Gary French, Scot, Jim and Captain Rusty land a boat record 835 lbs. Blue Marlin. More... A special breed of angler flocks to this nook of the world, where fishing loreis born. Hawaii sport fishing is home to legendary tales of hour-long fights,reel-spooling runs, and an angry marlin majestically soaring above the water toshake off a lure. This is Hawaii fishing, reel peeling, line screaming, pin you tothe gunwale action. Marlin Fishing Hawaii Hawaii Marlin fishing is a team sport. Blue Marlin are at the top of the ocean's food chain, they fear nothing. Selecting an experienced crew is crucial. If you are fishingin Oahu, Hawaii and want to land a big Blue Marlin, you need the experienced well-seasonedcrew of the Hawaii fishing charter, Kuuloa Kai . Skipjack Tuna abound in the waters off Haleiwa, Hawaii because the sea mounts attractand keep them. They aren't alone: Blue Marlin, Striped Marlin, and Sailfish all loveto feast on Skipjack Tuna. The waters are teeming with the hunters and their prey. When the Billfish schools arrive in Hawaiian waters to fatten up during their pelagicmigrations, Oahu big game sport fishing is pole-busting. Deep Sea Fishing Oahu, Blue Water Hawaii Fishing Mar 30, 2003 . Mike Corell lands a 669 lbs Blue Marlin More... Pelagic game fish, such as Blue Marlin (Au), Wahoo (ono), Dolphin Fish (Mahimahi) Yellowfin Tuna (Ahi)and Skipjack Tuna (Aku)tend to prefer deep blue water, ranging from the surface to about 1,000fathoms. Hence the term Blue Water Fishing. The rule of thumb is the deeper the water the biggerthe fish. Yet, monster fish have been caught just out side the harbor, so its just a rule ofthumb. You never know when or where a big fish will strike. The Kuuloa Kai team is prepared tohook up and boat a big fish at all times. Deep Sea Fishing Waikiki, Deep Sea Fishing Honolulu Hawaii deep sea fishingcenters around floaters and Fish Aggregation Devices (FAD). "Floaters",the term fishermen call flotsam, act as nurseries for many pelagic species.Where there is food you will find big predators. FADs act as virtual floaters creatingthis food chain. Deep sea fishing Hawaii concentrates around FADs. Due to heavy shippingtraffic, FADs are not positioned as densely on the Honolulu side of the island of Oahu.Deep sea fishing Honolulu means long travel times. The beauty of the windward side is thatwe get floaters blown to us first and have several FADs to choose from. Another rule of thumb:the choppier the water the better the bite. This makes Haleiwa the idealfishing venue. You fish where the fish are. June 2002 . Captain Rusty with 131 lbs. Yellowfin Tuna, Hanapa'a Jackpot Fishing Tournament. Yellowfin Tuna Fishing Hawaii Oahu, Hawaii's world-famous North Shore may be a surfer's paradise. But its best-kept secretis that it is also one of Hawaii's hottest big game fishing locations. Massive schoolsof big Yellowfin Tuna visit Haleiwa, Hawaii's coast every year. Because of this annual migration,it is home to Haleiwa, Hawaii's North Shore Hanapa'a Jackpot Fishing Tournament . Of course, Hawaii is famous for Ahi, the Yellowfin Tuna. Hooking one of these is blue waterbig game fishing at its best. Yellowfin Tuna, pound for pound, are some of the hardestfighters ever built. Just imagine, the Hawaiian State record was 356 pounds of muscle.Indeed, Yellowfin Tuna are true heavy weights bursting with brute strength. They are a toughfighting fish with a fast recovery rate. They will mix deep dives with long, fast runs totest both angler and tackle. This is Hawaii fishing at its best. Oct 2, 2002 . David Scotka boats a 108 lbs. Striped Marlin with Scot Spencer at gaff. (l-r) Scot Spencer, Kyke Scotka, Rob Kapp, and David Scotka. More... Hawaii Fishing for Mahi and Ono Close to the top of the ocean's food chain are Mahimahi, also known as Dolphin Fish andOno, called Wahoo elsewhere. These predators are great fun to catch. When Haleiwa, Hawaii'sMahimahi season is in full swing, multiple hookups are common. Hawaii fishing is about pureadrenaline pumping action. Hawaii Deep Sea Fishing with Light Tackle Let's not forget those plentiful Skipjack Tuna. Although they are the feeders for all thebig game fish, catching 5 to 20 pounders on light tackle is a kick in the pants. These babiesfight like torpedos. I checked in yesterday for a five night stay. I'm checking out in the morning. Three reasons. First lots of creepy people hangin around here. This hotel has a resident population. I don't mind mingling with the locals usually, but I have found it uncomfortable. Second general level of quality, very poorly maintained many minor problems and in some respects rather dirty. Third and most creepy...HUGE cockroaches. This is especially true in the garage area, I was simply astonished by the hoards of HUGE cockroaches. That was enough for me. On the plus side the staff seem like nice people and the location is great for Waikiki. BTW..if you're a wireless laptop user, lots of unsecured WAPS in the vicinity nice. It is a rip off and a dump. The room I had was dirty and worn, it even had snot on the bathroom wall. Security was minimal and the floor I was on had easy access from the street outside; my room had two broken windows that anyone could have gotten through. The only good things about this place are its location to Waikiki and the cheap internet cafe in the lobby. This place was a complete joke! Our first room was on the 3rd floor in tower 