The rooms were a little bit worn but we had a oceanfront view which was gorgeous. From our balcony, we could look down into the tidal pools and watch turtles & fish of all varieties. It was like a view you would get when snorkeling. The snorkeling beach next door is public and a little crowded but the snorkeling is one of the best on the island. You can swim with the turtles (but don't touch or bother them in any way!!. Remember these are not sand beaches. The pool area was very nice, but not large & fancy.There is no hot tub. Like all pool areas there was a shortage of lounges. Get there early and save one with a towel, then go get breakfast. They have a great breakfast buffet. Ours was included in our package. The bar/lounge was very nice with great staff and also had a great view of the turtles. There is a nice activity desk (Expedia)with helpful people. We had dinner at the resortone night which was good. All the prices are typical resort prices. They also had a very nice gift shop. The beach/pool restaurant and bar is also very nice. They charge $5/day parking which we didn't like. They will valet for you but then you need to tip as well as pay the $5, But that's what we did just for the convenience and because we were on vacation. We really liked the place!! Just returned from 8 days at OKBR. If you're not finicky, there is good value here. Like others who have posted, the place could use a little "umpf" But since you're gone most of the day does it really matter what color the paint, or condition of the carpet ? Our room was more than adequate with coffee maker, refrigerator, clothes iron, security safe, lanai, big shower. We shopped before booking and figured we saved over $60 per day and got more amenities. Our standard garden view still had an ocean view without paying the upgrade, plus received the 5th night for free. The Kama'aina Terrace restaurant puts on a great breakfast buffet, worth the $13.95. We only ate one dinner here, Fridays prime rib-seafood dinner buffet. At $34.95 it was only so-so. Most regular dinner prices run $18 to $35. Bar drinks run $8.00, do your own in-room. I can recommend lunch at the Kalanikai Grill. Good burgers or fish and chips at $8.00 in an ocean side setting. There is a mall within a mile of here that has fast food and grocery stores. Buy your pop, booze, and munchies and eat in room. Look around for other dining options. Tennis courts, swimming pool, and exercise room available. Next door to the resort is a great beach for swimming and snorkeling. Go to Snorkel Bobs on Alii Dr. to rent your gear for $9.00/week. All in all, I'd recommend to anyone. However, our room (#645) was horrible (stained carpeting and torn bed spread), so we asked for another room. Carpeting should be clean so that I can walk comfortably barefooted. The carpeting in our new room #515 was better but still needs replacing. The bathroom above ours leaked one day and we had to ask for maintenance to come in and fix the problem. Maid service was poor two times: Left used glasses on the table and left used towels in the bathroom floor, yet they took the other used towels. On the positive side, our room was large with a king bed, two chairs, table and ottoman, desk/chair; fabulous view of the pool area and ocean/tide pools. Service at the bar was great, although drinks were a little pricy. Excellent dinner at their main restaurant. We enjoyed the mai tais while watching the sunset and seeing the many turtles sleeping on the rocks in front of us in the tide pool. Nightly entertainment was quite enjoyable. I would definitely return here only if they upgrade their rooms. We were at least lucky to have been upgraded to an ocean deluxe room without any additional charges. Pick a room closer to the ocean to avoid the street noise. This place is located about 5 miles from the center of Kona on Alii drive. Also, Kahaluu beach, next to the hotel, is the BEST place for snorkeling. Bring an underwater camera!! I had the opportunity to swim within inches of turtles, Moorish idols, triggerfish, puffers, parrot fish, etc. This is the best place for snorkeling, especially for beginners. Just up the street is a shopping center, where you can grocery shop: Pick up the large bottle of mai tai mix and dark rum and save on your bar bill by making your own mai tais. Good place to shop for bottled water, sandwiches, and sushi! An internet cafe is there too. Overall we did enjoy our stay, but again, would like to see the place upgraded. Maybe there are other rooms that are refurbished. Ask before you book. One last thought: We spent five nights there. I think the next time we will book a condo like we did when we visited Kauai. This way we could have a kitchen to cook our breakfast and have a more comfortable place to stay. We stayed at the Outrigger Keauhou Beach Resort for 5 days in October. It is such a beautiful hotel in such a fabulous location. We had an Ocean View room which overlooked the beach, pool and on towards Kona Bay. The staff and service was wonderful. The hotel is begining to show its