lau Lau combo and especially the barbecue combo! I still can't believe how inexpensive they are. You really get alot of food for the bucks! I'll be going back for more of the Hawaiian-type fare but I have one bone of contention concerning my ultimate favorite local food...saimin. I ordered "your" saimin at the Fulton branch and I was very disappointed with it to say the least. The thought that I might finally have found a place that serves the kind of ramen one would get back home made me salivate at knowing that now that there's an L & L here I won't have to wait till my next visit to Hawaii to satisfy my cravings. The noodles were the type from your local Chinatown restaurant (more like spaghettinistraight and tastless) as for the soup base, it tasted like water with very little flavor. As for the "styrofoam" containers...This is the way a plate lunch should be served if it even wants to pretend its authentic. That's da kine...that's how we like it thats why...li' dat. Whether you eat in or take out it is served to go so you can take the rest...you know like if you go to a party and ''make one plate'' when you leave. This is where I had my first experience with Hawaiian style plate lunch several years ago. I used to live down the street, and would stop in quite frequently. There are many islanders in this area. So, you can imagine that this place is always packed. Since, John and I often share food we usually have to agree on what we are going to eat. We decided on two Katsu Musubi and a mini plate of Barbecue Chicken. The musubi was perfect. The nori was crisp to the very end, even with the generous helping of tasty gravy in the rice. The Barbecue Chicken was very moist and flavorful. The macaroni salad is the best here. I love mixing the rice and the macaroni salad in the together. Makes my tummy happy. This L&L has malasadas on special occasions, but it’s been awhile. I hear that there will be a new L&L in Renton shortly. That is, the more freedom, the greater the human security and the less the violence. Conversely, the more power governments have, the more human insecurity and violence. In short: to our realization that power impoverishes we must also add that power kills. Through theoretical analysis, historical case studies, empirical data, and quantitative analyses, this web site shows that: uote Freedom is a basic human right recognized by the United Nations and international treaties, and is the heart of social justice. Freedom is an engine of economic and human development, and scientific and technological advancement. Freedom ameliorates the problem of mass poverty. Free people have the least internal violence, turmoil, and political instability. Free people have virtually no government genocide and mass murder, and for good theoretical reasons. Freedom is a method of nonviolence--the most peaceful nations are those whose people are free. Just to give perspective on this incredible murder by government, if all these bodies were laid head to toe, with the average height being 5', then they would circle the earth ten times. Also, this democide murdered 6 times more people than died in combat in all the foreign and internal wars of the century.