1. The twin beds were pushed together to make one big bed. View was terrible, and the television didn't work. I went to the bathroom and saw stains on the shower curtains from their poor attempt to clean off the mold. Bathroom was reallly small too. But the worse part was when I saw hair that wasn't mine on the bed spread. It was so gross, I started to cry because this place was a hell hole. We changed to the 8th floor room. At least the view was better, but everything else was the same, plus there was a cockroach there. Any good part about this place? Well, at least the AC worked, and the location is in the heart of Waikiki. It's walking distance to the Kuhio beach, and the zoo. But during the night, there were so many prostitutes and drug dealer around me and my boyfriend wanted to stay in. Parking was first come and first serve and since there is limited parking space, you're not guaranteed parking. I suggest anyone going to Oahu to save, save, save your money and stay at a better place. Believe me it is worth every penny, and you'll be in ease during your vacation. If I could give it a negative rating I would. When the taxi pulled up to the front I told him that he was mistaken. He confirmed that this was the hotel and at that point I just wanted to fly back home. The "hotel" literally looked like the projects. The front desk lady was polite. I was hoping that the entrance to the "hotel" was not the white caged door that was filthy leading to a waiting area that's carpet had black stains all over it. But it was. We're hoping that maybe the room got better, IT DIDN"T! It was NOT like the picture they posted on the website. It was tiny. We had a full bed that who's springs we could feel pokeing us all night. We were better off sleeping on a rock than the pillows. We couldn't watch tv because it had a parent restriction on it. There were pieces of carpet strewned around the floor makeshifting as rugs. There was no made service and if you want clean towels you must take your dirty ones downstairs in exchane for clean ones. Last but not least the sheet that goes directly on top of the matress was two smaller sheets sewned together to make a full. The view from our balcony was a few residents filthy balconies just 30 feet away. It seems that around 2am the residents/guests come back from partying. You'll know it because their screams will wake you up. We went out at night but didn't stay out too long, we felt unsafe returning to the hotel too late. To many questionable characters hanging around the entrance. It was a very intimidating situation. The next morning we checked out hoping to find another hotel (which we did, MIRAMAR) but prefering to sleep in our car if we didn't. After we left this "hotel" we felt relieved and ready to enjoy the rest of our vacation. This place isn't worth any amount if what they post on the website is misleading. I felt mislead and cheated out of money becuase we had to pay full price over $100 for less than what a motel 6 can offer. This is not a 3-5 star hotel so don't expect it. However, for a place for your stuff while your off seeing the sights and having a good time this is a reasonable place to stay. Okay, yes, the 2 twin beds were pushed together to make a king and they had not moved the reading lamps. (watch your head at night or you wake up with a bump) Air conditioner was loud, but worked well. Bathroom was small, and quite frankly dingy. Insects? I didn't see any, but on a tropical island I'm not surprised other people did. Street noise? Wikiki is a major city, and a huge tourist trap. Yes we heard street noise. Kuhio street is a major thoroughfare. There are large sidewalks on both sides of the street and pedestrian crossings at every corner. (kinda like an ABC store) In all honesty stay in tower 2 as high up as you can get. Avoid the lower rooms, and tower 1 if you want any sort of veiw at all. My parents were with us on this trip and I know for a fact that they would give a very different opinion of this condo-tel. They were on the 2nd deck of tower 1. No window, and faced a parking garage. (you can see where that review would be going) I have stayed in some major hell holes in my life and this was NOT one of them. Pictured are five of them: apple-banana, mango, the ubiquitous passionfruit or liliko’i (those things are everywhere, and thank goodness for that), pineapple, and something that may or may not be papaya. Anyone know what color papaya is, or whether it resembles spam from a distance? Another of the local delicies is a seaweed called ogo or limu loa, depending on whether you’re from Japan on Hawaii respectively, or, failing that, on the nationality of the elderperson who answered your question, “what is that gunk you’re scraping off the beach every morning?” Our hosts had a half-dozen different recipes for ogo, also collected on the beach in the morning (delivered in a half-dozen different Polynesian accents), including various combinations of garlic, ginger, soy sauce, vinegar, chili oil, tomatoes, onion, etc. We tried two of them and I regret not staying longer, or getting up earlier in the day to harvest more. Mar 01 '01 (Updated Mar 02 '01) Author's Product Rating Scenery: Crowds: Time needed for visit: Pros Well worth seeing! Cons Make sure you take enough time! The Bottom Line Hawaaian Volcanoes National Park is a 'must see' on the big island. Full Review Hawaii, one of the rare