age but is still well maintained and very clean. On our last night there, the A/C went out on us. My friend when down to the front desk to report the problem and the maintenence man beat him back to the room. The problem was taken care of in about 30 minutes. Because we stayed 5 nights, we were intitled to the Breakfast Buffet and it's fabulous. They had every fruit you could want and then some. Eggs fixed several different ways, french toast and pancakes or waffles. Bacon and sausage as well as hash browns and potatoes fixed in some other ways. Each day there was several different things added in to make it interesting. For lunch, we were usually off sightseeing and ate wherever we were. Do to the high cost of food at most hotels, we found some wonderful places near the hotel. There is a Wendy's just up the hill. Just beyond that, there is a lovely mall that has Drysdales II, a fun restaurant with a neverending menu. We ate there twice. In the same mall we found a great little Mexican restaurant. It is small but there are tables inside and outside. The service is fast and the food is unbelievable. We ate there twice also. Next to that, all in a row, there is a Thai restaurant, a Subway in cast you just need a deli fix. These places were much less expensive than hotels and gourmet type restaurants if you are traveling on a budget. In the middle of this Mall, there is a small courtyard where they have intertainment several nights a week. All are FREE. We got lucky and saw a wonderful Hula show on Friday night and on Saturday, there was a Dixieland band for an hour then a wonderfully crazy band that played fiddles, washboards, accordions, base etc. Everyone was up dancing and clapping and carrying on. What fun. The Keauhou Beach Resort is a wonderful place to stay. Away from the noise of a town but close enough to visit as often as you want to. Will I stay there again? You bet I will. The Outrigger Hotel was booked by anagency for us. It was a surprise to realize that the hotel was located in the southwestern side of the island and not in the northwest. The NW, where the Hilton and the Marriott are located, we found to be quite warm, arid and moon-like! The SW was quite pleasant, tropical and lush. We were blessed for the location of this hotel. The staff was quite polite and accommodating. The food was excellent. The tranquility of the whole place is priceless. The views of the tropical surrounding, the ocean, and the sunsets are unforgettable. The only issue with the hotel is its old carpeting that is planned to be renovated soon. In spite of its age, built in the 70s, the hotel is quite charming and comfortable. Its location from Kona and other attractive places is just perfect. Having a car is a must! We enjoyed snorkeling and swimming using the public sandy beaches accessible within walking distance from the hotel. In spite of having its own sandy beaches it offers many tide pools to enjoy the marine life. We also found the abundance of the sea turtles quite amusing and relaxing in these tide pools and the beaches. For eating, we found a variety of restaurants in Kona and a shopping center up the hill from the hotel driving south on Alii Drive. We definitely stay at this hotel again, as it offers unexpected values to enjoy our vacations. The craft was used in Old Hawaii when feather lei were used primarily to honor the alii (royalty). Even today the feather lei is considered a rarity, since the beautiful pelts are often difficult to obtain and the workmanship is usually long and painstaking. The feathers are carefully selected, cut and trimmed and the entire process is slow going. The feather lei can be draped along the base of a hat as a hatband and can also be worn around the neck. Hawaiian Quilts For a tropical climate like Hawaii, you may find it odd that Hawaiian quilts are so prevalent, often displayed decoratively as wall art in large rooms or hallways. Yet the art of quilt making in the islands is a valued tradition that continues to gain in popularity. Hawaiian quilting is different from other methods because it uses its own pattern and features appliqué blocks in most quilts. The missionaries first introduced these appliqué blocks to the islands and many of the early designs can still be seen in Hawaiian quilts today. Niihau Shell Necklace The Niihau Shell Lei is a special Hawaiian necklace made from rare shells that can only be found on the island of Niihau. These are the only shells that are classified as “gems” and once you see them, you’ll understand why. These delicate shells come in a variety of colors including white, yellow, orange and even a rare blue. Whole families are involved in collecting the shells and carefully sorting them by size and color. The intricate craftsmanship that goes into a Niihau Shell Lei makes each one a prized possession. Maui snorkeling spot on

Maui Snorkel Map - The Frog's favorite spots! Of course some of the best snorkeling available from Maui is around Molokini Crater. This requires a short boat ride, and we have just the trip for you! Ride aboard the Quicksilver , a brand new catamaran complete with glass bottom viewing area, waterslide and plenty of room to make sure everyone is comfortable. HOME | CHEAP FUN | GEAR RENTAL | MAUI MAPS | SNORKEL CRUISES This is a map of Boss Frog's favorite snorkeling spots. They are all on the West side of the island because that's where the water is generally safer. When North swells come in, it is best to snorkel at the southern locations, i.e. numbers 7 through 15. During South swells, numbers 1 through 6 are best. Generally, ocean swells come from the North in the Winter and South in the Summer. This isn't always the case so the best course is to check with The Frog when you get here for the latest report. Honolu'a Bay Honolu'a may well be the best Maui snorkeling spot on a good day. A good day here is when there have been no recent North swells or rain. During North swells, this is a world class surfing spot and for obvious reasons not good snorkeling. If there has been a recent rain in the area, the run-off enters at the mouth of the bay and ruins the otherwise great visibility. Most of the time this is a great place to snorkel or dive. There are coral formations on each side of the bay and lots of colorful fish. The chance of spotting a few turtles here is excellent. This is a marine reserve so you are not allowed to take anything but pictures. Location: North of Napili on Hwy. 30, about 1/2 mile past mile marker 32, you will see a metal gate down in a wash. Park where you can and walk around the gate, through a canopy of trees and to the water. Be sure to park off the road. If you are not completely outside of the white fog line, you may get ticketed. Do not leave valuables in your car. Facilities: none Beach: Large, smooth rocks Experience Level: Beginner to advanced MAP Makulei'a Bay Makulei'a Bay, also known as "Slaughter House" to surfers, is a good place to snorkel. The snorkeling isn't quite as good as Honolu'a, but if there are some in your group that want to just hang out on the beach, this would be a good compromise. If you are an experienced swimmer, you could snorkel around the northern point to Honolu'a. There are coral formations on each side of the bay and lots of colorful fish. The chance of spotting a few turtles here is good. This is a marine reserve so you are not allowed to take anything but pictures. Location: North of Napili on Hwy. 30, at mile marker 32, you will see a chain link fence at the top of the cliff. Park where you can and walk down the concrete stairway to the beach. Be sure to park off the road. If you are not completely outside of the white fog line, you may get ticketed. Do not leave valuables in your car. Facilities: None Beach: Beautiful, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to advanced MAP Kapalua Bay Kapalua Bay, known as the prettiest beach on Maui is also a good snorkeling spot. The best snorkeling is on the north side of the bay. Unless you are very experienced, you should stay within the bay due to the potential for strong currents outside. Location: On Hwy. 30, at the Napili Plaza, turn toward the ocean on Napilihau Street. When Napilihau Street "T's" at Lower Honoapi'ilani Road, turn right. Drive almost a mile to Napili Kai Beach Club and turn toward the ocean at the Shoreline Access sign. Park in the lot and walk through the tunnel to the beach. The best snorkel access is on the north side of the bay. Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms Beach: Beautiful, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Kahekili Beach Park Kahekili Beach Park, also known as Airport Beach, is a nice place to spend the day with the family. Great facilities and lots of reef to snorkel. The calm water and easy access make it a popular spot for scuba instruction. Location: North end of Ka'anapali, on Hwy. 30, just north of mile marker 25, turn toward the ocean on Pu'ukolii Road. Facilities: Lots of parking, showers, change rooms, restrooms, large covered picnic areas, barbecues and pay phones Beach: Nice, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Black Rock Black Rock is like a wall dive for snorkelers. A lava outcropping with coral attached. Swim from the South end up to the north and back again. If there is no ocean swell, this can be a very clear snorkel. One usually sees turtles along the way and an occasional tako (octopus). A common spot for night dives. Location: On Hwy. 30 in Ka'anapali turn toward the ocean on Ka'anapali Parkway. Look for the free beach access parking. If it's full, you'll have to park at Whaler's Village parking. If you decide to eat or buy something at this mall or have lunch, you can have your ticket validated. Facilities: Lots of parking (some free some not - see above), showers, change rooms, restrooms, pay phones, shops and restaurants. Beach: Beautiful, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Wahikuli Park Location: Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms, Beach: Nice, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Olowalu Acres of coral reef. You could