places where you can you see a volcano in a national park!!! We took the helicopter ride over the ring of fire and then went on down tothe local park to get another look!! Anywhere else in the world where there is a volcano, people run, but in Hawaii Volcanoes National Park they flock to see it. This park has existed since 1916, surrounding Kilauea Caldero and Mauna Loa, and is one of the worlds most active volcanic areas. This park is located on the big island of Hawaii, on the southeastern coast. We drove there from Hilo and it took about 30-45 minutes. The park is open 24 hours a day and there are trails that you can take and even camp on. The main road of the park begins near Kilauea Caldero and goes down to the coast. There is a visitor center and it contains maps and information on the trails. It also issues permits. There are some picnic areas. The park is close enough to Highway 11 to provide access to get gas. However, if you have car problems, you're out of luck since there is nothing else within 21 miles. The visitor center is open 7:45 AM through 5 PM. Elevations within the park range from sea level to about 14,000 feet and it can get pretty cool in certain places. We were glad someone we knew, who had been there, suggested taking jeans and sweatshirts!! Its also not unusual for a shower to come up unexpectedly. We stood at the edge of a trail, looking out over the fields leading to one of the craters and watched a rainline move toward us very fast!! There is also a museum, several miles from the visitor center, which provides films of past eruptions. You can also purchase videos of past eruptions. They have overlooks to view both craters. This center is open from 8:30-5 PM daily. You can explore many of the areas around the volcano by foot, at your own risk of course. There are signs which tell you that people have walked in and never been seen again so we elected not to do that!! Hikers are required to register. Since we only spent a day and a half on the "big island", and only had part of it at the park, we didnt get to see a lot of it and I have a feeling we could have spent lots of time here. However, the volcano was pretty quiet while we were there (much to our disappointment), so it gave us a feeling of not missing too, too much. However, that is not to diminish the awesome experience of being in the presence of one of God's wonders, the volcano. Knowing it could erupt anytime was exciting. And we did get to see some great views of lava flows and hot spots, fire pools, etc. The helicopter ride over the park and flying over the 'ring of fire' was truly awesome. Kubota WAILUKU Lanai Water Co. has decided against fluoridating the island's drinking water supply, despite encouragement otherwise from state health officials. Company President Vince Bagoyo said the residents do not support fluoridation. "It's always been our decision that the residents should make that decision, and for Lanai there's no fluoridation," said Bagoyo, also vice president of Castle & Cooke. Bagoyo said last August that the company supported the project based on a community meeting on Lanai, where citizens and health professionals listed fluoridation as a priority. But since then the proposal to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water has been under attack by some groups and individuals in Maui County. They say fluoridation has been associated with illnesses such as osteoporosis and cancer, and if people want to add fluoride to their diet, they should do it as individuals. The decision by Lanai Water Co. comes when the Maui County Council is considering a bill that would ban fluoridation in private water systems. Councilwoman Jo Anne Johnson said she introduced the measure to give the people a choice in what they want in their water. Johnson said there is evidence that fluoride in the diet may increase the risk of medical complications for children, the elderly and those with cardiovascular, kidney and other chronic disorders. She said she is also worried about the health effect of excessive fluoridation in children. "I always err on the side of caution," she said. "I think people should have the right to choose what they want in their water. ... We should not be forcing it upon individuals." Several Maui residents testified in favor of the bill. But Dr. Mark Greer, chief of the state Dental Health Division, said fluoridation is taking place in virtually all major cities and that there was nothing to prove claims that it causes health problems. "We've heard all the claims against fluoridation," he said. "There is nothing to substantiate a downside in fluoridation." Greer, who had planned to fluoridate Lanai's drinking water by this spring, said the division still believes it is a good idea and wants to continue talks with the community. State health officials say statistics for school year 1999 showed Lanai had the highest rate of tooth decay in children ages 5 to 9 among the Hawaiian Islands and more than three times the rate of children on Hawaii military bases where there has been fluoridation since the 1950s. Greer said fluoridation would be good for Lanai. "This is what it's about: reducing disease and reducing the cost of health care," he said. Johnson's bill, along with a resolution asking the Maui Board of Water Supply to prohibit fluoridation, has been referred to the Council's Public Works and Transportation Committee.