spend the whole day here and not see it all. If it's a little murky at first don't get discouraged - just go further out. This area stays shallow for a long way out. Follow the sand channels until you are deep enough not to scrape your belly on the coral. This location is also a good choice in the afternoon as it more protected from the trades. Location: On Hwy. 30 at mile marker 14, about 10 miles south of Lahaina. See mile marker post on the mountain side of the road. Be careful not to park in soft sand! Facilities: None Beach: Narrow sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to advanced MAP Coral Gardens Great snorkeling with lots of coral and tropical fish. Good spot to see turtles. Unless you are on a boat, this is only recommended for advanced snorkelers due to the long swim and sometimes difficult access. Location: On Hwy. 30, about 1/2 mile north of the tunnel. The first parking area north of the Pali (cliffs). Enter by parking area and swim south in front of the cliffs. Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms, Beach: None Experience Level: Advanced (beginner to intermediate from a boat) MAP Kamaole Beaches Kamaole beaches 1, 2, and 3 are stretches of sandy beaches along South Kihei Road. Each beach is bordered by rocky points. These points are the best snorkeling. Great family beaches with plenty of stores and restaurants close by. Location: On South Kihei Road in Kihei Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms, lifeguards, phones, park facilities Beach: Nice, sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Ulua/Mokapu Mokapu and Ulua are two beaches separated by a nice little snorkel point. This is a nice place for the family, especially if you are staying in the Wailea area. Parking lot may be full if you are not there early or later in the afternoon. Location: In Wailea between the Renaissance and Outrigger hotels. See the sign on Wailea Alanui and turn toward the water Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms, Beach: Nice, sandy beach on either side of snorkel area Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Polo Beach Polo Beach is by the Kea Lani Hotel. This is a pretty sand beach with the best snorkeling area to the right. Nice coral formations and plenty of fish. Location: Between Wailea and Makena in front of the Kea Lani Hotel. Take Kaukahi (the road on the south side of the hotel) toward the ocean and turn right at the bottom of the hill, following the beach access signs. Facilities: Showers, change rooms, restrooms. Beach: Nice sandy beach Experience Level: Beginner to intermediate MAP Five Caves One of Maui's best snorkel or scuba spots. Abundant marine life including many turtles. Not for beginners due to the swimming distance . Many caves and "swim-thrus" for advanced scuba divers. Visibility is sometimes poor after rain or south swells. Location: South of Wailea on Wailea Alanui, turn toward the ocean on Makena Rd, just south of the Makena Surf Condos. In about 1/4 mile, you will see some dirt parking on both sides of the road and a small graveyard between the parking and the ocean. Follow the trail to the sea and look for an inlet for entry. Facilities: None Beach: None Experience Level: Intermediate to advanced MAP Molokini Crater Geologically, Molokini is a volcanic cinder cone that has eroded over the ages. Now the island is a Marine Life Conservation District Seabird Sanctuary, and a world-class dive location. Located 3 miles off the shores of Maui, it is famous for having incredibly clear water with visibility exceeding 100 feet almost every day. You will enjoy thousands of brightly colored tropical fish and it is possible to see monk seals, whale sharks, manta rays, spotted eagle rays and harmless white tip sharks. Molokini is one of the most popular & exotic snorkel & diving sites in the entire world. It is a must see destination for any visitor interested in Maui's underwater world . Location: 3 miles off the coast - boats only Facilities: Whatever is on the boat Beach: None Experience Level: Beginner to advanced MAP Ahihi Keanau Reserve Snorkeling at it's best. Anywhere along this reserve you feel comfortable entering the water is great. Ahihi Bay itself is a great place to get used to your gear if you are new or rusty at snorkeling. After you get comfortable in the water, head out of the bay for some of the best snorkeling on the island. Location: South of Wailea and all of the hotels, after the road narrows and follows the coast closely, you will begin to see Ahihi Keanau Reserve signs. Ahihi Bay is an obvious bay within the reserve. Facilities: None - park where you can. Beach: Rocky to none Experience Level: Beginner to advanced MAP La Perouse To the North is reserve and the best snorkeling. This is an excellent place to snorkel if it isn't too windy. There is a pod of dolphins that frequents the area - usually in the early morning hours. If you are lucky they will swim with you! Location: Past Ahihi Reserve, this is end of the road unless you have 4-wheel drive and a lot of clearance.
